"I'll be fine. How is everyone else?" James had said, already beginning to go around and check on everyone. He too was beginning to think everyone was accounted for besides Jack, although he really didn't know about the experiments they were rescuing. There was only time to hope they had got them all before the building began to collapse, the fire spreading ever faster as it grew.

And then, while he made his rounds, she was back again. He'd been right, Jack was still inside with whatever experiments he'd managed to free. He was instantly worried for his brother, but at the same time only more angry at whoever had started the fire. She had that same look again, tearing at her clothes and telling him that she was going to help before she ran off. He tried to grab her, stop her from running into obvious danger, but she was too fast.
"Damn it, Ophelia! You're going to get yourself killed one of these times."
By now it seemed the roof was overtaken with fire, and he could tell it was spreading downward from there.
-
Once things began collapsing, the situation got worse quickly. The ceiling was crumbling, Jack could see flames working their way through to the inside of the building, and the smoke was now making him and his band of rescues choke and cough. He did his best to keep the group moving, struggling as he carried one child and did his best to help the others and keep them from panicking. He had to pull one kid out of the way of a flaming ceiling tile that fell, and the stretch ahead of them didn't seem much better. Much the opposite, they were still a ways away from any door and the way ahead seemed only worse. It was lucky the kids seemed to trust him, as he managed to lead them ahead despite the dire surroundings.
"You probably shouldn't... It's getting bad in here pretty fast." Jack responded into the radio, although he didn't want to scare the others who were with him more than need be. He got the feeling it didn't matter; the girl was coming to help whether he wanted her to or not.
At least the guards didn't seem concerned with them anymore, more concerned with the fire.

As she approached the burning building, she could immediately feel the intense heat on her skin, the smoke heavy in the air. All of her instincts were telling her to turn around and run, but her mind overruled that. It was because of her that the raid began early....and if Jack and the others died in the process... it would have all been for nothing. There was a slight chance they could all make it out alive, but she had to act quickly. Without wasting a moment more, she swallowed her fear and entered the flame lined doorway.

The inside of the building was akin to hell. The walls were on fire and the heat smashed into her like a painful wave. The smoke billowed out in thick tendrils causing her to cough and gasp for air, while her ears were filled with the sounds of tortured screams from the facility personnel trying to flee, but were unable. Oh, gods. Holding her arms up in front of her face, she pressed onwards at as face a pace as she could manage.

"Jack?!," she called, moving deeper into the inferno. A beam of wood suddenly collapsed before her, causing Ophelia to gasp in surprise and stumble away. Straining to look forward, she could just make out the familiar shape of Jack and his rescues. She had found him! "This way!," she shouted, rushing over to them. Ophelia immediately picked up one of the smaller children and took the hand of another. "If we have hurry," she coughed. If they didn't, the ceiling would collapse on top of them, but turning around and going deeper into the building would be suicide.

He called back to her, struggling to keep the whole group calm enough to keep going despite the flames. As dangerous as it was for her to come help him, he had to admit that the help was much needed and he was glad for it -he just hoped she wouldn't be another casualty.

With her help he managed to get the group moving faster, lifting the kids over burning wood and ceiling tile alike as needed on their way out. He was actually surprised to see so much wood in a place like this; clearly more than a few corners had been cut in building it, and they were showing now as the fire quickly reduced it all to rubble around them. He continued on, soon able to see the door to outside through which she had come. It was surrounded by fire, but it looked usable enough for now.
He coughed as he hurried towards it, the smoke burning his lungs and stinging his eyes, and he wondered whose stupid idea this was as he heard screaming from deeper inside the building. Whoever they were, there was no saving them now if the whole building was in such bad shape -all he and Ophelia could hope to do was get themselves and the kids he had convinced to follow him out alive.

As they traversed the burning corridor there was a few moments she had feared for their lives. Yet despite all the dangers that assaulted them the door was finally in view. After a few more agonizing steps, they had stepped outside into the night air, blissfully free of the hell behind them. What they had just accomplished was nothing short of a miracle. "We made it," she coughed, falling to her knees and removing the piece of shirt that was wrapped around her face. "I can't believe we actually made it...," she laughed. She was shocked, but thoroughly amused by their sheer dumb luck. Lived to tell the tale another day.

Some members of their group came to help them out, particularly the younger rescues whom were more affected by the smoke. Ophelia remained seated on the grass, the young woman taking a moment to catch her breath and have a well deserved rest. The raid may have been set off early, but everyone was accounted for and they had freed all they could from the facility. They had done it. But they weren't our of the woods yet. There was still much to do and their numbers has grown exponentially. They had to house and shelter all of them, treat all the injured, cloth and feed them, teach them about the outside world. It was no easy task and definitely not easy to organize. This was why James was in charge and she stayed far away from any sort leadership role.

She'd stay where she was until James have the order to move out, as she didn't know if James wanted them back to their previous hideout or if they were going somewhere different entirely.

Jack herded the group of kids outside after her, following after them and earning himself a burn on the arm when a bit of burning building fell on him. All he could do at that point was keep it away from the child he was carrying -who was understandably crying by now, but it didn't look too bad and he made it out alive. He'd definitely been hurt worse, but that didn't mean the burn wasn't extremely painful. He swore, coughing again as he made sure to put considerable distance between the group of them and the collapsing building incase it threw out hot particles as it collapsed.

As he stood outside, making sure the kids he had saved were all accounted for, he noticed members of both his own group and the larger group helping out. They made sure everyone was okay and offered drinks of water, applying first aid where needed.

Soon enough, James gave the order to move out. Everyone was tired, but it would do no good for anyone to still be there when the authorities showed up to deal with the fire. He sent a radio message over to the group with Ophelia and Jack, telling them to move out the north gate and down to the road some distance away. This was where the rest of their group was waiting with transportation for the injured or otherwise flightless among them. The early raid meant that everything was far less prepared and organized than he had hoped, and yet he had no choice but to work with what he had.

Someone was kind enough to offer her a bottle of water, which she accepted gratefully. She drank deeply, the cool water refreshing after the heat of the fire. Surprisingly, she hadn't sustained any burns but her wings were slightly singed and the upper half of her face was blackened from the ash and smoke. It wasn't long before James had gave them the order to move out, Ophelia reluctantly getting up and following the others out the north gate.

Taking up the rear, she was one of the last people to arrive at the meeting spot along the road. There was quite a bit of them gathered, so it was hard to find a particular perosn if one wasn't looking closely. That was fine with her. She knew James was going to scold her sooner or later, but she preferred if he waited until they had both gotten some rest.

Without drawing attention to herself, she boarded one of the buses they had obtained for their transportation needs, and found an empty seat towards the back. She doubted anyone would sit with her, which was fine with her.

James was far too busy to scold her at the moment, getting everyone organized and on the way home was a much higher priority at the moment than dealing with her. Even with Jack and a few others helping, the number of new rescues added to the early timing of the raid made everything that much more difficult, and he was clearly stressed. At least his injuries sustained during the raid had stopped hurting, as relatively minor as they were. Soon enough he had everyone packed up and on their way to the home of the normal doctor who took care of them for much needed medical assessment and care, and besides that food and rest. They would figure out housing and such for the new additions in the morning. He took off, leading those who felt well enough to fly back, and leaving Jack and a couple others in charge of the grounded ones.

Jack helped out, doing his job as one of the leaders in getting everyone who wasn't flying boarded onto a car or bus for the trip back home. Once that was done, he boarded one of the busses himself and decided to find Ophelia. Thanks were definitely in order, she'd risked her freedom and her life twice today to save him.
He found her at the back of the bus and sat beside her,
"Hey.. Thanks for helping me out." He said, "I definitely owe you."

Ophelia could have flown back if she wanted too, but after her little dance with fire, she wanted to give her wings a break. Letting out a small sigh, she brought a knee up and rested her hand on it. The bus' engine started and began to roll down the dirt road, just as Jack came to sit down beside her. She looked over at him for a moment and then looked away, her lips slightly pursed. Actually, she looked rather silly with her smoke induced raccoon mask over her eyes.

"I guess you can sit with me," she teased, moving over a bit to make room. She flashed him a small smile and nodded when he thanked her. "Don't mention it. You have some valuable information, right? I couldn't just let them keep you." Although, she probably could have waited for everyone to be ready for the raid. Oops.

Her eyes met his, a serious look coming over her rather pretty features. "Did you see anything in their records about an experiment named Isaac?"

Jack looked pretty soot covered himself, still coughing occasionally as he'd been at the back of the group in the fire and had breathed in a little more smoke as he worked to make sure all the kids got out safely.

He smiled too, "Some, I suppose. Most of it I already passed along, but still I wasn't too interested in an extended stay in a place like that." He said as he sat beside her, amused by her teasing. Had he really never interacted with her before?

He looked back at her, thinking for a moment. "Do you have the lab number? They don't use names on the scientist side of things. I take it that's somebody you know?"

Ophelia knew that most of the information that Jack had stolen from the scientists was already passed along. It was how she knew exactly how to infiltrate the building. It was also how she knew that her brother wasn't in the facility they had just raided. Yet, she still has hope that maybe Jack had found some information about where he could be located. "I don't blame you. James wanted to leave you there for a few more days buuut I decided to go break you out anyway," she said, chuckling almost sheepishly. "Ugh he's going to give me quite the lecture...," she groaned, sinking a bit on her seat. She was not looking forward to that.

When Jack asked her for her brothers lab number, she gave it to him quickly, having it memorized. "2407," she said, her eyes saddening ever so slightly. She had diverted her gaze out the window, her eyes watching the scenery pass by. "It's my brother's number." It was obviously a sensitive topic for her. "He didn't escape when I did..."
