Knock Knock [CLOSED]

Post by Juno » Mon Sep 30, 2019 4:59 am

Chicago.

Surprisingly few of Juno's hits came from the mob, these days. Especially in Chicago, where Assurance was cracking down on organized crime like there was no tomorrow. Juno really didn't give much of a shit, since they could hardly capture her. Their guns were top-notch too, which helped.

Still, the bounty on this one made any risk she assumed worth it. Plus it was a low-threat scenario, so she didn't need to wear body armor or anything. Her natural defenses would be sufficient. As would the Gladius revolver she had holstered at her hip, a not-uncommon sight in the Windy City these days. Assurance was putting more guns on the streets than the gangs ever had, ironically.

Aside from that, and the Ulysses combat knife strapped to her ankle, Juno was unarmed. Well, in the traditional sense, at least. She was a living weapon, more effective a killer with just her bare hands than a fully-armed soldier ever could be. The white tank-top she wore was very lightly stained with blood, in the sort of way that most people would assume was just an unfortunate ketchup spill. A pair of nondescript black jeans rounded the look out.

All in all, Juno was... not exactly inconspicuous. Visibly armed, sporting a large facial scar, and muscles like a UFC fighter. People gave her a wide berth as she strolled down the sidewalk. That was good. They knew their place, at the bottom of the food chain. They could count themselves lucky that Juno wasn't hunting them today.

Among the enhanced senses Juno possessed was smell. The contract had included a bit of clothing that the target's mob pals had hung onto. It still held enough of a scent that the mercenary could follow it to the source.

Siobhan. Pretty name. Irish, I think.

One of Juno's sort-of exes had had an Irish name. She spent a few moments dwelling on the more pleasant memories from that period in her life, before shaking the nostalgia off with a grin.

Shame she'll have to die.

Apparently, the target was holed up in an apartment building, in the slums. That... made sense. Probably not exactly cash-rich, given the whole 'running from the mob' thing. Apartment 202, to be exact. Picking the lock on the front entrance was easy enough. Juno was quiet, as she strode up the stairs. Superhumanly-sharp vision meant she could pick up potential threats far sooner than a mundane.

Slowly, the mercenary drew her revolver, hiding it behind her back, and knocked thrice on the door, her preternatural strength making it sound far more forceful than one might expect of someone who looked like her. Juno was all about defying expectations.

"Hey, is this, uh... Sy-obe-han? I've got a delivery for you!"

Talking out loud has been the woman’s first mistake.

Siobhan had been enjoying the day, squatting in a shitty apartment watching K Dramas on TV. She was still in her pajamas: a tank top and shorts.

Her late nights kept her in bed until midday, and Bonnie was more than happy to stay tangled up with her blankets.

Unfortunately the door knocked, forcing Siobhan to muster up the willpower to answer. Her bare feet were cold on the tile floor of the apartment. The whole place smelt like mildew and frebreeze.

Bonnie groaned at annoyance at the mispronunciation of her name, a common occurrence. She had barely heard it. It almost kept her from getting that spine tingling sensation that she was being lied too. One of her abilities.

That, and no body knew this address. Siobhan never stayed in a place longer than a week.

“Wrong house.” Bonnie called out in a slightly slurred speech, her deaf accent prominent. “Sorry.”

Juno had been half expecting a hail of gunfire to tear through the door. She was a little disappointed, in all honesty. The worst hunts weren't dangerous, they were boring.

Then again, she's... young. Poorly-developed killer instinct. If she lives, she'll have to figure it out fast.

That was an unlikely outcome of the scenario, though. Juno wasn't in the business of losing. She'd taken out a member of the Pack. Admittedly, he'd been the world's shittiest international terrorist, but still.

The lock on the door wasn't exactly military-grade, but Juno wasn't going to pick it. The sound was too obvious, in the silence of the hallway. Letting O'Reilly know she was coming would give the girl time to slip away. Or go for a gun, though that was far less concerning. It'd take more than a street-legal piece to slow the highly-evolved hitman down.

Hitwoman? Is that sexist?

After silently shrugging her shoulders, Juno activated one of her internal adrenaline glands, providing her already robust muscles with an additional burst of strength. She reared back, and struck the apartment's door head-on with her free hand. It wasn't exactly reinforced, meaning the door flew clean off its hinges, slamming to the ground.

With her other hand, Juno raised the revolver, and scanned the room, looking for Siobhan. Assuming she caught sight of the Irish girl, she'd open fire, intending to simply put a few rounds in her without any fuss.

Hah. Like it's ever that easy.

Bonnie reached for her brass knuckles in her pajama shorts as soon as she knew the woman outside her door was lying to her. It was a useful ability, and Siobhan was grateful for it.

She had no way to discern what the intruders plan was, since she couldn't hear beyond what was spoken loudly. She had only heard the knocking because there was immense force behind it. The woman was probably enhanced. But she tried to get Bonnie to open the door, to avoid a scene.

A professional.

Siobhan swore. The mob probably wanted to silence her before she could spill on their secrets and methods, go to the cops and point out who killed who and who ran the books and who dealt with the drugs. Bonnie knew it all. And then she had betrayed them.

With a swift movement, Siobhan hid behind the door, feeling rather exposed in her pajamas and bare feet. She waited for the few seconds. The door came flying into the room, coming off its hinges. Dust and plaster went flying.

The woman entered. Siobhan focused, getting into the womans mind and making her see what wasn't there.

Siobhan was invisible to the assassin, and the living space went pitch black. She couldn't hear, so she wouldn't let them see. A wicked smirk comes across her face. Of course she still saw things how they were. The assassin couldn't possibly know what she was dealing with.

Clever kid.

Juno let out a low chuckle. This wasn't normal darkness. This was... advanced darkness. Her eyes were augmented sufficiently to see through shadows, but there was nothing but blackness here. Her eyes had been straight-up turned off.

Fortunately, vision wasn't the only sense available to the mercenary. She simply closed her eyes, and let her focus shift into her hearing. About a dozen heartbeats in the general area, but she only had ears for two. Her own, which was naturally the loudest, and O'Reilly's. Paired with her sense of smell, already attuned to tracking the girl, she could sense her with about the same level of accuracy.

The problem was, you couldn't aim with your ears. That was a task attuned mostly to the eyes. So Juno didn't shoot. Just stepped slowly forward, feigning blindness. The room's obstacles were still mostly invisible to her, so the mercenary had to feel her way around, but incrementally, she was moving towards her prey.

Okay, that feels like a couch...

"So," she said conversationally, "are you sure I can't convince you I'm a really dedicated FedEx delivery person?"

The small-talk was mostly a ruse. Juno's way of obfuscating the fact that she knew right where O'Reilly was. Not to mention, her hearing was sharp enough that she could use the words as a form of echolocation, providing her with a better sense of the room's layout.

And... gotcha.

Without warning, Juno turned on a dime, raised her revolver, and hired a round off. She couldn't be completely certain, but she was at least aiming in Siobhan's general direction. If she didn't hit the girl, she'd at least make her move- making sounds that Juno could use to track her.

Bonnie was amused watching Juno feel her way around. The womans lips moved. Whatever the mob told her about Bonnie, they didn't mention she was practically deaf.

But the woman was enhanced somehow. In a instant she whipped around and fired at Siobhan. She couldn't for the life of her, figure out how Juno did it. The bullet narrowly misses her abdomen. Bonnie drops to the floor and rolls to the side before coming up, swinging at the woman, trying to make contact with Junos jaw before moving away to the other side of the room.

Siobhan focused again, changing the scene in Junos mind, tapping into various, obvious, human fears. It was one thing to be scared of the dark, and another to be falling, hundreds of feet above the earth. It wasn't an easy illusion, and it weakened Siobhan. She prayed it would work.

I'm gonna fucking barf.

In the real world, Juno fell to her knees, but she was utterly unaware of the motion. This wasn't just her eyes, that had been compromised. It was every sense there was. She saw clouds rushing past, as the Earth rapidly approached. She heard wind rushing in her ears. She felt that wind on her skin, in her hair. Her internal accelerometer had been hijacked as well, which really sold the whole 'imminent gravity-based doom' thing.

Of course, it wasn't real. After the initial few moments of abject terror- during which Juno heroically managed not to scream at the top of her lungs -she steadied herself, holding fast to the knowledge that the target was in her head. But that didn't dispel the illusion. No matter how much she intoned the words This isn't real internally, it still seemed pretty damn real.

You know what? Fuck this. It's my fucking mind. I'm in charge here.

Juno had no intention of dying. And if she did, it would take a downright herculean effort. Fucking Isaac Newton wasn't going to be the one to do her in. She'd evolved past so many mortal dangers. An immunity to poison. Resistance to ballistics. Night vision, superhuman strength, fucking claws. She could beat gravity too.

As the Earth approached, still feeling like she was falling at terminal velocity, Juno convinced herself that she was evolving. And, within the world of the illusion, it began to work. She felt massive, leathery wings unfurl from her back. Each much wider than she was tall, so as to support her weight. They faltered for a few moments, and then began to flap, and Juno swooped downwards another hundred yards, before beginning to pull up.

Then she blinked a few times, and the clouds were gone. As was the blanket of darkness that had vexed her before. Slowly, Juno stood, grabbing her gun from where it'd fallen after she went to her knees. She was unsteady, her body recalibrating after every sense had been completely fucked with. Swaying slightly, she turned to look for O'Reilly.

"Gonna make you regret that."

If Siobhan was still in sight, Juno would take another shot, determined not to miss again. But if the girl had an ounce of sense in her, she'd have started running.

Bonnie grasped the table, all illusions fading away. The woman had begun to fight the hallucination, and Bonnie had desperately tried to hold on and manage control, but eventually the womans willpower had won out.

Even worse, large scale illusions left Siobhan pretty weak. Juno might have fell to her knees, but Bonnie was close behind. She couldn't even make herself invisible. All She heard was the word "Regret".

Oh yeah, there was a lot of regret she was feeling. She tries to stand and waves the baton in an arc in front of her. "Stay back!"

I should really just shoot her.

Juno had no qualms about killing children. Or teenagers, in this case. It was practically a public service, cleansing the gene pool of more useless garbage, before it had the chance to reproduce, and pass on the trash in its DNA. But she didn't take the shot.

The mercenary had a bad habit of playing with her food. She'd done the same with the last target, leading him on before utterly crushing him. It was more satisfying this way. She backed away a few feet, finger still caressing the trigger of her gun, and hopped up onto the back of the couch, kicking her legs idly.

O'Reilly's words were oddly slurred, the volume off. Something clicked.

She's deaf?

Now this entire affair just felt unfair. Even with her abilities, this girl never stood a chance. She was disabled, at a natural disadvantage against the pinnacle of human evolution. Fortunately, Juno's brain was equally as powerful as her body. She learned far faster than any human, meaning she was fluent in ASL.

<How did you manage to live this long?> she signed, one-handed. The other hand was keeping her revolver in place, where it rested on her thigh. <Do you have asthma or something?>

The way Siobhan had practically collapsed amused Juno. Not everyone could be so fortunate as to be able to go days without sleeping, and stay perfectly alert, but still.

<Tell you what. I'll give you a free shot with that little toy of yours. Fair's fair.>

Siobhan frowned. She would almost prefer it if her attacker wasn't able to communicate with her. It would mean she would have to put up with less bullshit. If her situation hadn't been so dire, she would have been amused at the idea of having asthma. As for how she survived, even Bonnie couldn't answer that. She had procrastinated her appointment with death longer than most.

<Dunno.> Bonnie shrugged, finding her footing. Her breathing regulated to a more natural pace. <Spite probably.>

She laughed dryly when the woman offered a free shot at her. This woman severely underestimated her. <Don't go easy now that you know I'm deaf. I mean, I'm hardly gonna go easy just cause you have little bitch syndrome.>
