“You mad lot still bickering with one another? Such energy you all must have to spare, or perhaps bravado really is the virtue of fools. Hah!” For a moment Grinder fell silent as wisps of steam trickled from what passed as the machine’s mouth. With a concerning crunch of metal Grinder raised an arm and pointed to a break in the tree line.

Light seemed to fracture as it passed through the delicate curve of branches, from within the trunk of the tree it seemed to drift free, filling the air with a constant and shifting display.

For the astute of hearing; from Grinder’s chassis came a pleasant whirring crackle, the sound of a clock being wound tight.

“Good, good, not too far now. We pass by this tree then head that way.” Grinder’s hand flicked towards where they needed to go. “There we shall reach the gate, and your journey shall continue.”

Was the robed man behind him self-deprecating in an attempt at deflection? Lithius frowned past the obscuring visage of his helmet, grunting in response to his suspicious partner's excuse. Grinder and the guards kept bickering about Veius-knows-what while he and the masked fellow had a much more... tacit confrontation.

"Mhm." He stated with an ounce of disinterest, an ounce of skepticism, but nothing more came from the exchange. Best to keep quiet, and when the moment presents itself...

The paladin hoped he had the will to do what needed to be done, whatever it may be. For now, there was only the open stretch of grass and trees before them, one that Lithius continued down silently.

Oh, the light, the light was uncomfortably bright! Streaming out from some infernal tree, a razing beam that burned the scarce flesh Sully had left exposed. He thought, but for a moment, that his poor skin would steam as profusely as that nasty little mechanical man. But alas, the light seemed only to burn in thought. Still cringing, trying to burrow deeper into his cloak without seeming conspicuous, Sully passed quickly by the tree.

It was a test. It had to be. No, not a test - a trap. That was the only way to explain why the others weren't writing in agony, what with their lack of voluminous cloaks. The light knew what was deep inside of Sully, oh yes it did, and it sought to punish him for it. Well, he wouldn't have it. He wouldn't stand it. Punishing him, for siding with what was right? What was inevitable?

He reached out for his patron, but she was gone, receded far into the darkness to escape the blaze. Expected, if not disheartening.

"Not too far?" he rasped, turning his mask to face the machine. It was not hard to mask the pain, as his voice was already chock-full of it.
Alone she drifts from ancient mists
Nary a candle, nary a wish
But in the wont of wandering paths
Through wooded knolls, and windworn crags
She seeks a face she thought as friend
But now -- she thinks as judgement's end

Not much farther, Moores thinks. Not much farther before we can be done with this ordeal.

He looks ahead and sees the tree the machine was referring to. At first he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him, but upon looking again, he realized there was light flowing from it. What sort of magic was this? He looks to the elf, from whom he gets an equally baffled expression. He looks forward again. Apparently the paladin had missed it, as he showed no reaction to it.

"What sort of magic is that...?" he asks Grinder, hoping to get at least a slightly better answer than last time.

Grinder’s head moved slowly, eyes training on each person as the stepped into the light of the glass tree. The machination paused as it looked at the cloaked man in the mask, it’s head only seeming to move to keep its gaze squarely trained on Sully. A slight change in how the man moved, hidden, hard to see but still there. Was it due to additional pain? With a faint whirring noise Grinder’s mouth slid open, and it spoke with the gurgle of water.

“Are you uncomfortable?”

Before an answer could be had, that guard captain was off flapping his jaws again. What magic was this tree producing?

“Magic? Magic! Bah! You a being touched by a god! It has tasted your skin and it will know you.” Steam leaked through cracks in Grinder’s carapace, “and you will not leave this forest until you have been categorized.”

Grinder’s words were largely confusing but also telling to the paladin whose mind had largely been lost in his own thoughts. Whatever “Spire” they were going to— it was a location of immense power and magic, despite the automaton’s denial.

Lithius continued to walk in silence, surveying his surroundings with a silent eye. A God, it said? No matter. Veius would protect him, that much was true.

However, silence of the deity within his mind was not comforting.

“Categorized.” Lithius said to himself in a soft, near-inaudible voice, deciphering what Grinder meant; the automaton’s words could have meant a variety of things, yet none of them seemed to have a positive connotation.

The reply bubbled to the surface of the tar in Sully's mind, breaking out from his lips before he even had a chance to realize what it was.

"I be dying."

He would have frozen in shock at the words, but an electric tingle beneath his skin now propelled him forward, a force that was somehow both gentle and unyielding. So he was not trusted to walk this test alone. Though she wouldn't deign him with her presence, his patron still did as she pleased with his body. Well... he had given it to her, hadn't he? His body and his soul.

As soon as the tingle arrived, it had vanished, and the man staggered under the unexpected momentum of his own limbs. Wherever it had touched now burned in agony. Was this is patron's doing? Or the light? He made no reaction, merely lowering his head and continuing his trek alongside the others.

"Categorized," he echoed in reply to Lithius' whisper. He fell in pace beside the paladin, voice lowering to a hoarse mutter itself. "Do not trust."

“Magic? Magic! Bah! You a being touched by a god! It has tasted your skin and it will know you,” the metal man gargled. “And you will not leave this forest until you have been categorized.”

Not the response he was expecting, but still much better than the last one. Though the thought of an unknown deity looking upon them was unsettling, and then the mention of being 'categorized' simply confused him, which only unsettled him more. Was this holy ground they were walking upon? Or something more sinister? He began to think about the rumors surrounding this part of the forest, and w-

"I be dying," the masked man suddenly blurted out.

"Is... is that so?" Moores says in response, pushing down his anxiety. It wasn't working too well, but he managed to at least keep his voice stable. He watched the man carefully. His hand subconsciously tightens around the axe's handle.

I be dying.

It was soft, a realization for the masked man as much as it was for the others involved; still, Lithius couldn’t help but feel... unsurprised. This entire time, he’s doubted what his shady partner had said to him, all the while concerning himself with the deteriorating condition of his damned body— and now, even as the man states the obvious and confirms what the paladin had thought, Lithius couldn’t even bring himself to gloat. To react. If they were truly meeting with a god, then... there was no changing his fate. Veius was silent, having forsaken him long before they’d arrived at this damned spire. Had he been forsaken? There was no way to tell.

Lithius nodded in reply to his masked companion’s statement, having resigned himself to whatever fate lay ahead of him. Still, his mind wandered. The dying corpse of a man walked beside him, falling in stride with the paladin.

Categorized. Do not trust.

A slight turn of the head brought Lithius to look over the dying man. From behind the obscuring and unreadable visage of his winged helmet, the paladin silently acknowledged the warning presented to him. Perhaps, somehow, the man could see the affirmation. Perhaps not.

The paladin resumed his unbreakable stare at the road ahead, silence overtaking the party once more.

For a long moment Grinder’s gaze remained on the masked man, gears gently whirring as they passed by the tree. The machine’s gaze did not falter until the group crossed through the clearing and returned once more into the brush of the forest. Then it’s head turned away, eyes staring up at to some distant point in the overbrush, and the automaton did not move until the the trees once more began to thin and a large structure came into view. Finally Grinder’s head turned back to Sully.

“The Spire is a place of many things, many possibilities, perhaps there you shall find that which you need.” Grinder said, voice a smooth blurble. As the party approached the structure, it became clear enough that it was a grand wall. It reached high up into the sky, well past the tops of ancient trees and constructed of a dull gray metal accented by strips of beautifully colored glass. Within thirty yards of the wall no trees grew, and when one looked either side the wall seemed to stretch out until its gentle curve removed it from view.

Grinder gestured to the east. “That way lies a gate, take me there and there will be a notch in the wall where you can place my body. Almost there you group of slugabeds, let us keep up the pace.”
