Linaria Celestine, Blade of the Imprisoned... and Kat Stone, I guess.

Post by Reyn » Sun Jul 29, 2018 2:45 am

Old legends speak of beings known as the Noble Gods- ancient deities with the capacity to harness ultimate power, able to bend even the most foundational laws of the universe to their will. They existed in the darkest corners of the universe long before living memory, thriving off chaos and suffering, destroying all that stood in their wake for the pure fun of it. To come across a Noble God was a fate worse than death; they were as cruel as they were powerful and, for the longest time, nigh undefeatable. Many were sent to slay these beings, but none of them returned successful. It seemed as though their reign was absolute, that the universe would continue to lie in their grasp and suffer as much as these monsters desired.

Linaria Celestine, the Noble God of Conquest, was no exception. She, much like her peers, was a being of evil and destruction, as she was born with the innate desire to cause as much war and conflict as she possibly could. Her impact was a little more subtle than that of many others; rather than simply appear before a world and use her immense power to tear it apart, she would act a little more silently, turning the people of that world against each other until, eventually, they destroyed it themselves. Of course, she was no stranger to causing destruction with her own hand, it just wasn't her preferred method.

Despite there being no shortage of worlds to turn against each other, Linaria grew to feel dissatisfied with her position. Sure, there was conflict, but it was on such a small scale to a Noble God like herself, that it felt almost meaningless. It was like watching ant colonies fight with each other; entertaining for a short while, but nothing compared to the scale of real war.

It was her desire for greatness that eventually led to the end of the Noble Gods' reign...

"Ah, it's just not the same as it was. This world has really fallen apart in the last few hundred years... I miss Marceau, despite everything. He was at least interested in using a sword. Most people in the modern world don't even know how to hold one... it's pitiful."

Student Report

Student: Katherine Stone
Grade: 12th
Reporting Period: 2nd Semester

Katherine stone has been drifting off in class a lot recently. Her focus on her work is almost non-existent at times, and she sometimes doesn't even respond to her own name. She is still as shy as she was when she first came to this school at the beginning of the year, so perhaps her problems with paying attention are caused by nerves from going to a new school. Still, we would think that she would be over it by now.

Despite this, her grades are excellent. Katherine is one of those very lucky people who can get straight A+s whilst only being awake for about 50% of the lessons. We hope her college applications are going well, but please be aware that, if she doesn't start paying more attention, then our letter of recommendation might paint her in a less than ideal light.

A young, mortal woman, tired of the treatment of her people at the hands of the Noble Gods, approached Linaria one night with a strange proposal. You see, the woman was a practicing sorceress who specialised in containment and destruction spells. On her own, though she was powerful, she would never be able to even touch a Noble God, but if Linaria could somehow help her... things might be different.

She pretended to understand Linaria's plight, listening to her talk about how pathetic mortal wars had become and how tired she was becoming with them. This boredom was Linaria's greatest weakness, and it allowed her to be exploited by this sorceress to devastating effect. The sorceress suggested that Linaria should upscale things, that she should focus, not on making mortals fight each other, but on starting a war between the Noble Gods themselves. Such a conflict would be devastating to the universe, possibly apocalyptic, but there was no other solution to the problem. The options were to either let the Noble Gods wipe themselves out at the risk of bringing everything else down with them, or to continue suffering for long into the future.

To her surprise, Linaria accepted her offer. With their powers combined, the two plunged the Noble Gods into a state of ceaseless conflict, causing the deaths of countless- both mortal and immortal. It was only when the last Noble God had fallen that Linaria realied what the sorceress had really done... in exchange for her life and all the power she gained from the fallen gods, the sorceress was able to trap Linaria for eternity inside a block of metal, which she sent floating through space, never to be seen again...

...or so she thought.

The metal, after countless years, eventually found its way to a still-forming ball of rock we now know as Earth, where it lay in the ground for millennia until it was excavated by a group of miners in France, in the year 1613. From there, it was forged into a fine sword- a rapier with a silver-plated guard and a jewel-encrusted hilt, the kind of sword that only someone with far too much money could own.

"I know my own abilities, at least. Despite my situation, I can still have some influence. I never really used my godly strength much, did I? No...
I always liked to focus on the individual... this will be a fresh challenge for me. Nothing more, nothing less. Just something to do."

That person, at the time, happened to be Lord Marceau Valentin, a nobleman in northern France. Marceau was a man of envy, forever lusting after the land and power his neighbours owned. Although this was known to everyone around him, Marceau had never once acted on his envy. Nobody would ever suspect him of anything more severe than a biting comment or perhaps a less than honest deal. He was a polite man with a gentle disposition and an outwards appearance of kindness to his peers.

But, with the sword in his hand, he changed.

From the moment it came into his possession, Marceau became extremely protective of the blade. He refused to let anyone else touch it, even to polish it, and kept it by his side at all times. Stranger still was the way he would sometimes be heard talking to it, occasionally muttering words to the sword as if it were not just an ordinary blade, but a person... no, a lover. He gave it the nickname 'Anima', perhaps due to his delusion that it was alive, and took it to every single battle he ever went to... which was an increasingly high number.

Over time, Marceau became increasingly aggressive and warlike, and his desire to own more land was no longer something he internalised. In the span of just a few decades, he had led an army to invade almost all of northern France, and he insisted on accompanying his men to every single battle. It was perhaps this insistence that led to his victory; at the height of his reign, it was rumoured that Marceau was undefeatable in combat. They called him many things during this time. 'The Mad Swordsman', 'Lord of the Devil's Blade', 'Marceau the Undefeated'... all stood as testament to his supernatural skill with a sword. His army, towards the end of his time, seemed to be similarly powerful, and together they were an unstoppable force.

And then, he stopped.

On a cold December night, Marceau took his sword and slaughtered his entire army, then stabbed himself in the throat and died in his home. Nobody knows why he did it. He was at the height of his power, going forwards with unstoppable force, with nothing but positive fate on the horizon... and yet, he killed himself. Some people say it was the guilt that got to him, others say he was cursed by God to stop the violence, and others say it had something to do with the sword he loved so much...

Katherine Stone

Alias- Kat
Age- 17
Gender- Female.
Alignment- Good. Lazy, but good.
Species- High schooler.
Social Standing- Clumsy, awkward wallflower.
Status- About to drop out of the fencing team.

Kat moved schools earlier in the year, and she's struggling to fit in. She's a daydreamer who doesn't pay much attention to her studies, despite getting very high results in her tests. Despite being pretty terrible at fencing, it is a huge passion of hers and she would do almost anything to improve. Being a hero isn't something that she would actively seek out. She would much rather sit at home and practice, or play video games. Although, if she saw someone in need, she wouldn't be opposed to helping out...

-Linaria Celestine-
Alias- The White Horseman, War, Conquest, Blade of the Imprisoned
Age- Unfathomable.
Gender- Female.
Alignment- Evil.
Species- Noble God.
Accent: Slightly French.
Status- Imprisoned within the blade of a sword.

Despite being sealed in a sword for eternity, Linaria Celestine still potentially poses a threat. She is able to take a human form and speak to whoever holds the rapier prison, and is able to grant them a number of abilities. Those who wield the sword tend to change in personality over time. Once peaceful people become aggressive and will seek conflict, striving to create as much chaos as possible.

The sword was given to Kat as a present from an unknown friend, placed on her desk when she came home from school with a note that simply read "good luck with the fencing". Linaria and Kat do regularly communicate with each other and seem to have established a mutually beneficial relationship; Kat takes Linaria's guidance on how to become a better fencer, and Linaria... well, she gets what she wants as well.

Currently, Linaria is stored in a bag inside Kat's locker, with a metal block placed over the tip to stop her accidentally impaling someone during fencing practice. Kat knows of a few abilities that Linaria grants, but not all of them. There are a few that Linaria would like to keep secret...

"Greetings, young Katherine. My name is Linaria Celestine. You are about to become a master of the blade. Are you prepared?"

-Abilities-
Linaria, being a Noble God, once possessed the ability to do impossible feats. Now, trapped within a sword, she is far less powerful, but some of the abilities she can grant to Kat do tend to push the boundaries of what's physically possible...

By taking up the correct stance, Kat's reflexes increase to a significant degree. This isn't to say that she becomes supernaturally quick and light on her feet, however, it just lets her react a little faster to incoming threats. Unfortunately, Kat isn't the best fencer in the world, and (at the moment) it is rare for her to get into this stance properly in order to activate the ability.

Any attack that directly hits the side of the blade, Kat will be able to reflect. It doesn't matter if it was a fireball, a punch, or even some sort of weird psychic blast- if it lands directly on the blade, Kat will have the opportunity to push it out of the way. This ability relies purely on her reflexes and physical strength, neither of which Kat is particularly known for (since she can rarely pull off En garde), so at the moment this ability is only relevant on pure luck.

If Kat can successfully use Parry and manage to deflect the attack back towards her opponent, then the opponent will be inflicted with whatever Kat would've been had she received the attack as normal. This is where Linaria's strange alteration of reality comes into play. If someone made entirely of fire who was 100% immune to all sorts of heat were to attempt to burn Kat and she successfully pulled off a Riposte, then the firecaster would get burnt, with all the pain and injury that comes with it, as much as Kat would've been- even fatally so, if the attack was that strong. Nothing is immune to Riposte. An immortal who tried to kill Kat would be killed themselves, if she managed this.

Kat's Fighter's Sense ability allows her to see the energy of people and where it is most concentrated, and Critical is what allows her to exploit that... well, it would if she was competent enough to use it. The energy Kat senses constantly moves and shifts in place, moving the point of most concentration around without stopping. If Kat is able to land a direct hit in the centre of this point of concentration, then the person, no matter how powerful or even stab-proof they are, will be immobilised for a short while. The way this works is by essentially interrupting the flow of energy within a person, causing them to be briefly paralysed as it rebuilds. Although this energy has no significance in literally any other situation, it is something that's inside of everyone... though whether it's an innate thing or just something Linaria projects onto her opponents is unknown.

Even for a skilled fighter, the amount of precision, timing, and concentration required to successfully pull off Critical is immense, meaning that even if Kat improved her skills, she would still rarely be able to use it.

If Kat concentrates really hard, she is able to see the aura of energy that people have. The aura is able to tell her many things about a person; how powerful they are, whether they have any supernatural qualities, and (oddly) whether they've ever held a sword before. Kat only ever uses this ability before a fight or when Linaria tells her to, as it gives her a terrible headache after. She also struggles to interpret the energy, so she relies on Linaria to translate for her... and Linaria isn't always honest.

This is one of the abilities that Linaria hasn't yet allowed Kat to use, or even told her about. This ability simply makes people more likely to follow Kat's instruction in a battle scenario. Whether or not this is effective relies entirely on the strength of those listening, but the more closely they listen to Kat, the more likely they are to think she has a good idea.

Linaria's blade can cut through almost anything... if used correctly. To work, Kat must first pierce the object with the tip of the blade angled slightly downwards and held at a perfectly straight angle, then she can push it to the side and slice through. It also doesn't work on anything enchanted to be resistant to cutting, but everything else is fair game... or, at least it would be if Kat knew what she was doing. Kat doesn't really know how to hold a sword properly and has not yet used this ability, much to Linaria's dismay ("Come on, girl. I know you're a lesbian, but can't you even hold a sword straight?").

The longer Kat uses the sword, the more aggressive and conflict-seeking she will become. Unfortunately, she will also become more skilled in combat as well. Past users of Linaria would end up nigh undefeatable in a fight before succumbing to the Noble God's control, with speed, strength, and reflexes far above the average human, as well as a healing rate and durability that is nothing short of miraculous. It's not yet known whether this will happen to someone like Kat, however, as all the past users had some sort of prior military training, and all she has is a failing grade in gym and a note from her fencing instructor telling her to "get of her ass and start training for once".

.
.
.
"Oh, yes. She's perfect. With just a little training, she could make the perfect vessel... perhaps I won't even kill this one when I'm finished."
.
.
.
"Perhaps."

FINALLY DONE
I really like the theme of this character's abilities. Granted, I might be a bit biased since I used to fence, but I get what you're going for and I and I appreciate it, lol.
