Nosferatu: An Overview of the Accursed

I. History

The Nosferatu are an ancient race of vampires with a history many do not know. Not even them. But some things are generally known of them and those who pay enough particular attention to them.. They have lingered in legend in various forms for thousands of years, perpetuated through legends dating back to ancient greece and gaining prominence in Romania. Their attributes are very inconsistent and those with true knowledge of them know that they are capable of growing and evolving in a wide number of terrifying and sometimes unpredictable ways. From herculean strength, to killing men and cattle with their presence alone, to consuming the moon itself, the powers of these vampires are rooted firmly in the realm of the supernatural.

In truth, they have existed as long as civilized society itself and had lived in a golden age. However, the Nosferatu have long fallen since the Dark Ages, a time of mostly unrecorded violence. During this time, they waged shadowy wars with humans, and lost. Being that they have no compulsion to reproduce, they fell in number until only the smartest (or luckiest) survived.

It is unknown, even among them how many remain today. Some estimate there to be only some thousands, but they do not account for those who may slumber in the darkest corners of the earth.

II. In today's society

Nosferatu are obscure and as a whole, shadowy creatures. Their low numbers and secrecy lend them an amorphousness akin to many organizations today. Their existence is known generally, like many supernatural creatures now-a-days. But it is difficult to actually prove it. Most people who kill a Nosferatu or discover a corpse, make the mistake of bringing it out into sunlight, where it burns to ash and any trace of their vamparific nature is destroyed.

It also doesn't help that many such creatures manipulate perception and are capable of mind control, and thusly appear often as a haze on cameras and mirrors or outright do not appear.

Their relevance in today's society is currently unknown. Many have access to large troves of ancient wealth through human proxies. But as a whole, they mainly have some sway in crimimal enterprises, notably using human trafficking as a way of procuring food. Some form bonds and alliances with humans. One thing however can be for certain: The Nosferatu were far more powerful in ancient times, before the dark ages. They are nowhere near the heights they had achieved in this time.

Before the advent of technology and metahumans.

Despite this, the Nosferatu who roam about today are a varied bunch, many belonging to factions and many more going at it on their own.

It is ancient greece. You are a slave carpenter to the Spartans. You have tried many times to escape, only to be caught and whipped. The next time you are caught, can mean your death. One night, a pale man in a ragged cloak appears before you and makes you an offer. He speaks of the fall of Sparta. The next day, you hear word of the war. Losses are heavy and the country’s Navy is soon to be routed. The next night, he appears.

You are a great, gallant knight. One of the best. But no amount of strength saves you from infection. One error. One glancing blow, and your are near death. To let such skill go to waste would be a tradgedy. So the king sends forth a special agent who makes you an offer. Simply put, to be a powerful and immortal warrior in a special legion which serves only at night. The next, you dawn an all black armor and never show the face beneath your helm again.

Image

You are a murderer and you are locked away in prison. A woman appears, pale and with a face you don't recognize. And not a pretty one. You get out the next day after some sixty years. And she won't let you go quietly into the good night. She violates you, and makes you into a monster again. The day comes, and hapless to escape from your prison, you burn in your jail cell and only barely manage to make it out alive. You wake up in an air vent with blood on your hands and no idea how you got there.

You're a drug lord and the feds are cracking down on you. You’re family has left you and your empire is shambles. You have nothing left. And just as when you think the feds bust on, it is just a pale man in a hoodie. The men outside stand frozen, as if by the will of god. The man offers you a way out, in exchange for your service, so to speak. You have great talent and a great knowledge of skeletons in the closet that cannot be let go to waste. You die that day, but you still run things.

You lay on the ground crying in agony. Something escaped your lab and it infected you. Your colleagues are dead and you are well on your way to joining them. A man stands before you, or something like. Whatever he is, he is unaffected by the plague. First, he shows you his hideous face. Then he tells you that he can make you like him.

It is 1920. The great depression. You are homeless. You never really forged the closest connections with your family and never really invested too much in that 401K retirement plan. Maybe you can find a relative and you won't be a burden. Oh, and you have something. Something bad. A few days ago, you started coughing up blood. A man before offers you his blood. In exchange for yours. It makes you feel better. Someone tries to shake you down after you come across a gold watch and the pale man beats the man unto oblivion, breaking bones with his mere grip. He isn't a looker, but you wanna be like him. He seems to be getting through these hard times just fine. You find out later that he can make your dreams come true.
These examples are some of many origins for individual Nosferatu. They area varied bunch, with their embraces being rare and often out either pity or spite. What reason would you have to turn someone into a hideous, bloodsucking monster?

III. Unholy Origins

Image

Dark, demon-like creatures who suck the blood from the living are something that exists throughout every culture.

The Nosferatu are said to descend from not demons, but from things who were like them in many ways. Things that were of sin and otherwise antithetical to all that is holy. But these were not creatures of hell nor were they necessarily malevolent. They were usually of poor moral character, but more so seemed to hate all forms of religions.

They were not always like this. These things were entities of darkness. And the dark in itself, is not evil or good. However, in early times, the dark was believed to be so. And these beings, who relied so much on feeding from human thought to exist, survived by becoming creatures resonant with what humand thought of them. The dark was a thing that hid predators and evil things. The shadows held dark secrets and unholy sins, waiting to be cast out into the light. The dark was cold, and no life would exist without the sun. Reviled by humanity, they grew to live on as it's eternal enemy, living through nightmares and tales of terrors. And in doing so, they drove people to things that were holy. Of faith. Of god. And they feared that which was not of god.

In a world of men, gods and monsters, they sought to be monsters.

However, time passed and the beings became weary of their thought-forms through which, they acted on the world. They were too easily dispelled, too easily banished and soon, they simply grew tired of being bound into the thoughts that shaped them. Soon, they came to realize how their evils empowered the gods and had enough. They had witnessed the evils of men.

And they learned from it.

Men were often weak, ignorant and most of all, malleable. Far easier prey than any god. So to, the monsters had made a plan to merge with men and transcend their spiritual selves. To become carnal creatures, who would spit in the face of gods through their very existence.

The Nosferatu were born at the conception of civilization itself.

IV. Known Abilities

The Nosferatu were never intended to grow as they did, but their descendants were creatures who lived to be things antithetical to all that is unholy. Thusly, their souls and spirit were given away in favor of flesh and physical power. Things which resonated with sin and darkness.
Throughout history, there have been many who have been considered, evil, unholy and yet still powerful. Conquers who raped and killed. Men who wiped out entire countries. Many spat in the face of god. And the Nosferatu soon grew and evolved to do the same.

The Nosferatu are carnal creatures, who's powers lack power in the form of radiant energies, such as light, fire, electricity and so on. Their powers are of flesh, darkness and mental manipulation.

Protean- Shapeshifting and the ability to change the attributes of the body. One of the most powerful abilities, when mastered.
Vigor- Superhuman Strength
Stasis- Durability and Resistance to all forms of physical change from external influences. (With the exception of their banes)
Celerity- Superhuman Speed and Swiftness
Nightmare- An aura of fear and repulsion.
Occulus- Control of Darkness and Perception
Dominate- Mind control using the eyes
Instinct- Supernatural Senses

V. Universal Attributes

Image
Undead- Lack of any signs of being medically alive. Body does not undergo chemical reactions, functions room temperature and the heart does not beat.
Inhumanity- The Nosferatu's take the form of a creature warped to the point of being obviously inhuman and outright repulsive to them. Their bodies, while still capable of shapeshifting, outright refuse to accept human form.
Affinity for the Cold- Nosferatu are immune to most forms of cold. Their blood functions as antifreeze and no region on earth produces enough cold to affect them.
Affinity for the Dark- An general affinity with darkness. A lack of any fear or negative effects from residing in darkness, as well as a physiology well suited to it.
Bloodletting- The ability to, in an affront to science, gain power by drinking blood alone.
Exponence- The ability to grow in power through use of supernatural abilities and drinking blood.
The Beast- A supernatural instinct which drives a vampire to feed against it’s will and guides it to survive. The man is kept intact so as to guide the beast, but the beast remains ever present to consume the man, should he deny it. Acceptance of it leads to power and often, immorality. It is “the monster inside.” And it may take many forms.
Frenzy- A state which renders the Nosferatu into an extreme fight or flight state, in which they become mindless beserkers or creatures concerned only with self preservation.
Immortal- The Nosferatu live eternally. Even if they do not drink blood, they merely fall into an eternal slumber, awaiting re-awakening
Banes

The descendants of Nosferatu were "thought forms". They were repelled by all manor of holy objects. Soon, the spirits found that the true key to the soul was through the body. Drugs. Beatings. A lifetime of abuse. Disease. These things twisted the soul far more than they ever could. But, they were unholy creatures still. Their resonance was with things anti-thetical to the spirit. So, their spiritual banes were lifted and replaced with spiritual ones.

Bane of the Cold, Fire

Fire is a force of destruction and mankind’s greatest invention against the cold. With their warmth, their bodies could carry all manner of disease.
Nosferatu of all ages catch fire easily. Wounds by fire heal at rates similar to humans in reaction to it.

Bane of the Impure, Silver

Silver is a substance known to destroy disease and have healing properties. Some say that through silver, one may channel the wrath of god himself and free those entrapped souls. Ironic that such a soft metal, which is impractical for conventional use in blades, makes for the perfect weapon to pierce vampirific flesh.

Bane of the Dark, Sunlight

The Nosferatu are creatures who give darkness power. They embrace moonlight and stand readily in the light their prey often makes for themselves. But they all fall before the might of the sun. It's mere presence is enough to make all but their strongest willed and those with thinner blood, enter a death like sleep.

Nosferatu vampires take sever damage from the sun. The more power their body holds, the greater the damage and the compulsion of the death sleep.

Ghouls, Minions of Man-Eaters

Post by Lord of Nothing » Fri Oct 25, 2019 7:23 pm

"Beasts are not aware that they are beasts. The closer a man is to a beast, the less he knows of it."

"Ghoul" term is a term coined for the undead minions of the Nosferatu. In myth and legend, Ghouls were creatures that steal coins, prey on children, drink blood and feed upon corpses. This, is not far from the truth.

Indeed, these undead minions may prey on children if so ordered or so hungered. They may steal valuables if so ordered. They need not feed on flesh truly, but they most certainly do drink blood. These zombie-like vampires are distinguished by their even more horribly warped humanoid forms, their lack of free will and their lack of any semblance of a soul beyond their bestial presence.

They are created through the immediate death of a human after the 'kiss", often through being fully drained or loosing so much blood that their body may no longer live. Sometimes, people have an aversive reaction to the venom based on any number of disorders. But for the most part, creating one is something that can easily happen if one is not careful in how much blood they take from someone.

A peculiar condition exists with them and their servitude. Their services merit but one mandate, and that is blood. Much like a vampire, in order to properly function, they must have blood.
Anatomy
The first is of course the skin, as it begins to turn a deathly white. Then comes the inside of the body as the insides are torn asunder and flesh contributes to making the long limb-like tendril that serves as their new feeding mechanism. The genitals are robbed from the body, as the stinger becomes the only necessary means of sexual reproduction that the creatures possess, reproducing within other as a parasite does. The hair falls out and ears gradually become pointed. The hands forsake finger-nails for long, keratin-like claw. The eyes shoot open, now blood red. And thus, a ghoul is born.
Image
Ghouls are creatures of a foreign anatomy, one that is not properly understood by conventional science. They sustain themselves on blood, despite the fact that blood does not give enough energy for such large organisms to sustain themselves. Their blood does not flow. The heart does not beat. And most of their internal organs are non-functional remnants of what once was.

Ghouls come in many shapes and sizes depending on who the vampire in question is willing feed upon.

Devour: Feeding. The stinger through which Ghouls feed. Located beneath the tongue, these stingers may project themselves some ten feet in front of the Ghouls. The tendril attaches to the target, injects a singular fang which may pierce through steel plate and thusly, begin sucking from the life.
Image
Unlike their masters, Ghouls are capable of sustaining themselves and remaining active on the blood of animals and lesser creatures, such as rat, dogs, cats, pigeons and other common urban animals. However, human blood will make a ghoul become much stronger and more threatening. Potent ghouls can even become physically stronger than some of their masters if fed correctly.

Like prized guard dogs.

Vigor: Strength. The creatures are stronger than they once were, and as they begin, they start with a strength some three times their base. Eventually, after multiple feedings, a ghoul may grow much stronger than it's body originally has, to the point that children may be able to easily grown men or larger ghouls are capable of lifting a man with only a singular arm and feeding on him thus.

A nosferatu lord or mistress may still yet have room for stronger minions who will go forth and carry out their bidding.

Lethargy: With their increasing strength, comes an increased slowness. Only if allowed to feed do stronger Ghouls gain some measure of speed. Otherwise, they shamble rather than run unless well fed.

Newfound ghouls are as limber as they were as men, and can sprint at people at speeds not unlike an olympic athlete, making them terrifyingly difficult for a normal person to escape.

Resilience: Durability and toughness. These corpses are contrary to what many may believe, not rotting. Their flesh is as resistant to being bashed and bloodied by blades and bullet, they are almost impervious to human levels of striking force and surface, requiring weapons to generally confront.

Ghouls have a high degree of resistance to damage in general and feel no pain. The heart holds their power, and the brain their consciousness. To kill a Ghoul requires the destruction of either the entire head, the heart or burning. A simple nine millimeter to the head isn't reliably enough to do more than incapacitate a ghoul at best.

Bloodhound: Their sense of smell is strong enough for them to simply find their prey through sniffing the ground or the air.

Inhuman Hearing:
Hearing is finely tuned to frequencies detect heartbeats from twenty feet away and to hear the flow of blood for human beings in particular. However, they are also well capable of hunting rats and their ilk as well.

Rending Claws:
An elongated set of talons which spawn from the hand, that grow sharper and sharper with age. At first, they have no supernatural degree of sharpness, and can hack away at human flesh like a tiger's. However, over extensive months, they become capable of tearing through Full Steel Plate. Then Ballistic vests. And so on and so forth.

Often times, they are retractable with some ghouls serving as minion who wait on their master's every whim. But the varying physiology of that which they come from extends to them.

Torpor: The daysleep, Ghouls often go under ground, either through digging or through (in modern times) tunnels and sewers. When buried in native soil, each Ghoul may go into a dormant state of sleep for an indefinite period of time. Sometimes, they may even awaken stronger if they were healthy . However, once they awaken, they will require blood and they do not regard commands that do not immediately get them blood.

A sacrifice of sorts, is required to rouse these being from any sort of slumber that is more than a week.

Frenzy: A ghoul that is well fed will jump in front of a train for it's master. A Ghoul that frenzies is difficult to control and will not respond to commands that do not involve indulging in blood. They become truly mindless, and although strong, generally not much smarter than a rabid animal.

Impure: They are easily burned and set ablaze.

Helios Curse: A Ghoul will begin combust upon direct contact with sunlight like a vampire would. UV light burns them, but not as much as direct sunlight shall.

Bane of Silver: Silver causes the flesh to corrode away and it will not heal easily. A blade of silver makes for often a poor sword. But even a butter knife will sink into such a creature as though it was a finely honed dagger. And with far more debilitating effect and pain than any blade.

OOC Notes
  • This is a general character but just shoot me a PM to ask to use it. I'm not particularly attached to them.
  • These creatures tend to be uncommon.
  • This is applicable to more than one character. But the general concept remains the same.

Nosferatu: Animals After Dark

Post by Lord of Nothing » Wed Mar 18, 2020 10:32 am

Animals After Dark

Image
.
Hunters of old spin tails of the nightmarish Nosferatu. The deformed, and constantly evolving mutants of the vampire race. While their banes remained constant, their abilities fluctuated so wildly that each new encounter was a learning experience. And the lessons were written in the blood of their fallen allies and seared onto the psyche of those hunters who survived to pick up the pen.

Like many ancient vampires, the Nosferatu have the ability to turn into noctornal beasts. However, just as their natures empowers them, it limits them. For they can only turn into predators and scavengers. Forms and aspects of things like horses and rhinos allude their grasp. This form is attained by tasting the blood of the creature in question.

This causes a great many Nosferatu to become a pale reflection of the local lifeforms of their area. The Nosferatu of Europe tend towards owls, crows, wolves, bats, rats and other such creatures. However those Nosferatu who have long since expanded have shown capable to turning into more exotic creatures, such as tigers, sharks, venomous snakes, anacondas and other such creatures.

Enhanced human thralls who use this power find that it is not ever permanent, and they find their bodies far less amorphous than their Nosferatu Masters. They can only take only beastly aspects or grow and change in size. Never however, can a thrall stray far from humanity.

However, much like how the Nosferatu is inherently inhuman in appearance and unnatural, so to are many of the forms of animals usually twisted and unnatural. From exposed skeletons to red glowing eyes, the Nosferatu animals usually have something which gives them away. With time and blood, this can be suppressed. But for some reason, it costs more of the vampire's power to do this.

These forms take time to maintain at first. However, as a vampire's mastery increases. they may eventually be formed indefinitely.

Examples include but are not limited to....

Bat- Wings, Fangs, Echolocation, Bloodsucking, hollow bones
Crows- Wings, Beak
Owls- Wings, Full motion head turning, Hollow bones, echolocation
Crocodile/Alligator- Bullet Resistant and hardened skin
Octopus- Tentacles, Beak, Mundane Camouflage
Rats and Mice- Small size/Swarm Form
Cockroaches- Small Size/Swarm Form
Wolves- Canines. Claws. Four legged running.
Coyotes- Same as wolf.
Mosquitos- Swarm Form, Bloodsucking
Fox- Similar to wolf, but smaller, more nimble and lighter. Generally increased agility.
Spider- Swarm Form. Venom. Spider-Silk generation.
Leech- Swarm Form, ease of blood sucking
Snakes- Venom, flexible/contorionist form.
Tiger- Retracteable Claws, Four legged running
Sharks- Fins, Shark Teeth, Electrolocation

These are but a few examples.

With time, Nosferatu can master this bestial concept and further refine it. At first, they can only spawn a simple set of claws. Soon, they turn into mutated animals for limited amounts of time. With time however, they may soon be capable of taking on different arrays of entire limbs and maintain these forms indefinitely. Combined with their powers to change size, and soon their forms may be comprised of such mixtures that they cease to resemble any one of the animal that makes up the amalgam.
Image
Culture and Side Effects

This power is considered by many a power used and developed by very experienced Nosferatu.

It's use makes it harder to remain near with the very humans who who Nosferatu prey on. And it is said that each animal one remembers causes the Nosferatu to become a little bit less human. Some who find themselves trying too many animals find that their mastery over the concept of protean has not caught up with them. And fledgling risk losing their sapience to the blood of such animals and becoming nothing more than a common beasts rather than an Apex Predator who harbor the advantages of man and monster alike. Thusly, this power is difficult to master and requires some dedication to utilize to it's full potential but extremely rewarding.
Image

The Aspect of Protean is considered a tempting power to have. Of all the vampire's conceptual powers, the aspect of Protean is considered to be one of if not the most powerful and easily considered the most overall versatile. This power works with warriors, scholars, spies and scavengers alike. But it is known for causing a departure in humanity. Vampires who find themselves tasting the blood of creatures finding themselves becoming increasingly beastly themselves. Some forgo clothes, remove genitalia or generate fur if they still even have such a sense of human decency.

Many Nosferatu who master or are adept in Protean do not use armor, being that their forms are hard for accommodating for it.

Ghouls

Ghouls too can intuitively use this aspect. Indeed, many ghouls are able to immediately form claws and sometimes even tendrils upon their conception.

Some Ghouls may be however be bred and custom tailored, particularly for lords who have the money and resources to acquire the blood of distant and exotic animals. These ghouls can be tailor made to suit the vampire's needs and molded within their hands like putty.

Some however are for whatever reason, left to their own devices. Many are wild monsters who's lords have been slain and have since reverted to instinct without guidance. Perhaps one insane elder or otherwise ignorant fledgling would set them free rather than simply put them to sleep. Maybe their master has become lost to the beast and roams among as their Alpha. For whatever reasons, these ghouls are unbound and will abide by no masquerade. The follow what is common.

Residing near human settlements, ghouls none the less may seek to taste animals and otherwise subconsciously shape their forms so as to suit their needs.

Image

Most of these ghouls have long been slain. Some however lurk in the shadows of less advanced wilds of today where humans still reside. However, some exist in various corners of the earth. Underground. In temples and in shadows. Legions of ghouls who lay in the ground, many forgotten and forsaken.

And yet, there are some who are said to simply be waiting.

Common Fledgling Questions

Are clothes maintained after transformation? No. The Nosferatu must find new clothes, shed their clothes before hand, forgo them entirely or in the case of an elder, generate clothes comprised of animal skins and hides from their own body. The transformations cares little for such items. And Nosferatu do not need clothes in most environments due an indifference to the cold and a lack of impediment by heat which does ignite a flame.

What about animals who are abnormalities? Typically herbivorous animals? These animals are pretenders. The creatures must hunt at night and be able to subsist primarily on meat in order to be considered an animal. Theoretically, if such a case were to be discovered, it would need to be that specific animal, and not necessarily the entire species.
