"Very well." Draven spoke and righted himself at her side. Gielban had addressed the decrepit old man and did away with whatever the matter was before his arrival. The young witch came forth with a small tea bag which Draven accepted on Gielban's behalf. He very much intended to put her tea to good use and called for a servant to prepare it.

"My apolgies, I think it best for Sir Trossier to handle it in my stead. I'll be sure to get a report by this evening once everything has settled and Lady Conrad is able to rest." He looked to Mathieu and gestured for him to meet with Rowan.

"If you will, I'd be quite grateful."

Gielban reached forward to take the tea bag, but quickly rescinded her hand as Draven moved to accept. She withdrew into the throne, eyes darting from spot to spot around the room, still slightly uneasy despite her newfound calm. Draven was right. She really did need to sleep. It had been... a far time, for certain, up most of the night the day before to prepare for the masque, up all last night in anticipation of a knife against her throat-

No use thinking about such things. Even with guards posted at every door, the thoughts would find their way in. Silence the voices. Silence.

And for good reason. The assassin melted into shadows. Into shadows, Gielban. Dare not to quell the lights. Dare not to rest alone. He'll be coming for your head, you fool, at Emeric's behest.

SILENCE.

Draven was beside her. She had no need to worry, no right or cause, just an obligation to maintain her face as ruler and maintain her hand over her realm. She really did need to sleep.

"Ser Blackwell," she said, rising (still shakily) from her chair yet again and pacing beside him. Her next words were whispered. "Could... could you post guard at my door while I rest?"

A faint pink tinge to the queen's sallow cheeks, and a nonchalant turn away, regardless of the answer. She needed to maintain her visage. How far had she let it slip in the panic before? Too far for comfort, and too real for her to easily recover. Well, at least she had the excuse of being strained. Instead, her attention fell on Mathieu, the man she had, for all these years, saw as her father's last hold on this world.

But father's hold is everywhere.

"And Ser Mathieu." Words not whispered this time, but spoken with the same tacit softness. "Thank you."

Rowan gives a nod to Draven and looks over to Mathieu, standing straight and waiting for his response. He didn't have much to report, due to a lack of evidence in the city, but he did have a lead. He was clueless on the magic used, unfortunately, and wasn't much more informed on who or what the actual target was. The best he could muster was a couple of possible suspects. The case doesn't look very good at all...

Rowan's proposition to discuss last night's matters was passed down to Mathieu, most likely caused by Draven's responsibility to look after Gielban in her time of... mental vulnerability, to put it nicely. Despite his distaste for the Blackwells, he sincerely hoped that the man's motives were for Lady Conrad's benefit; there was little that the old guard could help with in the wake of Gielban's blowing up at him.

"Of course." Mathieu replied to Draven in a flat tone. He looked to Rowan and was poised to speak before Gielban interjected for a moment, calling his name. Turning his head for a moment, he waited for whatever she had to say to him. Another scolding, perhaps? Or was it another assignment to add onto this damned investigation—

"Thank you."

The surprise on the aged guard's face was evident for a moment before a neutral expression overtook it. He forced himself to give a small, yet genuine, smile. Silence as he debated what to say.

"Just... er, doing my— you're welcome." Mathieu eventually stated, his expectations subverted entirely and not knowing entriely how to respond. The smile faded to apathy as he turned back to Rowan.

"Regarding the report of last night's... events, what leads do you have, if at all?"

Rowan closes his eyes for a moment, thinking. He had no hard facts. Only suspicions. And he knew only the barebones of the magic used on the people at the ball. With a sigh, he looks at the old guard with a tired expression.

"I don't have much, to be honest. I know the magic used to attack the guards and ball attendees was a spell known as 'candlemist;' a very rare magic that attacks the soul directly," he says, giving silent thanks to the ambassador. "I have no idea what he did to the castle, which is why I brought the witch here. I was hoping she could diagnose the situation."

He pulls a piece of paper from a pouch on his belt and proceeds to unfold it. He squints his eyes and begins reading. "According to a report from one of my sergeants, a strange masked man had approached the knight who had met with the queen yesterday," he starts, eyeing Mathieu before resuming. "Not too suspicious at first, but then he apparently elicited his help in journeying to the Spire. Another thing of note is that the masked man matched the approximate height and weight of the assailant. I dispatched a small party to pursue them."
