Azriel's words, "I want to", repeated in her head as she felt his hands work at her body. Lyra found herself conscious of her breathing and the amount of effort it took to keep her chest rising and sinking. The crackling of the fire mimicked only a fraction of the tension between them. Lyra tried to concentrate on anything else but the strength yet gentleness in his hands or the heat coming from his body that was inches away or the way his breath tickled her kneck.

Then, as suddenly as it began, Azriel pulled away. The cool night air creeped on to her skin now that he was no longer near, putting out the growing flame between them. Lyra could tell Azriel was battling with something, perhaps the same thing she was battling with. It made her feel guilty, for it had to be so much harder for Azriel. He had more to think about, more to lose. What did Lyra have to worry about if things continued between them? Getting used to living in a castle? Hiding away from prying eyes so that Azriel wouldn't be ridiculed?

Lyra's heart sank at the thought of it all, her gaze shifting to the fire, its light filling the small cave. "How are you feeling?" She answered his question with another, her eyes still fixed on the dancing flames. "I know you've had a lot on your mind. As much as mine, if not more." The sounds of the night filled the cave, her gaze turning to meet his eyes. Those stormy gray eyes that she had come to love. The thought of having to give up searching their depths...it was too much to think about.

Lyra couldn't help but smile at him. "You know, your eyes are my favorite. They say so much without saying anything at all." She laughed after a moment, unable to help herself. Looking at the ground she asked, "are we fools for trying to fight this?" Knowing well he'd know exactly what she meant. "Weve only been alone for a day and it's already difficult."

There were no words to describe how Azriel felt when Lyra smile at him. She smiled directly at him and told him about his eyes. It wasn't the first he'd heard those words, but it was time they meant something to him. Mor often told Azriel his eyes held all the emotions his body could not express. His dad had said many things about his eyes, including cutting out one of them if he misbehaved again. Unfortunately, or fortunately, none of them experience that before the previous king had died. Having the same words he'd heard multiple times come from Lyra made brought back the warm feeling that usually accompanied Lyra's presence.

"Thank you," his voice was soft yet heavy with gratitude. His eyes shone with it and something else that extended down to his heart. At her question, he couldn't help but laugh along with her, "Are we fools? Possibly. I don't intend to let you go, so I suppose it is foolish. What's stopping us right now, besides ourselves? To answer your earlier question, I could be better. I could have my sister back. I could be comfortable in bed with you with no worries plaguing our minds," he spoke, his voice remaining gentle. He could imagine it now. A small smile crossed his face, "I'll take what I can get...even if it's the inside of the cave."

Lyra could here the intention behind his words, the seduction in his voice. A vision flashed in her mind at his mention of them in bed together, body entangled with body and sheets somewhere in between. A light pink crept into her cheeks and she prayed to any god that was listening that the dim yellow light from the fire did not let it show. Her eyes looked at him in a different way now, timid yet hungry.

"I don't want to be a fool anymore." Her voice was soft yet husky. Her heart raced, her legs quivered ever so slightly, and her mouth felt dry. Lyra's body began to move on it's own, her hand reaching up to stroke his exposed cheek and beard. Maybe it was exhaustion or maybe it was the buzz her body was on, but his skin was softer than she remembered. "Azriel..." Lyra could feel her heart traveling up to her throat. She watched as the shadows from the flames danced on his face. More than anything she wanted to kiss him, to hold him and have him hold her, but she was afraid. Afraid of what it would mean for both of them.

The king remained rooted firm as if his feet were stuck to the ground. He told himself he would give Lyra time, to figure out whether she felt something for him, or if it was her grief masquerading as affection. He told himself he would put space between them until his sister was found. He told himself he would give himself more time to figure out whether he felt something for her, or if it was his gratitude for her actions masquerading as affection. There were so many things he told himself, and he reminded himself of that when he saw the look in her eyes that matched his own: hunger. Stiff as he was his eyes told a different story as they fixated on Lyra, wild and stormy.

When she spoke Azriel felt his pulse quicken. If he did not move now, away, they might do something they would regret. Yet the second the thought crossed his mind, he knew there would be no regret. His breaths were measured and his eyes closed when her soft cool hands touched his cheek. They snapped wide open when she mentioned his name. His name on her lips was his undoing. Azriel wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her to him, his eyes lingering on hers as he caressed her cheek. "Lyra..." came the deep sound that became a statement for what was about to happen. He brought his lips down to meet hers, finally closing off any space that remained between them. All the tension that had built over the course of the entire day exploded when Azriel's lips met hers. They moved slowly, mimicking the electricity that ignited around them. Then Azriel brought Lyra closer and he leaned down farther as if he was had been without water for days and only Lyra held what he needed. His hands began to move...

(Yup! 👍🏽)

The fire had gone out at some point in the night, allowing the golden rays of the sun to slowly stretch its fingers into the cave and caress any exposed skin. Lyra stirred and shifted under the blanket onto her back, releasing a happy sigh. Her emerald eyes opened and looked at the jagged rock above, watching the particles in the air dance in circles. Slowly she turned her head towards her king, seeing him lying there looking so peaceful.

Last night was everything she could have hoped for and more. Her heart felt full, no traces of regret to be found. Lyra lightly planted a kiss on Azriel's bare shoulder before getting up and putting clothes on. She approached the entrance of the cave and stretched as she greeted Shadow tied to a near by tree. Petting the beast, she fed him breakfast and watered him.

She felt lighter now which made her feel giddy, like this ball of energy swirling in the pit of her stomach. Part of her couldn't believe what had happened, that either of them had lost a control as they did, but she was so glad. Sitting at the entrance of the cave she chewed on dried meat, watching the golden orb in the sky reach over the horizon and playing back the happenings of the night before.

Azriel felt the warmth on his face before he fully came to consciousness. At first, he thought it was Lyra's hand light, warm and soft on his cheek but it felt different enough for him to open his eyes to see it. It was the sun. The rays dispersed into the cave that marked the morning so clearly, Azriel knew he had to check to make sure they were still on track for the journey. But not before he closed his eyes and remembered every part of Lyra. He felt lighter. All the responsibilities that rested on his shoulders yesterday remained on today, but he felt relaxed.

He heard Lyra outside when he woke up so he took time to put his clothes back on and fold everything they had unpacked. It felt as if all the years of tension had been let go and the Lyra's warmth warmed him up inside and out. He ran a hand through his hair as he watched Lyra at the mouth of the cave, chewing on the dry meat they had packed. She looked so peaceful, so in tune with the rest of nature. She belonged and stood out all at the same time. The king knew that once he got back to the castle, there were changes he had to put into effect right away.

The sun seemed to create more warmth as Azriel inched closer and closer to Lyra. He knelt down beside her and watched the source of the heat silently with her. After a few moments, however, he spoke, "It's a good morning. Isn't it?" his hand gently caressed her cheek before he leaned forward and placed a kiss on her forehead. There were no regrets, no limits, and there was no going back now. Whatever line that stood between them had been crossed last night, and it would be no use to try to get behind it again. He pulled away and began packing anything else that had been left over from the night before. Once it was all complete, he dispersed the pile of wood that he gave them fire last night enough to make it difficult to guess there had been inhabitants of the area just moments before.

Lyra could hear movement behind her but continued looking at the horizon. Part of her was afraid that it had all just been a dream and if she looked at Azriel now the spell would be broken. So she waited and felt him approach her. Lyra held her breath as the king knelt down beside her. She took a chance and peeked at him, his stormy eyes staring at the horizon. A smile parted her lips at the realization that it hadn't been a dream. "The best morning." She whispered in reply.

Azriel caressed her cheek and kissed her forehead causing her to feel a twinge in her heart. It was odd feeling so at peace with all that still lie ahead of them, but she did. Finishing her breakfast she helped with packing the horse back up and watched azriel move around the small cave that felt more like home. Lyra could have stood there and watched him forever. He was so graceful, so gentle with his strong, slender hands.

"You're beautiful." She said from the entrance, softly smiling. "I dont know if you know that, but you are." If only she could pause time, to stay here in this moment forever, to feel this way forever. If only, but she felt guilty knowing that Bri was still waiting, had been waiting for 10 years for her brother to come save her. They were another day closer and they couldn't stop now, no matter how much she wished it. "I just want to enjoy this for one more mintue." Lyrs could feel tears burning at the back of her eyes, but she blinked them away.

Azriel enjoyed the silent morning. It said more things than anything he or Lyra could say at the moment. He placed everything back to where it had been on Shadow but paused when he heard Lyra's words. He couldn't help but laugh at that but he listened when she continued. With everything cleaned and packed, he walked to where Lyra stood. He heard the meaning behind her words and knew he would be lying to himself if I claimed he didn't feel the same way.

His arms wrapped around Lyra as he stood behind her to watch the suns lowly rise up. The silence took over for a few seconds until Azriel spoke, "Not many men would take being called 'beautiful' as a compliment," he teased her a bit, just to lighten the mood. "I do want to experience more of this with you..." As much as he wanted to make the promise that they would, he knew he couldn't. There were so many other factors that could affect how much time he spent with Lyra. He hadn't planned for things to move this quickly and for once in ten years, Azriel didn't have a strategy. He didn't know what the next step would be with Lyra. All he knew at this point in time, was that he wouldn't take a step back.

"Lyra, my role puts me in a position where I can't make you any promises because the unpredictable conditions may make it impossible for me to fulfill them. But I can promise to bring you back here. Maybe once in a while or whenever you wish." He knew it would cost him, but to make Lyra happy he would do it. He placed a kiss on top of her head before he moved away, letting his hand slide down to hers, "For now, we have to continue." He released her hand and walked to Shadow where he mounted the horse and brought it to the entrance of the cave. He held out a hand for Lyra to take so he could place her on.

Azriel held Lyra in a warm embrace, her hands gently placed on his strong arms holding them close. Birds flew by in the sky and into the trees to feed their young, small rodents scurried on the ground, and foxes played in a field. Life seemed so peaceful and simple then. Like there wasn't anything wrong and never had been. Simple bliss. Then Azriel spoke and it all came crashing down. She turned to face him.

Lyra couldn't meet his eyes then. "I'm not asking you to make any promises I know you won't be able to keep. I knew before we crossed any lines that there might be no 'us' in the future." Her gaze shifted from the ground, to the cave behind him, and then to his face. There was a spark of the woman he first met, strong and brave. "If all I have is last night and right now, then I will forever cherish those memories. I won't ask anymore of you." And she meant every word.

As much as she wanted to pretend they could save his sister, go back to his castle, and play family, she knew it was fanciful. It was a dream, a dream maybe the old her could have believed and hoped for, but not now. Lyra had changed so much from the moment her village was burnt to the ground. She had surprised herself with just how strong and resourceful she could be. It had never been second nature before. Though she'd be lying if she didn't say that she'd never thought she'd trust anyone again. After Tamun how could she? Yet somehow Azriel and even Mor had come into her life, rather she came into theirs, and had somehow become friends of sorts. Comrades in the least.

Lyra followed Azriel with her eyes as he mounted shadow and rode him towards her, reaching out his hand. It was a sight she has seen many times by now, yet it always gave her butterflies. Her hand grabbed his and she pulled herself up, looking back once more at what used tto be their camp. You'd never guess they were there or that anything had ever happened. It made her heart sink, a sadness washing over her, but she said no more as they rode off, steeling herself as she had the day they had met.

(Should we do another time skip here of them arriving at Gani's?)

(Yup!)

The rest of the journey had continued in a similar fashion through Lyra's words lingered in Azriel's mind. He altered between thinking of Lyra and her situation with him, then about his sister and her situation with Gani. Both brought him comfort and both troubled him. By the time they arrived at the edge of Gani's territory Azriel's hair was ruffled from the various time he'd stressfully ran his hand through his hair unconsciously, and his beard had grown more than he'd like. He pushed everything out of his mind as he often did when going into battle. He leaned down to whisper to Lyra, "We wait here for his patrol to escort us to the castle," he'd said this a few times during their journey, and he knew Lyra remembered them well. Still, it settled him to repeat them again, "You may speak if you want as if we do not know each other. I am not your king..." to Gani, it would be as if Azriel had brought Lyra along to be a witness that the stone he was giving to the man was true.

"It would be helpful if you were indifferent to me and I to you. He will be welcoming, but cautious. Friendly, but it will slip many times to show his true character. The less we say around him, the better. He can pick clues from anything you say," he sighed as he took a breath. His eyes gazed over the mountainous region that Gani called home, slopes high and low that stretched for miles. Some had trees, some were bare. His grey stormy eyes seemed to have become solid with focus.

His eyes went back to her again. He knew one thing for sure: he will bring Lyra out of this kingdom no matter what it took. Azriel had seemed many parts of Lyra since they began this journey and he knew there was more he had yet to see. The steel grey eyes moved to her wrist, where her bracelet was. Even now the power called to him, but he was rooted deep in the woman that wore the bracelet. He had told Lyra it was best if she stayed away from Gani in the beginning, not until he was about to offer up the stone. Lyra would hold it. Any power Gani feels at that point he would think came from the stone, not from her.

Azriel's jaw was set hard, determined as he had been the first day he'd seen Lyra. Except he had been wrong then. This time, he was right. And he would not hold back. Not too far away he heard the sound of hooves on the ground. The patrol. Azriel leaned down to Lyra again and asked, "How are you feeling?" he wanted to make sure she was alright. She may not have wanted promises from him, but he wanted them. He wanted to promise her memories and happiness.
