Groundworks Lore (WIP)

Post by Annasiel » Mon Sep 18, 2017 8:57 pm

Economy

The strong Azurian economy is backed by the precious metals common to the nearby mountains.

There are three main coins: The golden sword, the silver spear, and the bronze shield. Ten shields to a spear, ten spears to a sword. In most places, a few shields are enough for a good meal, and a spear enough for night lodgings. The average worker makes two spear daily.

Luxury exports: Gold, silver, copper, iron, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires.

Other exports: Granite, marble.

Major imports: Crafts, tradesmen, glass, wood.

Sustained economies: Agriculture, livestock.

Nary a candle, nary a wish
But in the wont of wandering paths
Through wooded knolls, and windworn crags
She seeks a face she thought as friend
But now -- she thinks as judgement's end

Geography

The city of Azuria is set in a natural recess, in the basin of a semi-circular mountain range. Long, flat plains occupy this valley. The range opens up to a small harbor to the west, which functions as Azuria's main trade route to the larger world. Paths also exist in the mountains, but they can be difficult for larger caravans to pass through, making them much more common for small traders and lone traveling groups.

The best guarded and maintained path from the harbor to the city is Merchant's Trod, a mile-long road paved in granite stone.

Further east, still within the city walls but beyond the main bustle, lies Wrenhaven Palace.

South of the city and beyond the walls is the Torren Amphitheater.

Technology

Azuria is set in a mediaeval fantasy world. While most technology unaided matches that of the middle ages, it surpasses it greatly in utility when considering magical components. The arcane arts and alchemy hold a prevalent place in Azuria's, and the rest of the world's, creations.

Culture

As with our Middle Ages, there is a major disconnect between both the sexes and the different social castes. Men are seen as traditional centers of power and women as supporters and homemakers, the rich seen as right and just and the poor as filthy animals. Though this view isn't prevalent in all cultures, it was in Azuria until recently. Some resentment still exists over the recent social changes.

Different races are another source of tension. The mixing of different beliefs, appearances, and backgrounds is far from seamless, and all sides are both perpetrators and victims of bigoted violence.

Politics

Azuria is a consolidated city-state, meaning the kingdom entails the walled capital and the lands surrounding it. The majority of the population live in Azuria proper, with farmers, miners, hunters, and such scattered sparsely in the surrounding mountains and countryside. It remains diplomatically neutral in most external affairs, and has a strong economic backing due to its local resources (gold, silver, copper, iron, and various gemstones).

It is ruled by a local aristocrat, the Lady Gielban Conrad, current seat of the House Gielban, who has held this place for almost a year now. Other minor aristocrats hold estates in the kingdom's bounds as well, and occasionally feud for control.

Though there is frequent infighting, Azuria currently peacefully coexists on a global scale.

History

Azuria, though peaceful on the international front, has been subject to centuries of infighting amongst various noble and gentry families.

Twenty-eight years prior, Lord Emeric Conrad gathered the support of the military and commoners, launching a bloodless coup against the then-ruling House Calahan. After taking control, the bloodless turned bloody; to protect against usurpation by "rightful" rulers, he had all remaining Calahans executed in an event now known as The Pruning of Wrenhaven.

Ten years prior, the late Lady Ainwin Conrad passed, supposedly by tripping down the stairs. The nation mourned.

One year prior, Lord Conrad and his son, Aleksander, grew greviously ill. Emeric passed within a day, and Alek was left cripped, barely able to leave his room due to fevers and constant seizures. Gielban, Emeric's daughter, seized the position as head of House Conrad and ruler of Azuria in the wake.
