"Now, now, boys, behave."

Gielban returned to the gathering at Draven's side, a new rose in her hand. The last lay on the grass behind her, petals strewn haphazardly, stem a tattered waste. Her palms, concealed by curled fingers, were smeared with blood. She needed to control her temper. If she couldn't, she knew she was going to regret it. Still, she had trouble controlling her own actions while she was listening to the group speak, hands working relentlessly to dismantle the poor rose while she was no longer the object of attention. Now that she was back amidst the fray, she forced her head to even, breaths slow and controlled to maintain her pounding heart.

The way Cyan spoke to Ebony...

"We are all civil here."

It wasn't wrong, exactly. Well, it was wrong to her, wrong for one of the men she trusted least to court the sister of one of the men she trusted most. That certainly irked her, but the main quibble was far more selfish.

Why can't Draven speak to me that way?

No mind. It didn't matter. It would be potentially disastrous for her reputation if he did, potentially disastrous for both their reputations. Despite the Blackwell influence, he was beneath her lot, and she was not ready to kill her impression as a breaker of customs just to fall back into the Conrad ways. She realized she had been staring at Cyan for far too long to be considered comfortable, and quickly shifted her gaze once more to the sky above.

A sly smirk took place in Cyan's lips at Ebony's positive response. So easy. If only Gielban was that easy to persuade, it'd save him the headache. His pleased expression faltered with Draven's comment, but luckily for him - both of them, in that situation - the Lady of Azuria had decided to step in and avoid a comfrontation.

The Lady of Azuria. As Cyan laid his eyes on her, he couldn't help but notice the small pool of blood that threatened to drip from her palm. The agressivenes to which Gielban treated the flower conflicted with her apparently cold exterior. Had he hit a nerve? He was certain he had, though he couldn't quite tell what it was. Was it his proximity with Ebony that had done it for her? As the idea that Gielban could possibly be attracted to him came to mind, it almost made Cyan laugh. No, that wasn't it. She was being protective over Ebony, perhaps?

As Gielban's gaze drifted away from him to the sky above them Cyan released a sigh, returning his attention to his to-be-fiancée. "The sun is about to set, and preparations shall be made. If you'll excuse me, I must get going." Lord Fray said, performing a small reverence towards Gielban, and later towards the Blackwell siblings. "I can't wait to see you tonight." With a final smile, Cyan turned his back on the group and walked back towards the castle. Hopefully Alma would already be getting prepared to the Masquerade; it'd be an important night for them both.
Hey! Isn't it funny we all want what isn't right?

With Gielban's interruption of her own, Cyan was able to retreat while saving face. He glanced down momentarily and caught sight of the red that had pooled in her grip. There she goes again causing him more problems right before the ball as well. If anyone else were to notice, some would dare spread word that her mind had begun to descend into insanity. Anything to weaken her image and lose the support she held. Clearly, he would need to do something about this later.

“My apologies, Lady Conrad. T’was all in good fun.” He briefly grinned before he returned to his usual serious self.

"The sun is about to set, and preparations shall be made. If you'll excuse me, I must get going." The Blackwells returned his gesture appropriately. What Cyan later said gave Ebony a flutter like feeling that warmed her some.

“I look forward to tonight.” Came her reply with another smile. She felt a tug on her arm and curiously glanced over to her older brother. She knew the two didn’t get along but did not understand why, and whenever she asked, Draven would simply shrug not knowing the cause of Cyan’s dislike.

“Come, we must also prepare for tonight as well.” It wasn’t directed to anyone in particular, however, it held a different meaning for the two ladies. For Ebony, it was time for her to return home and dress for the ball proper. For Gielban, it meant she would be alone with him. Draven procured his personal handkerchief from his breast pocket for Lady Conrad to both wipe away and to hide the wounds on her palm.

He walked them both back towards the palace however upon nearing, Draven would let his sister go and motion for a stationed guard to escort Ebony to the entrance and to call for a carriage back to the Blackwell Manor. He had a bit more pressing matters to attend to than entertaining his sister more.

With a promise to see each other another time, Ebony left the two alone in hopes of seeing them later tonight. She eagerly awaited the night.

It was growing late. The golden sun dripped into an iridescent horizon, and the night air chill already began to settle throughout the palace grounds. As Lord Fray departed, Gielban gave yet another curt nod, perhaps slightly less respectful than the one she'd shown in greeting. She had no idea why Ebony fell head-over-heels for the man, and even less so why Draven didn't stop her. Cyan was an enemy, a dangerous one, and the reckless flirtation her closest advisor's sister pursued could spell tumult for them both. Yet again, it was a delicate situation, possibly one the Blackwells thought could be spun into their favor.

She almost asked Draven for his stance on the matter when she noticed the silk handkerchief held out in offering.

"Ah. Yes," Gielban whispered. No point in trying to lie if he had obviously seen. "Thank you."

The cuts, numb in the moment, were beginning to sting, and she cringed slightly as she pressed the cloth against them. Taking advantage of the silence to avoid the issue on hand, she continued with what she was thinking of before.

"The situation between Cyan and Ebony distresses me." Draven frowned slightly, but said nothing, so Gielban continued. "I know it is wise to keep an eye on him. He is one of our biggest threats, after all. But despite your sister's virtues, I'm not entirely certain she has the proper... caution and tenacity... to handle the courtship without failure."

"Unfortunately I don't have much say in the matter as she is promised to Lord Fray." He almost seemed to sigh at the thought of his sweet and kind-hearted sister traversing the deeper waters that is the Frays. "Ebony has.. simply followed what she had been taught to do as the obedient member in the family, per the pre-arranged agreement." Draven would have probably said more about his true thoughts, however, it was unwise to share such muddled opinions and uncertainties. The Fray are not to be trusted, this he knew. But the same can easily be said for his family. It is, after all, one big game of house of cards.

Anything he said could have and will have been used against him. Trust is very hard to find let alone to rely on these days.

"I am sure you are aware, of course."

She was promised, yes, and had been promised for a long time. Quite long enough for Cyan to move in with his "wiles." Quite long enough for something to actually happen between the two. But nothing did happen until the recent months, after Gielban took the throne and pushed away Fray influence from Wrenhaven. This was the source of the lady's unease. Merely an inkling of a hunch, though, and nothing she was able to consciously articulate.

"I am aware," was all she replied, choosing not to dwell any longer on fears she didn't know the root of. Hopefully, she could escape the upcoming event without much stress, and Lord Fray wouldn't cause any scenes. This entire encounter had left her on edge. If he did do anything... she glanced at Draven again. He could certainly keep her safe. A sworn guard, the ruler's right hand.

She wanted something more.

"Draven...?" Gielban said, palpable hesitance in her voice's tremor. "Will you dance with me tonight?"

"Draven...?" His brows raised from the hesitance as he looked over to her with perplexity. He almost seemed to straighten his posture some as it was a rarity for her to voice a concern of hers in the open. "Will you dance with me tonight?" It wasn't as serious as it could have been but for a brief moment, the question confused him. To reserve a dance was not that out of the ordinary, he only thought it odd with the pause that held the space before the inquiry. For now, he'll mull over the strange behavior later and bow his head respectably in accepting the offer he had been given.

"I'm honored you would think of me, Lady Conrad." He felt slightly improper as her ward, but he thought it rude to deny her a dance when it was clear to him that she hoped for a yes. It was a bit of a conundrum. "A dance with you is certainly a privilege one would not miss... It would be my pleasure."

Her heart jumped at his words, and for the second time this evening, she feared she might have been blushing.

"Thank you kindly, dear Draven." Best to leave it at that. He still gave nothing more than mixed signs of reciprocation, and she didn't wish to overstep her infuriating bounds as his employer. A dance was all she needed to sate this rampant curiosity. Minutes passed in silence, and the sky grew darker.

"We should get ready for the ball," Gielban said, picking up her meandering pace. "It would be uncouth for us of all people to miss it."
