After the Masque

Alma returned to her chambers, as she was supposed to. With her maiden's help, the young woman was freed from her elaborated gown and changed into her nightwear; a light long sleeved dress, white in coloration and that did little to protect her from the cold. It wasn't a problem though, her covers would protect her from the chilly breeze that came with the start of winter.

The maids didn't leave until they were certain that Lady Alma was asleep. A few minutes after the door was closed again the girl's eyes fluttered open, and she sat up straight in her bed. Of course she hadn't fallen asleep. How could she?

In her mind, the same song kept playing non stop. Their song. The song she and her Aleks had danced to, and as the recent memory returned, so did the smile to the girl's lips.

She couldn't just stay still.

That night, Alma left her room. Barefoot, with nothing to cover her body but the light dress she had on, her wavy hair flowing with the wind that brought chills up her spine. She didn't mind the cold, not now.

The palace was empty as it never was, considering that all residents and servants were with the guests in the ballroom. Alma ran through the corridors until she got to a balcony, one that allowed her to see the garden, as well as the night sky.

It was a beautiful night indeed. Alma stood there for a few minutes, maybe hours before returning to her chambers. She hummed that specific song under her breath on a sweet melody, dancing her way back to her room. When she finally fell asleep, Alma was dead tired, but still with a smile in her lips. It had been a beautiful night, indeed. One she'd never forget.
