@ Battery

Mirmuse paused obligingly, tilting xyr head in fascination as Battery did... something. His hair puffed out like a garol's spikes, and Mirmuse instinctively fell into a crouch, xyr own spikes puffed in mimicry. Xe twitched xyr head, straining xyr ears for whatever was spooking Battery: it if was freaking him out, it was hard for xem to not be uneasy too. Nothing but the wind, the sounds of xyr companions, and the distant voices of the town: xe had no idea what it was that Battery had sensed.

"What is it?" xe asked, squinting at the air around him: maybe it was something small and fast enough that xe hadn't been able to see it? "Did you see the thing we're looking for? Like, the evil thing?"

@ Group.

Hearing battery say something was ahead Jack quickly made his way to him. His rifle at the ready, he looked around the area, Val scanning for anything unusual. Though she found nothing Jack remained ready for action. Though he didn't know much about battery he didn't seem the type to jump at shadows. If he thought something was there...something was probably there.

"Val isn't picking up anything...doesn't mean it's not there. You think it's a hostile?" Jack asked as looked around again, just waiting for something to jump from the shadows.

"I didn't hear anything either," Sasha said, thumbing the handle of her sword as she walked. There didn't seem to be anyone out here, actually, save for miles and miles of flat earth and nothingness. She'd heard plenty of stories of Terres, and how the land seemed to go on for forever...but nothing like this. Nothing like the emptiness that tugged across the vast flat of cracked earth.

"How do we know there even is a thing?" Rannok asked, looking around him. This place in the distance looked close enough to his childhood home that had he not known he was in another plane somewhere, he might have hoped, he might have wondered. Phina nodded, walking as confidently as ever beside them, as far as he could tell completely unarmed. She'd left the goggles Battery had given her dangling loosely around her neck, rather than around her eyes where they belonged.

"He has a point," she said dryly. "For all we know the thing in the ship was the evil one."

Rannok didn't want to think about that, and concentrated on the road ahead. As the people got closer, they looked up from their work outside their tent and stared like they'd seen ghosts.

Outsiders!

Rannok heard the shots before they were close enough to move, and the men began to scatter as they approached, behind what he could now see was a low wall. As they got even closer the men retreated behind it, and he sheathed his sword and held his hands up.

"Don't come any closer," one of them ordered, holding what Rannok could now see was a crude sword in front of him.

"We aren't looking to hurt--Aah!"

Something small and thin landed in the meat between his collarbone and shoulder. He winced and grabbed at it. A small, thin needle protruded from his flesh. He yanked it out and stared at it as it laid in his palm. There were feathers on the end...feathers that looked like...

Rannok's vision began to go spotty and he looked over at Sasha to say something, but his limbs went numb before he could open his mouth and he crumpled to the ground.

"Rannok!" She lunged forward, but the man jerked his sword and she took another step back, hands raised.

"If you want him alive, you will not come any closer! We are tired of you interlopers from other worlds at the temple!"

As soon as Rannok dropped, Battery jumped in between him and the men with his shield raised. He stared the closest man down through the translucent white energy. "Explain, shithead. If I have to make you talk, I will be very creative." Something about these men, being so close to them made the pain in Battery's tattoos intensify, and a very familiar voice at the edge of his awareness, too far away to be understood. He braced his shield with his right arm and grit his teeth, waiting for an attack. "Make my fuckin' day, prick..."

The answers you seek are ahead.

The voice floated through the chink in Battery's armor again, just before the translucent white energy cut out, severed like someone dimming a light switch. Phina's eyes widened, and her mouth pressed together in a hard line.

"Threatening us is not going to get anyone what they want," she said calmly, not moving from her spot, the wings on her back bristling in irritation.

The man raised his sword again, then reached forward and grabbed Rannok by the collar before holding it to his neck. "I said not to move!"

Sasha let out a frightened sound more animal than human, flinching toward him for only a moment before she stopped herself. "We don't want to be here either. Just let him go!"

The man laughed. "Oh yeah? That's what the men with the dragonfly wings that came last time said before they burned down half our village."

Mirmuse trilled, high-pitched and threatening. Xe cast xyr mind to heroes from stories xe’d read as a calf, tried to think of what someone like xyr sire would do. They wouldn’t show weakness: they’d do whatever they needed to get their friends back. They wouldn’t just stand there like a coward.

“And if you don’t let him go we’ll burn the other half,” xe snapped, stepping out into the light. Xe snapped xyr beak to empathize the point, the click loud. Xe hoped no one could tell that xe had dug xyr claws into the ground to stop them from trembling, not out of anger. Xe hoped they couldn’t see the shake in xyr shoulders or the fear in xyr eyes. On the inside, Mirmuse felt sick. This was exactly what xe’d never wanted to do.

“Look, we don’t know anything about other people coming here: we don’t want to hurt anyone but you’re kinda forcing our claws here.”

Xe didn’t know what else to do. Xe couldn’t just couldn’t let them drag Rannok off to have god-knew-what done to him. Sure, xe hadn’t known him for long, but he was still xyr friend. No matter what the “dragonfly wing men” had done, Rannok didn’t deserve to get hurt for it. Hopefully xe could just bluff them into letting him go. They wouldn’t just kill him in cold blood, would they?

@showdown

The man clutched tighter, the ghost of a laugh in his expression. "I will lose nothing of value then and will have taken one for my own." He threw Rannok at his feet, close enough the others still couldn't reach. One wing crumpled underneath his body at an odd angle, and his eyes were glassy.

"I don't know what you intend to do with us, then," Phina replied, all ice. Her hands clenched into fists. The man stared back at her.

"You will come with me. You will leave your weapons here. If any of you are to threaten me--" he gave a glance to Mirmuse. "--your friend will die. Understood?"

The man heaved Rannok over his shoulder.

Sasha resolved to kill him when she got the opportunity.

"Hostiles!" David exclaimed, his light blue eyes becoming a bright, angry red and a pair of lazer cannons emerging from his wrists, pointing them towards the men. His sudden willingness to attack faltered once Rannok had been taken hostage, arms falling to his sides in defeat, but his eye color remaining the same shade of red. Reluctantly, David withdrew his lazer cannons back into his wrist and looked around at his fellow crewmembers as if to say 'just tell me when, and I'll eliminate the threat.'

@Scuffle
“This has been a grave misunderstanding.” Mai said, her hands raised to show that she carried no weapons. She made no motion to move until she was ordered to start stepping. This had been an extremely delicate situation and all they had dropped a sledgehammer on it, not that other man, or she assumed men had done much on their side to make things better.

Still, it was too late to stop the wheel from turning now. 'We come in peace' wasn't exactly the most useful thing to say after threats had been made. So, she followed a different tact.

“If we follow along peacefully will you tell us about the men with the dragonfly wings?” She forced herself to breathe calmly, ignored the drumming of her own heart as she had done countless times before. If the man was telling the truth, then they found what they were sent here for, she hoped at the very least. And, so long as they could get this man to trust them, they could get Rannok back.

Hopefully.

"I'm with you David..."

Jack said, his rifle trained on the man holding Rannok. All he needed was one shot and this threat was eliminated. David and his cannons could take care of anyone else that got close.
