Alex couldn't help but smell something strange in the air. It had passed straight by her, followed by an armored man. It didn't smell like the others, but a guard was chasing it. Maybe the woman worked with the magic guy? She looked to see the woman be blocked off by someone else. Something indeed was going on. She bowed lightly. "Just a moment..." She followed after the guard to see if he needed any assistance.

Gustav

Oh, the pleasure of dancing with a beautiful woman. Gustav kept up with the waltz with Josephine (that he didn't know was Josephine) in his arms, furrowing his brows when she called him by his given name. That's when the suspicion first got to him. Did they know each other, outside of the castle's walls?

"As you seem to have knowledge of my name, it's unfair that I do not know yours, don't you think, Milady?" He mentioned with a charming grin. "To have such a beautiful pearl in my arms and not being able to call her by her name... It feels like a sin."

Josephine winced slightly at him saying Pearl. Maybe he knew it was her and was playing coy. Still, she indulged him.

"Josephine Ward," she said, purposely avoiding her name. She couldn't help but smile at his flirting nature, amused by it. He rarely did this at work and she wondered of her identity would shock him. Her gown swept across the floor as they danced and her smile grew.

"Lord Aleksander! Are you feeling ill? You might want to sit down..."

He shook his head, his hair brushing past the edges of the mask. With his free hand he covered Alma's gently, Giving it a light squeeze.

"No, no, it's passed already. I'm quite fine now. But thank you, my dear, for coming to my rescue." He straightened back up, a smile hidden from view as he released her hand. He took a small step back and gave her a deep, long bow. As he straightened back up, he offered her a hand, the other working his mask all the way up. "Now, I believe I made you a promise. I intend to uphold it."

Ryder sighed, his eyes wandering to a very pple looking couple. Alma and Aleks.

"And 'ere is the most adorable couple in all of Azuria. Although their love is just now bloomin', I believe they would fit together well. Aleksander isn't lookin' too good though. Reckon just bein' 'ere is givin' 'im a 'ard time of it.

I'm still wonderin' if 'is sister poisoned 'im. I never thought Lady Conrad to be evil enough, but power can do crazy things. I guess my investigations will continue at this awful palace," Ryder said, eyes wandering back to Ebony and the strange lad she was dancing with.

He then stood and began walking along the roof's edge, fingers intertwined behind his neck. The wind toussled his blonde hair and he disappeared, to deliver more news.

(Continued from Palace Infirmary)

Durael moved quite quickly through the hall, not taking much care of where he was going- or who he was knocking into. Thankfully, he didn't cause any major accidents, but he got a few irritated glares from some of the guests he accidentally hit. Not that he noticed, of course. His gaze was unmoving, fixed only on the exit, paying no mind to what was going on around him until he finally reached the doors.

He was stopped by a guard, but eventually waved through once the guard knew who he was talking to.

Gustav

Gustav's eyes widened in shock. "Josephine?" He repeated in a breathless murmur. Partially because he didn't think his humble cook could look that good under a fancy dress, but for the most part, he was just skeptical of it all. "How did you get here?" He asked, furrowing his brows. The question didn't stop the dancing however, as he kept guiding her through the dance floor, in sync with the other couples.

***

Alma and Cyan

When Aleks offered his hand to her the most genuine smile filled Alma's lips. That was it; a dream come true. The girl placed her small, pale hands on top of his and allowed him to lead her through the dance floor, to what it would end up being her most precious memory until this day.

On the other end of the ballroom, after the song had already started, Cyan contorted his nose in disgust. How dared he, a nobody, speak to him that way? If it hadn't been for Ebony's presence and how important it was for him to keep a certain image in front of her, he would have put that filthy animal in his place. "I'll have the next dance, then." he forced himself to say, smirking in Enoby's direction before walking away, towards one of the castle's guards.

"That person. Keep an eye on them." He whispered, sliding a golden coin into the man's pocket. After getting a proper response and a word of 'thank you' from the servant Cyan walked away, waiting for the waltz to be over. His eyes scanned the ballroom once again, and spotted his sister dancing with the Lord Conrad. Two sick people, dancing as if there wasn't an enormous possibility that they would faint at any second. How pitiful.

Cyan was observative. He knew there was something about Lord Aleksander that attracted his sister, though he couldn't quite tell what. Their relationship was nothing but a fairy tale; idealistic and utterly impossible. It'd never happen because Lady Gielban would never allow it, with Alma being a Fray, and even if Aleksander's health improved, which was unlikely, and if he ended up being charmed by his petite sister, no lord would ever wed a sick wife. It was obvious to anyone that Alma, being her current fragile self, would never be able to survive a pregnancy. A wife who can't generate heirs is completely useless.

When the waltz was over, Cyan approached his sister. He bowed to lord Aleksander before turning to Alma, speaking in a polite, expressionless tone. "It's late, Alma. Time for you to return to your room."

Alma knew this moment would come, so when Cyan approached her, she wasn't at all surprised. At least it was after she got her dance with Aleksander. She smiled at him one last time, breathing heavily from the slow dance. Her lungs never worked that well.

"Thank you for this dance, milord." Alma said with a bow. She wanted to say so much more. She wanted to say she loved him. That she'd treasure that moment forever in her memory, and that she'd stop for a visit his tower first thing in the morning. Out of the three, there were only two she'd been brave enough to say out loud. And neither of them were words she could say in front of her brother.

After a final, sweet smile Alma took her brother's arm and he escorted her to the exit of the ballroom, where she'd meet one of her maids that were to take her back to her room. Alma wanted to stay in the party for longer, but she'd learned not to upset her brother. From the exit of the hall, she glanced at Aleksander another time, before turning her back on the festivities and making her way through the corridor, her arm laced with the servant's.

"Yes, it's the plain cook that was late to work today," she said with a smile and a laugh. Then his next question made her stiffen.
Josephine's grip tightened on Gustav's shoulder, and she looked around. It was humiliating to admit, but she must.

"I was... lured here. By a terrible man. I'm not sure if you heard the ruckus just now, but he was performing terrible magic. He-" she broke off, thinking of the woman that had been murdered before her just so she could have a pretty gown and mask.

"I'll tell you if we are ever alone," she finally said, after swallowing. She danced closer to Gustav, lips tightening in determination.

"Thank you for the dance Gustav. I rather like your attire," she said with a grin, taking in the ostentatious suit.

Wrenhaven Palace

Five.

The music rose and fall in waves of classical crescendo, guiding the dancing highblood patrons down below.

Four.

Guards stood at every door, so certain they could protect this night from further harm, so certain of their skill.

Three.

The moon hung in the night's sky. The night was not young, but it was not yet late.

Two.

A low, soft hum danced through the empty halls outside the ballroom. If any were in earshot, they might think it the wind.

One.

Fifty-seven seals, bound inside the palace walls, broke at once. Somewhere in the evening outside, a carrenwing smiled. It was not the full hundred he had intended to place, but that was only for redundancy. This would be enough.

Blue flames flared, eating away at unseen magic deep within Wrenhaven's stones. It thrummed in hollow wails, a sound that carried down to the festival below, marking the arrival of the shades. The fire did not seem to harm the palace, but still the walls shuddered. Cracks crawled through the masonry like languid rivers, eating at marble, granite, and plaster alike. A loud crack, the sound of shattering glass, resonated in the ballroom, and and the music immediately stopped.

The fires died. The shaking stopped. But an eerie sense was left hanging in the air, the feeling of something... missing.

Claire nearly dropped her platter. Several of the treats went skittering off and away, onto the floor and the clothing of nobles too startled to react immediately. The fires had gone as suddenly as they'd appeared, but they'd left cracks behind in walls that had certainly not been fragile.

There was no way this silence would last, and when it broke, there'd be a stampede. She began moving towards the edge of the room.
