Solar Power (Closed, Samson v Dawn Machine)

The Sun.
Image

From his position within the star that the Earth, among other bodies, orbited, the Dawn Machine turned his gaze to Earth. With his nigh-unmatched power, sharpening his eyesight to see across millions of miles was trivial, especially situated within the star that he was a manifestation of. He rarely returned to Earth- in fact, with his perfect memory, Sol recalled it had been eleven years and two months since he'd been to his place of 'birth.' The intervening time had been spent in the far reaches of space, learning about cultures far more interesting than those of Earth.

Today, though, he spied some things of interest. Not many- a few more people running around in tights than usual, but they had never held his interest. There was a man with an axe who looked interesting, but breaking into a jail wasn't something Sol felt like doing. The super-man in a cabin in Alaska, though... now that looked interesting.

It only took a thought for Sol to get there. Not teleportation- he could just move fast enough for the distinction to be all-but meaningless. The door shattered with but a touch from the Dawn Machine's hand- pure kinetic energy, projected through contact, though even that wasn't necessary.

If the once-great hero was inside, Sol wouldn't attack directly. Instead, he'd simply set fire to the man's shirt, and hover there, a foot or two off the ground, silent.

The door exploded and soon after soon did the doorway. This was because Hayward, although sickly pale, had reflexively dug his fingers into the fridge at the first hint of pain and savagely chucked it at the being who invaded his privacy. It wasn't fast, barely 120 km/h. He was famished and weak. Barely more than a human under the thick Alaskan cloud cover.

Big Blue wasn't himself. He had a piece of the door lodged in his back.

He was hurt, and he had been angry for a long time.

By this time his flannel shirt was already a burning rag on the ground and his hand reached towards the couch. It was old and made in a stale green. Matt Hayward approached until it was within his grasph.

With a sharp whip of his left arm it made an excellent projectile. Samson didn't count on it or the fridge particularly damaging the being - the man. It would shatter against his enemy and his fists of fury would be right behind it. Leaping, he would seek to pummel and push the invader out into the cold wasteland.

"What do you want from me?", he'd snarl either once clashing with his opponent or one being swatted aside.

The Dawn Machine made no attempt to dodge any of the attacks. He gave little indication he even noticed the projectiles, not so much as flinching as they shattered against him. The punch, he did feel. Sol went flying backwards, and landed in the snow, a couple hundred yards away.

When the Judgement got to his feet, he looked angry. Not furious, just irritated. Not because he’d been hit, but because he wasn’t hit hard enough. He’d been expecting someone stronger, from what he’d seen of Samson before.

’What do you want from me?’

In objective time, it was a mere moment before Sol responded. Subjectively, he accelerated his perception, and pondered the question for about fifteen minutes, before coming up with a good answer.

”A worthy opponent.”

As Sol floated slowly back to the cabin, he began projecting kinetic energy at the reclusive hero. Not a huge burst, but several tiny ones. It would feel like being punched very hard, by a fist the size of a pebble.

"Wha--", Hayward opened his mouth before his head whipped backward as if something hit his forehead very hard. He stumbled backwards, one step to the next before catching himself. Seemingly he was being pelted by some invisible froce, the feeling reminiscent of rubber pucks.

His robust forearms crossed infront of his face and he braced himself for the impacts. It didn't actually hurt him due to his Aegis being in place, but the pushing sensation was extremely agitating. "Cut that shit--", he stomped into the ground. Snow and sleet and dirt exploded into the air around him as a small crater of jagged earth sprung around him. "-out."

It bought him a moment to think. Hayward wasn't one to senselessly fight someone, especially since he wasn't good at it. Whoever this other person was did not seem to have that problem however. He'd estimated that this other person was probably a telekinetic of some sort, but looking at him or it with his EM vision was almost unbearable. Akin to staring directly into the Sun. "Who are you?"

Samson was weak, he didn't see himself winning in a straight fight. "If you came for a fight, I'm sorry to disappoint.", Hayward's posture relaxed a bit behind the layered granite barrier. "I am not the thug you think I am. I won't fight you."

This question didn't require much consideration.

"I am Sol."

As if to punctuate the simple statement, the Dawn Machine began to radiate heat all around him. The snow at his feet turned to vapor, and the ground beneath it started to bubble and melt. Nevertheless, he didn't attack again.

"You are... weak. I expected better."

In truth, Samson reminded Sol of someone. A memory distorted, like a blurry photograph run through one too many filters.

"Perhaps you need motivation."

In a flash, Sol was gone. When he returned, he was holding a man by the neck. With casual ease, he tossed the man into the air, and pointed a finger-gun in his direction. Using the same attack he'd irritated Samson with, he made a hundred tiny holes in the man in an instant, and he fell back down to earth leaking blood from a hundred different wounds.

The Dawn Machine turned back to his erstwhile opponent.

"Will you fight me now?"

"Sol."

Samson wasn't the smartest guy in the world, and the word genius would be a terrible stretch, but he wasn't a cretin. Combining the fact that his EM Vision saw this being - this 'Sol' - as blindingly vibrant and the newly gained knowledge of his name made Hayward correct his line of thinking. It was sensible to assume that this man wasn't a pure psychic. Perhaps he had ties to the Sun itself?

"--motivation."

"What--", the former hero dug out of his brainstorm. But it was too late, from behind the jagged protrusions of earth he saw the man squirm in Sol's grasp. Their eyes locked briefly and in that instance he saw all the pain, the confusion and fear turn into a horrible realization. Then his opponent moved. "NO!", Samson exploded to catch the victim. In the air he realized the futility of his task. He pounced through a red haze and landed on his knees a couple dozen feet away painted in crimson.

Big Blue had a thousand yard stare that kept glossing over hands covered in blood.

"Why me."

Image
"Just when I think that I have nothing more to give.", he began, his chin rose toward the sky as crimson beads raced down his face. "The universe reaches out and proves me...", Samson looked over his shoulder towards Sol. His eye a bright white hot star borne of fury. "...wrong.", his voice quaked like rolling thunder before his hands fell limp over his hips.

His eyes closed. "Lord have mercy on my soul."

An instance later the former hero apperated behind Sol, his flight curving space-time itself. There was no twitch nor sound. It was as if he blinked between the folds of space and just was behind his opponent. Ready to coil his forearm around his opponent's neck like a constrictor snake while seeking to grasp his other forearm that would come to rest against the name of Sol's neck - a triangle chokehold. If successful, he'd hold and attempt to choke this being out.

However, Samson's true goal was to use his Empyrean Effect. His Eletroweak Interaction would begin trapping energy inside his own malnourished body in order to functionally steal the strength of his opponent before his eyes would flare up even brighter... and begin disintegrating the top-most layers of Sol's scalp.

Again, the Star that Speaks didn't resist the attack. He hardly could have- Samson moved at speeds comparable with Sol himself, and without any indication it was coming, he was blindsided by it. With the Empyreal Exemplar's arms around his neck, Sol was held in place, though not having to actually breathe meant he wasn't gasping for air.

Suddenly, Sol felt his energy being drained. People had tried this tactic before, and it had usually failed. Technology, even off-world, was never quite advanced enough to steal enough energy from Sol's nigh-boundless reserves. This, though... it wasn't technology. Whatever Samson was, it was enough to actually weaken the Dawn Machine.

At this realization, Sol began to laugh. It continued, unbroken, as the upper half of his skull was seared, flesh turning to ash in moments. He'd had difficult fights, before- the sheer number of ships the Wo'den had fielded against him had been impressive- but this victory, Sol might actually have to work for.

Reaching deeper into his internal well of energy, Sol let it flood into his body, accelerating its natural processes by a hundred-thousandfold. His skin would begin to flow back, eyes growing out of severed endings, coating the charred skull, until the Dawn Machine looked unharmed. He didn't feel that way, to be sure- he still felt pain, and having your face melted off is pretty high on that scale.

Knowing he'd not have long before Samson began siphoning that energy as well, Sol switched strategies. He couldn't move, held in the hero's grasp as he was, the Dawn Machine instead reached out, and called down lightning, from the sky above them. It wasn't storming, but the electrical charge was still there, in the clouds, and it was trivial for Sol to bring down a hundred-thousand volts or more. It wasn't aimed at Samson, but rather called down in a single bolt onto Sol's head. Through the contact of their body, he would transfer the electrical charge directly into the nervous system of the Man of Tomorrow. The aim was to overload his senses, and disorient him long enough for Sol to break free.

Samson couldn't decide what was worse: the stench of burning hair or that of burning flesh. His sense of smell, while not as sharp as one may think, was in sharp disgust. But it was nothing compared to the agony brewing inside his heart. This was an act of desperation. He didn't know what else to do. Hayward could run, but chances were he couldn't hide. Nor had he anyone to call, The Society was long gone.

Akin to an adrenaline junkie, he was running with hyenas.

Apropos, from the half disintegrated cranium came a laugh. "What the hell?", the half-formed, horrid cackle was haunting. In shock, Samson alleviated the pressure his arms exerted around Sol's neck and his eyes snuffed. Then lightning came down from the sky and into Sol's reforming head. Resulting explosion threw Samson further away - the attack didn't physically hurt him as the ions simply slid off his force-field, but it did faze him and overloaded his senses in a moment of weak resolve.

Few seconds later, Samson rose back from the ground. "What do you think you'll gain from this, huh?", he asked out loud. "Are yo suicidal? Does this give you a rush? Are you aroused?", added he. "Affirming your strength - faster than a speeding bullet, stronger locomotive. These fragile things can't hurt you.", Hayward looked over to the brutalized remains of the victim. This was something he and the Solar Tyrant had in common.

For the first time in a couple years, Samson stretched muscles he barely remembered existed and slowly rose from the ground into the air. "Are you afraid that you might not be the strongest thing around?", Big Blue said coldly as his eyes flared up again. The energy he stole felt both invigorating and intimidating. His hands both curled up into two heavy, diamond-hard hammers. "It's okay. I would be."

Ready or not, Samson jettisoned towards Sol at incredible speedswith a cocked left hook only to unleash his heatvision again. This time to rob Sol of his newly restored eyesight. Successful or not, his fist would follow like a hypersonic bullet towards the superpowered psychopath's chin followed by it's twin. However, his right hand wouldn't seek to impact, instead seeking purchase on either Sol's arm or garb. Once that was achieved Samson would supply torque.

He would spin so fast quickly, the wind would form a cyclone around them, and hold so firmly the centripetal force would force Sol to either fight it or surrender to it before violently chucking his foe towards the stratosphere with Samson in pursuit and ocular bombardment.

"I'm afraid you're mistaken," the Dawn Machine said simply. You may be strong- perhaps the strongest being I've encountered in years. But in the end, you'll still just be another genetic aberration. While I... I am the Sun." At those last few words, Sol's voice echoed, the final word being repeated softly a hundred times, in a hundred different voices. An unhinged smile spread over the Judgement's face, as flames danced in his eyes- right before they were burned out again.

Having your eyes seared out of your skull is an exquisite sort of pain. One Sol hadn't had the chance yet to experience. He sighed softly with pleasure at the sensation, not even noticing that Samson had grabbed him, until he had been sent flying.

Ah. Getting me away from innocents. How very altruistic of him.

The force of Samson's assault propelled him further into space- beyond the atmosphere of Earth, past even the Moon. The Dawn Machine waited until the assault abated to re-orient himself. With no gravitational pull, any direction could be 'down.' Sol chose to position himself so he was 'standing' above Earth. There was something symbolic about it.

When Samson showed his face again, the Deadly Dynamo would use his unparalleled mastery of energy manipulation to pull Samson towards him, by creating a gravity well around himself. Once Big Blue was moving at great speeds, he would cancel the effect, though the lack of friction in the vacuum would mean the hero would keep moving, and deliver a single, super-powered punch to his face.

Where Sol slipped was in assuming that the waning and waxing of the Moon had any effect on Samson. For while he flew high and mighty, a blue blur in the sky, his frown and fists forming the peaks of a W trained at his enemy -- Samson didn't actually fly, at all. He pushed and pulled space around him into an eggshell and 'squeezed' himself forward. The broken hero bent space via negative mass impartation.

This gravity well was a similar distortion in space-time, though comparatively crude. It's effects were magnified even more than Sol intended, And so, as his enemy cocked his neutron matter hammer of a fist back Samson was already there to meet him half-way. No sound in space, but he swore that he heard the bones within his wrist shifting.

Samson grimaced harder before Sol's hand overpowered his brief flex of force, flinging him backwards.

He stopped his plummet back to Earth and noticed something: they were in space. Way past the ionosphere. Hayward felt chills creep up his spine but compartmentalized them for later.. Never in his career was he so far up nor did he know if he could breathe. He did know he could last for a long time underwater, but there was no need to risk something as dangerous as this before. This was new. Exhilirating. Scary. Motivating.

Samson owed his past efficience partially to the fact that he knew how to fight and lift. His 'superpower off-switch' allowed him that. That's how he tackled threats larger than life. He had technique and self-discipline. Big Blue always lifted with his legs and threw a cross from his hip.

In tattered remains of his clothing, Hayward pivoted in high orbit to meet Sol's expectant gaze again before rebounding. One hand grabbed a straying satellite along the way, the other held strong the direction of his flight. He sought to slam the machine over Sol's head before unleashing another volley of fire from his eyes. This time particularly to induce a spell of alpha decay into Sol's constitution and litter the surroundings with stray electrons.
