Azriel's fingers tickled her cheek as he brushed her hair aside. She could feel her heart racing as he spoke. He sounded so confident and matter-of-fact she could believe him if she let herself. Lyra could so easily allow herself to drown in those gray eyes of his. Eyes like a stormy sea who's waves crashed over her, pulling her into it's dark depths. It was like he was casting a spell on her, entranced by every word and every syllable he uttered. But then the spell was broken and he kissed her.

Her breath caught in her throat as their lips met, that familiar twinge in her chest returning. Yet his touch was so short lived before that breath was released, half in enjoyment and half in disappointment. Lyra wanted more for so many reasons, but she couldn't bring herself to ask for it. It wasn't the time and she knew that and so she buried the aching, yearning feeling deep inside, for it was the only way she would complete this mission.

A sight so familiar played in front of her as Azriel offered his hand atop Shadow, forcing her to pause. Lyra looked up at her King and took a mental picture before grabbing his hand and settling atop the beast as well. It felt safe and right having Azriel so close which settled her busy mind. There was no turning back now and in a few short days there plan woul be put to the test.

Even in his younger years, Azriel was not Mor. He was more outgoing, playful and free but he was not talkative. As he maneuvered Shadow from behind Lyra, the sun seemed to delay its rise. They rode in silence until they reached the edge of Azriel's territory. The king paused for a minute, standing out and looking over the castle and the vast land that he had to look over, take care of. The land that stretched past his line of sight, yet he had grown to want to care for all those people.

"What do you think?" Azriel said quietly. "I've seen this same view in flames, in blood, in screams. And every day when I have to put on that crown and pretend I don't mind sorting out arguments between grown men, I think of this. This peace. I'd give anything for this," he pulled his eyes from the vast land and turned the horse around once more, "This is where our journey begins."

Slowly Shadow carried the couple to the kingdom's edge in a peaceful silence. All was still and seemed to glisten as the glow of the sun timidly rose over the horizon. Lyra looked back over the land as Azriel asked her what she thought. Her eyes scanned the towering castle, the small villages nestled around it, and the fields of grain and produce. "Its beautiful." Her voice was soft and quiet, yet sincere. Slowly the town below began to wake, lanterns being lit and farmers already beginning to work their land as the suns ray's licked over everything with its liquid gold.

This was Azriels kingdom. These were the people, the lives he was responsible for. To be so selfless and so committed to a cause that was thrust upon you was admirable of him. He did it with grace and dignity, with strength and elegance. Making sure Bri returned was not near what he deserve. Azriel deserved so much more in life, he deserved everything he wanted and more. But life is cruel and who know if he would receive half of his rewards for his good deeds. Then Azriel guided Shadow back around and there was no turning back.

Azriel rode in silence once again, finding it only by the grace of all things good that he was able to still think with Lyra so close. As he maneuvered his faithful horse down the path marked by the indigienous people around his kingdom, he thought about Lyra and her people. He had been pressured by the nobles to take any unclaimed land that stretched between his kingdom and the next one. If he had done so years ago, would he have met Lyra sooner? Would her people still be alive? Azriel had learned long ago to not dwell on what could have been because he knew in the process of taking over those lands, he would have to kill some. He didn't ponder which option was better for Lyra's people.

Somehow she had soaked in the sun's rays that sitting next to him he felt like she was glowing. She stood out, yet blended into the nature of the forest so well Azriel felt a deep sympathy for her. She had been stuck in an enclosed castle made of stone for days. He hoped she enjoyed their journey, even though it was toward something less appealing. She carried herself with respect and grace and even though he saw her in a much more different light now, he couldn't forget the first day he'd met her. Her fierceness, her stubbornness, and her loyalty were also there, hidden underneath that warm smile. Azriel's feelings for Lyra were a mix of respect, attraction, and something else he wasn't ready to admit.

"I hope you're enjoying the view. Being in the castle must be very different from what you're used to," he commented quietly as to not disturb the natural ongoings of the forest. It had been hours by now and the sun was almost in the middle of the sky.

It had been hours and the rhythmic sway of the horse's trot was entrancing. Lyra breathed in the crisp, fresh air and admired nature's beauty. It was hard not to notice every shade of green there was in the leaves of a single tree or the way the wings of a bird flapped so gracefully. The feel of the sun on her skin gave her the sense of being wrapped in a blanket. It gave her life. That's what nature was, life giving. It was like coming home.

Her posture relaxed into Azriel, all tension from her body disappearing. She felt truly at ease, it was almost like a dream. "This is more my element." Lyra admitted softly as if half asleep. "This is where I feel most at home." This feeling of ease was liberating. If only she could feel like this forever. She wanted more than anything to share all there is to know and see of nature with Azriel. To show him all of the beauty and wonders. Lyra was sure with some time he would fit in nicely with the dirt and streams and meadows, but that chance seemed it might not come.

Lyra's fears were always beneath the surface. Trying to burst the tension of the momentary peace she felt. What if Bri was already dead? What if she had been dead for years and Gani was simply taking advantage of Azriel? What if she was alive but they couldn't get her back? How much longer would Azriel have to wait to see his sister? There were a thousand unanswered questions, all of which made her tense again.

It was hard thinking of something to say or if she should say anything at all, but she found the words somehow. "My people had a special way with nature. It was always about respect and coexistence. We did not take more than we needed and respected anything we took by utilizing every part. As much as nature can be beautiful, she can also be cruel. That is why my people chose to live where they did. To be a part of nature, to remember the importance of her creations and what she can do for us, but to also remember our place in everything."

Nikolas shifted forward to support Lyra as she relaxed against him. She felt as light as air as she was so immersed in the environment. Nikolas looked around also, understanding Lyra just a bit. He always loved riding Shadow in these very trees long ago but only because he loved the liberating feeling of being I'm the wide open. He never took the time really look at nature. Even now, he was looking at the woman sitting in front of him. It was easy to become distracted by the woman in front of him. But following her eyes, he was able to see some of what she saw. It was all so beautiful, untouched by humans. "I...I wish I could have seen your home," he told Lyra truthfully.

He wanted to see her to show him around, introduce him to her people, watch her play with children because he knew Lyra would do something if the sort. He wanted go see her in her element, surrounded by leaves and utterly comfortable. He wanted to see her happy. He had seen her smile and laugh which made him wonder just how much of that had she done before their paths crossed. He would always remember the first day he saw her, what he has done and what he had been willing to do. He would never let himself forget and woild never stop trying to make it up to her.

Lyra wasn't expecting the King's response. It had taken her so off guard she wasn't sure what to say. So she decided to say nothing as they continued to sway in unison to the rhythm of Shadows gate. Letting the sounds of the creatures around them fill the silence.

It had been hours of riding and when they finally stopped the sun was a soft orange orb floating just above the horizon. There was a nook in the side of a large rocky hill that they decided to make home for the night. Lyra dismounted and groaned as she stretched, rubbing at her aching buttox and hips. It was her second time riding a horse and the longest she had ridden one. Her body was not used to it and she doubted it would adapt within the next two days. Already the thought of getting back up on Shadow put a throbbing in her muscles she didn't want to think about, so she set out to grab some wood before all the light left them.

After finally getting the fire started and getting Shadow fed and watered, the duo set up there sleeping places for the night and ate small portions of the rations they had brought. Lyra looked at Azriel through the flames as he sat across from her. She wondered what he was feeling and thinking. Was he scared? Was he excited or nervous? Or was he simply confident?

Although Lyra's shoulder had healed a bit, all the riding had made it sore as well as the rest of her body. "Who knew riding a horse was hard work." A small laugh followed her words as she tried to distract either of them from thinking too much about what the future held. "You probably never get sore from it anymore." Lyra began to gently massage her injured shoulder as she spoke. "It's weird to think the things the human body can get used to."

Nik helped Lyra set up once they stopped. He was more familiar with the course of how to unpack but not fully and stay the night but not make their presence known. He hadn't bothered to bring an entire tent but instead two lightweight beddings, sleeping bags. As he fed Shadow his mind went back ten years where he heard his sister's laughter. His sister had been two years younger than him, which made her 17 when she was taken. It had been ten years spent in captivity, in a foreign land. He couldn't help but wonder whether she had been kept in a dungeon the whole time, or taken to a closed off room. Whether she had the chance to see the sun or had always been in darkness.

Before leaving his sister was the third missing piece in the trio that included Azriel himself and Mor. Azriel was the quiet mischevious one though the leader, Mor was the talkative one with the ideas, and Bryn...she had the means. She was no inventor, but she was creative in ways that no matter how crazy Mor's idea was, it was within reach. More was friendly and amicable, she was fiery, sarcastic yet sensitive to those she loved. Had she changed?

The king's eyes slowly turned to Lyra, coming from his memories. It took him a moment to say, "I don't think I remember the negative effects of riding a horse for the first time. Only feeling very alive," he left Shadow with a last pat and walked to Lyra, "Do you feel sore?" he asked as he reached for her shoulder. "Strange thing about learning to fight. It makes you learn every inch of the body," he began to massage the areas that felt a bit warm indicating soreness. He couldn't help but think of his sister with Lyra's last comment. To be somewhere foreign for ten years, the place may not seem so foreign anymore. So many things went through his mind while Azriel massaged Lyra's shoulder gently and effectively. He wasn't sure if thinking about his sister was a distraction to keep from acting on what he felt for Lyra at the moment or vice versa.

"You must be some sort of super human." Lyra teased Azriel. The next thing she knew the King approached her and began to massage her sore muscles, leaving her no room to reply. As his skin made contact it was like a bolt of electricity through her body. She felt herself tense before slowly relaxing at the pressure. His thumbs and fingers worked adeptly to loosen her muscles making her feel like she was slowly turning into a puddle. A small moan escaped her lips, followed by a sigh. "Y-you dont have to do this." Although she said the words, she couldn't deny how good it felt after riding all day.

There were a few more days of riding to go and she would just have to adjust to the throbbing soreness her body felt. It was nothing compared to the conflict in her brain. The need to resolve the situation with Bri, the need to learn more about the powers she possessed, dealing with the loss of her people and everything she ever knew, and the unknown of what lie ahead for her and Azriel. Muscle pain was nothing compared to all that.

Yet there was one thing that trumped everything else, one thing that screamed for attention, that yearned for it. These feelings she felt everytime Azriel was near, everytime he touched her or looked at her with those dark gray eyes. They grew stronger with each passing day, screaming to be noticed, to be acknowledged. And yet she knew it wasn't that simple, but then nothing ever is.

Azriel couldn't help the smile that came onto his face as he felt Lyra relax. After the small moan that came before the sigh, Azriel paused his fingers, wondering if this was a smart thing to do. It really didn't seem like it. Not now, when they were so close, separated only by a few centimeters of air. Not now, when they were so alone, away from the eyes and ears of the court. Not now, when there were more pressing matters at hand, important matters that required their full attention. The tension that built in the small space between them could have been enough to create a magnet strong enough to bring the two farthest people in the world together. Yet they were supposed to resist. "I want to."

The king continued his massage but now the little details were clear as day. The way her curls sat perfectly still along her shoulder and moved at the slightest gust of wind. The way the small reveal of her sun-kissed skin glistened by the light of the fire. Her shoulders firm with use over the years, but soft and requiring the gentlest of touch. Azriel pulled back to keep the massage from turning sensual. The tension had mounted so high he could feel his heart beating fast. He ran a hand through his hair and cursed under his breath as he turned around to face the moon. He thought he had self-control or at least more than he was currently displaying at the moment.

The whole trip was based on both of their ability to control themselves. From the very first time saw Lyra he knew she had self-control that stretched beyond the average man or woman. He always prided himself in having control over himself and his actions. None of that seemed to matter at this moment, and this was only the first night. He didn't know it would be this difficult. The king turned back around to face Lyra, sounding as rough as he was about to be honest, "It seems we have a dilemma that I highly underestimated... how do you feel now?"
