Name:
Professor Camellia Hawthorne
Alias:
Amnesia, Lethe, and The Professor. The former are simply ways to remain anonymous, the latter is what her servants call her to avoid revealing her name to the public.
Age:
34
Alignment:
Despite her unassuming appearance and lack of destructive abilities, Camellia is pure evil.
Brief Bio:
Camellia is a vulture. She preys on people who have suffered traumatic events, offering to remove the memory from their minds and help them recover, using her qualifications as a psychiatrist as a way to persuade them her motivations are pure. Once they have one memory altered, however, they can't stop, and eventually their reality becomes warped in Camellia's image. They end up serving her blindly, since they remembered all the times she 'saved their life' or 'helped their family'. These people are willing to do pretty much anything for her... and, if they're not, she'll make them do it anyway and force them to forget afterwards.
Abilities:

Camellia's body tends to 'forget' injuries. Any injury that she sustains that isn't instantly fatal will heal in a matter of seconds, as soon as the source of injury is taken away. For example, if she got stabbed in the stomach, the injury would heal almost instantly as soon as the knife is taken away. This means she's awfully difficult to kill, and a lot of people believe her to be completely immortal as a result. Coupled with the fact that she doesn't feel much pain, and this makes Camellia a very, very frustrating person to attack.

By showing someone the symbol on her palms, Camellia can erase their recent memories. This has a couple of caveats, of course. Firstly, the person must be looking directly at the symbol for this to work. They can't just be glancing at it, and it can't just be a part of their passing vision- the symbol must be at least partly in focus. Secondly, the amount Camellia can erase depends entirely on how long the person looked at the symbol for. It initially goes up in a 1:1 scale of seconds to minutes; looking at them for 3 seconds will erase 3 minutes of memory, for example. This eventually goes up exponentially, though, and after one minute the rate doubles (and so on). A useful (and somewhat frightening) thing about this ability is that it's not actually tied to Camellia's physical presence. If she were to broadcast herself live to someone via a video call or a TV station, she would still be able to use the ability on anyone who looked at the broadcast.
Image

Camellia's memory-changing abilities don't just stop there, unfortunately; she has a far stronger and more dangerous version that she can only activate when close to someone. If she is able to place both of her palms flat against someone, then she can do two things: read their memories, and change them. This ability usually takes longer than the last, since Camellia has to search for the memory she wants to change, erase it, then replace it with whatever she wants, but the effects are almost irreversible. She usually changes just one memory at a time, since it would take far too long to change a lot of them, and due to her impaired mobility, the people she does this to usually have to be willing. Unfortunately, like a drug, one hit is all you need to keep coming back- the false memories Camellia plants in her victims' minds paint her in a very positive light, and make it seem to them like she can help with any other problems they might have. As their lives spiral further and further out of control, they return to Camellia to forget their experiences, until their entire reality is warped to her liking.

Camellia worked as a professor in a university, teaching psychology to students. She then moved on to work in psychiatry, specifically working with people who have suffered memory loss and those with PTSD. Because of this, she knows her stuff. Camellia is very knowledgeable in the workings of the human mind and in the way people behave. This might not seem like a particularly useful skill to have in a world like this, but the way she predicts people's actions sometimes is enough to convince some people that she's a mind-reader as well.
Equipment:

An ordinary wheelchair. Camellia is paralysed from the waist down and requires this to move around. She can push it using her hands or get someone else to do it, but it has no fancy special features.

A fairly expensive camera with a video recording feature. It can connect to the internet via wi-fi or by leeching off her mobile data.

A large set of switches and controls, set up permanently in her place of residence. Due to its size, Camellia can't carry this equipment around, but there are usually people by it should she ever need to use it. It connects to her camera and can be used to hi-jack TV signals, but she hasn't used it on a large scale yet...

Not for her use, of course. Camellia keeps a few knives and simple handguns around to give to her servants so they can actually do their job.

There are about 6 people who serve Camellia without question. Most of them live where she does (and where the broadcast equipment is), but some of them still carry out normal lives. These people are used as hackers, bodyguards, hitmen, and whatever else Camellia needs. They also help her with daily tasks that she's unable to complete due to her disability. Despite what she's done to them, they seem happy to serve her.

ADRENA is a young girl who goes to great lengths to hide her identity. She never talks to anyone, she uses a codename, and she wears a gas mask that covers her entire face. It is believed that she suffered an injury in her childhood that left her face permanently scarred and disfigured and perhaps this was the original reason she covered it... but, of course, she no longer remembers that event. ADRENA is very skilled with computers and is a pretty decent hacker, though her skills are nothing supernatural. She can't hack into the FBI, but simple things like TV stations... that's entirely possible. She mostly stays inside with Camellia and only goes out if it's absolutely necessary.

Image

Lucius worked as a bartender until recently. He still talks to the people who used to work at his bar, and is seen by most to be a fairly normal, friendly guy. Like ADRENA, he lives with Camellia, and tells his friends that he's doing so because she's his friend and she needs caring for sometimes. They believe him. Lucius doesn't have any notable skills... but he does have money. His father was a very rich man and, when he died (for reasons Lucius can't remember), he left his son almost all of his fortune. This money funds Camellia's actions, but it also supports the other servants financially as well, since many of them are unfit to work. Out of all of Camellia's servants, Lucius seems the most 'normal'. Most people wouldn't suspect that something traumatic happened to him, even if he did remember what it was.

Image

Jake was, and still is, a delinquent. He's only just become an adult, but he takes that as an excuse to do whatever he wants, and he calls people who are even days younger than him 'dumb little kids'. He puts up a tough act, pretending like he doesn't have a care in the world and that he is completely unshakeable but, deep down, Jake is very, very sad. There are only 2 people in the world that he trusts: Camellia, and Artemis. Everyone else is either stupid or cruel. Jake is a very skilled fighter who is both strong and quick, and he tends to use a baseball bat as a weapon. He has no issue with violence and will happily dispose of anyone Camellia wants him to... but he's not going to do it quietly.

Image

Artemis is a veteran. She was one of Camellia's first patients when she worked as a regular psychiatrist, and ended up becoming one of the first people who fell under her control. She is probably the only servant who has ever seen Camellia before things went south, but (predictably) she has no memory of this. Being ex-military, Artemis is fantastic in combat and knows how to use both her body and a variety of weapons to their full advantage. She is a lot cleaner and quieter with how she kills than Jake is, so Camellia often sends her out if she needs someone dead in secret. Jake is training under her as a student of sorts, and the two are often sent out together. They don't always see eye to eye and tend to bicker and fight a lot, but they're a deadly efficient team.

Image

Maya is a blank slate. She would practically beg Camellia to wipe her mind, and became so dependent on it that Camellia had to change her memory so that she wouldn't want any more changes. She's a sad and thoughtful girl and she tends to keep to herself. Camellia doesn't send her out for anything other than simple errands, because Maya is absolutely terrified of violence and confrontation. Since being with Camellia, her anxiety and paranoia got worse, and nothing Camellia could do was enough to stop it. It's not known why Camellia keeps such a 'useless' person around, and it's possible that she won't be around much longer...

Image

Cal is a nice old man. He's very friendly and helpful, much like Lucius, and he maintains a fairly normal public image. He was an engineer in his youth and is often called upon to fix the broadcast system or any other thing that Camellia broke. Cal did offer to make her wheelchair 'way cooler and with so many nice new features', but she refused his help, so he has to make do with just fixing it when it breaks. To both the servants and to people outside, Cal is like that weird uncle or grandpa you have that lives a few states away: he's fun, a little quirky, and he disappears a lot without warning. He's constantly waiting for a call from his real-life grandkids who moved to Europe... but, unbeknownst to him, that call will never come...

Wait, they made more than just Tubthumping? What is this insanity.
Alone she drifts from ancient mists
Nary a candle, nary a wish
But in the wont of wandering paths
Through wooded knolls, and windworn crags
She seeks a face she thought as friend
But now -- she thinks as judgement's end
