Hold for an Audience: The Throne Room

Alone she drifts from ancient mists
Nary a candle, nary a wish
But in the wont of wandering paths
Through wooded knolls, and windworn crags
She seeks a face she thought as friend
But now -- she thinks as judgement's end

Jonathan Allomir, the sergeant in charge of the city's main gate, makes his way to the entrance of Wrenhaven Palace. With him is a knight clad in armor, his side visibly wounded.

"This man, Sir Lithius, requests an audience with Her Majesty. He bears troublesome news of our kingdom's outer perimeters," he announces to the palace guards, his tone both urgent and authoritative. "We request passage to the throne room."

With that, he stands at attention; awaiting their response.

"The palace is currently closed for entry," the stony-faced guard replied, dark brown eyes peering out from behind a visor. "I'm not even sure how you both got this far. The ball has been determined a high risk event by the city guard. If you wish to enter, use the main door and pay the fee."

The other guard nodded, his sandy hair falling in handsome curls around his neck. Unlike his partner, he was unhelmeted, and his seafoam eyes stared at the wounded knight curiously.

"You'll have teh try betteh than tha'," he added lazily, chewing on a blade of grass. "We ain't theh sympathy type, hear?"

To travel this far, only to be rejected right before he accomplished his goal? The gate guard had been kind enough to escort him to this point, but it seemed the hospitality wore off within the inner city. The holy knight crossed his arms, studying the two behind his lustrous helmet. Upon the notion of having to “try harder”, Lithius gave a small scoff.

”This is an important matter that concerns your ruler’s well-being, as well as your own,” The paladin countered. He wasn’t in the mood to speak in circles, and especially detested being redirected elsewhere. Lithius gave a small sigh.

”You obviously seem to want something, aye? Whatever it is you desire, I’m sure it can wait. My warning may very well concern this... gala your ruler has put on. The safety of your kingdom is at risk, and it is imperative I have an audience with Her Majesty.” He continued, his cool tone masking the fact that he was exaggerating his point. Though he did not believe a bandit attack on the ball was likely at all, perhaps it would push the knights in the right direction.

Listening to the knight's retort, the sergeant decides to put in his two cents. "On top of all of that, I work for this city's only standing military. At my request, I am quite sure the captain would not mind giving all of the kingdom's defences a vacation. I mean, it is a holiday after all," he says, his tone quite serious despite the fact that he, himself, doubted that would happen.

"And I would like to add that there is a murderer at large at this very moment. Would you like that on your hands?" At this, his eyes shift between the two, staring them down in turn. Hopefully that would be enough to shake them a little.

"Look," the helmeted guard said, "we don't know who either of you are. We already have our hands on-"

"Delaying important missives? Impeding the security of Azuria?" a stern voice interrupted. Gielban approached from the shadows behind the men, her hair in a chaotic halo, half-laced gown loose around her shoulders. "This being a time of celebration gives you no excuse to shirk your duties. You are to report this sort of request directly to me or Ser Blackwell. Is that understood?"

The green-eyed guard looked poised to argue, but an hawkish glare from the lady quickly silenced him. Somehow, even disheveled and hounded by a fussing handmaid, the ruler of Azuria looked positively intimidating. With hasty apologies and ramshackled salutes, the palace guards retreated. Gielban's gaze turned onto the two men.

"You say there is a danger? Well then - no, Rena, the other comb. And please, tie my lace, this outfit is unbefitting as it stands," she explained in a much calmer tone than before. "I apologize. Please, Sers, tell me what danger may fall. Walk with me."

The paladin shook his head, staring off into the distance as he heard the guard from the gate affirm Lithius’ claims. Not only were there bandit attacks, but a murderer was within Azuria. The holy knight’s ideal view of this wonderful city had since been tarnished, and it was not even a day he had spent within it. The guards rebuffed Lithius and the guard, that is, until a voice called out from behind the two.

The paladin turned and was met with the sight of a woman approaching them. Judging by her tone and decorated attire, it could safely be assumed that this was the ruler that Lithius had tried to find an audience with. After censuring the two palace guards the woman motioned for Lithius and the gate guard to follow her, talking as they walked. The paladin abided the lady’s request, traveling alongside her as he explained what he had encountered upon his travels.

”Mostly all of the villages I had sojourned within were occupied by bandits. The villagers were harassed often, with executions being commonplace. My stays within your satellite settlements were often short due to this,” Lithius calmly explained.

”I am here today to represent the affectd. If action is not taken, I fear that the bandits may soon occupy a great deal of land.”

(Ack, sorry for the delayed reply. My post apparently didn't go through.)

Jonathan glares at the guards before moving along, following Lady Conrad and the knight. He listens to what the knight says, still in disbelief.

"My question is; how have the bandits managed to occupy our villages without our knowing? We receive reports every other day from guard outposts within the villages, and none have even mentioned any bandit activity... " he says to the two of them. "The only reports we've received have been on the goblin issues, which we're currently working on resolving."

He continues on with them, awaiting their response. Even through the thick walls of the throne room, he can faintly hear the music and clamor of the masquerade ball. While anyone else would be upset about missing the ball, he was quite glad. He disdained parties. Mainly for the frivolous dresses that the women wear, and the sleazy undertones of everyone involved.

"Bandits?"

Azuria had dealt with its fair share of internal conflicts in the past, but few on the scale which this knight suggested. Gielban felt a stone growing in the pit of her stomach. No more than a year in office, no more than a few measly months under the mantle, and already she was dealing with civil unrest.

"It would do us well to quell this problem before it grows," she replied. She glanced at the guardsman's uniform. "Seargant, report back to Captain Sutrow. I will have my own guard form a coalition, and if gods will it, the two together will be enough."

A second glance, this time at the tarnished knight.

"I suggest Sutrow exercise caution, and scout the afflicted area first. Not to doubt your claims, Ser, but any claim from a single mouth is dubious."

At that moment, a crash echoed through the palace, followed by a cry of alarm. Though she couldn't make out what was shouted, the tone was enough to spell danger.

"Sers, attend me!" she called, lifting the hem of her still half-done dress and running after the source of the noise. Her handmaid followed close behind, shouting obscenities much unbefitting for a royal servant.

(Exeunt Throne Room, will be continuing in the Masque thread.)

Durael approached the palace, dragging his feet behind him as he walked. The exhaustion from the sleepless night before hadn't quite faded yet, and it was showing very clearly in his haggard expression and slouched posture. By the time he reached the gates, however, he had managed to straighten himself up a bit. Still, even that wasn't enough to hide the tiredness from his face, nor the impatience growing in his mind as he waited for an audience. He cleared his throat loudly, then spoke to any guards in the vicinity.

"Excuse me." He said "I am Quinn Durael, the ambassador of Selentia. Might I request an audience with whoever is in charge of this... fine kingdom?".
