Oh! She could fly! That was something new. Chie had never seen anyone really fly before. Which lead to a different problem of how do you beat someone who was flying? Throw rocks? Chie had plenty of rocks, and grass, and dirt. She didn't want to throw the rocks. That just seemed mean. No one wanted to get hit by a rock. Honoka seemed to reach some sort of apex in her ascent as Chie stood on the ground, hands on her hips looking up.

If she could do those wind blast things from up high, Chie knew she would be in trouble. If Honoka just blasted the mist away then Chie would be exposed. She could make more, sure, but the process was annoyingly slow. The half she had been spending the whole match in had so far only barely started to reach across the divide.

And, then an idea struck Chie. Not a fantastic idea but it was an idea. No matter what Honoka did it would cause the mist to spread outwards and make a hole in the middle. Probabaly. So the idea would be essentially the same as her first one. Build up a wall to force the mist and wind to go where she wanted it to go. Or the force of the wind would topple her little wall.

This would only really work anyway if Honoka came down.

If she stuck in the sky and fired blasts of air Chie was doomed. Wasn't much she could do about that though, so no sense in worrying.

Now, the second part of her plan -- she was in the wrong patch of mist. Not that she couldn't make it work with where she was, but the vapor was thinner. If her plan went to hell, then she would be much better off with the thick mist, it would give her more to play with.

Chie hoped.

No sense in worrying about it. With a roll of her shoulders, Chie pushed off her left leg and dashed towards the edge of the pool of vapor she had been using, and without a single flicker of hesitation she broke out of her protective screen and dove for the other patch of mist.

Getting up-close is a mistake.
Getting up-close was a mistake.
Why did she land?
Chie had her own suit of armor spreading around the field, and Honoka just landed in it. Or rather, the one place it didn't exist. She didn't have a lot of time to think, but her previous approach seemed like too much.
Honoka couldn't fly up so soon. Chie could target her as she was launching.
But now she had to notice everything around her. Everything subtle, opaque nowhere near it. It was like gas. Well, it was gas.
It was like clouds, but these rained dirt.

Charging at Chie, she hopped to the side with grace. This left Ono charging at nothing, which she only barely managed to stop by creating an air cushion.
She never thought of making an air cushion before.. It never seemed necessary, but this girl was not like the others.

She's smart She admitted to herself, after trying to psych herself out thinking she could be beaten with ease. Motivation or not, it was false.

While Honoka tried to avoid close-range combat, Chie... Well, how would Ono know?
So long as she didn't know, she had a disadvantage. Chie clearly knew her preference. She is flying and shooting concentrated air!

Or at least, was.

Standing in between two clouds, Honoka noticed they were slow, but only that before she knew she'd get blindsided if she stared at everything for too long.
Her expression was the usual mix of uncertainty and unwillingness to speak, but although the fight lit her spark, there was something else to it now.
..fear? Or perhaps relief? This was a unique opponent. What was she going to do?

Honoka swung her right arm, her hand beginning open but finishing closed.
This, in turn with the rotational axis her arm was moving on, threw a more prolonged yet slightly less accurate beam of wind.

As she did, she saw the mist moving slowly into her field of vision, standing between her and Chie.
The next opportunity she gets, she needs to become airborne. But she couldn't keep it up forever. Charging at someone should knock them out, not wear you down...

If she could just fly up..
She could throw a curve ball of air at her feet and charge at her.. Maybe open her arms to try and atta- No, that was a bit too much.. She wanted to neither fail nor succeed with throwing a punch.

I have to go up.
I need to go up.
It's time.
She could close me in if I don't move.

Honoka's wings hurt a bit.
They don't usually hurt.
Honoka just felt like a sitting duck whole floating in front of someone with capabilities like Chie... She didn't know if she was right. But she couldn't avoid that feeling.
And now it backfired.

She had to, no matter how risky. She'd fall otherwise.

Blasting as many rounds as she could, each one was like a tuft of cotton. It needed to be strong.
It needed to be a cover.

Charging up into the air, it was where she was the most vulnerable throughout the fight. Here. Now.

Why did she feel like this?

Oh! She's flying again! It was very pretty in a I-wish-I-could-do-that sort of way. Not that now was particularly the time to be idly admiring one's opponent. Now was the time to act! Not that she was quite sure what her next move would be. The other girl was still close enough that Chie could toss some rocks, but that still seemed way too mean. Who wants to get hit by a rock? And what if Honoka got seriously hurt by it? Ms Fujioka was here, but that didn't mean that Honoka wouldn't get hurt.

Instead, Chie returned to the tried and true method at hucking balls of earth at the other girl while she was still in range. Not really going to be the reason she'll win, probably, but at least her conscious would be clear as she lost.

But seriously, now what? What was Honoka going to do? Then, with a flash of teeth and a bounce in her step a different idea struck Chie. Would it work? Maybe, possibly, probably (not)! With a breath, Chie turned her attention away from
Honoka and down to the ground. She had about half of her mist, so that was a plus.

Again, Chie focused on turning the ground to vapor, but this time instead of just yanking out a hole or taking it all evening, she shaped it like a bowl. Most taken from the middle and less from the outer edges. Around the edge of her current huddle of vapor Chie then built up a solid mound of dirt. Rocks at the bottom surrounded by compacted earth. If she did it right, then maybe when Honoka did her attack, it would force her mist up into the air instead of displacing it downwards. Maybe?

Was that how physics worked?

Only one way to find out!

No! Godammit! Chie was hurling balls of dirt at her. If she got anything on her wings, it could disrupt her flow! It was like replacing a flying bird's wings with gliding ones. She wouldn't have time to practice what would eventually fall off her wings.
At least what she threw was physically harmless. Strategically speaking.. it could mess her up.

Flying in a loop the loop sort of fashion, Honoka almost fell. She wasn't that good at maneuvers, and trying to make an infinite sign, she nearly fell face first into one of Chie's balls of dirt.
She adctually did get hit, on her dress, on the lower left side of her abdomen.

She dropped a few inches, but was able to stop herself from falling on the ground.
Soon, though, the center of the arena was gone, vapor in its place, some being pushed down on one side and pushed up on the side closer to Chie from Ono's attempt to stay afloat.

A curvature in the middle of the playing field, almost like a giant bowl.
On the one hand, she could use the bowl to build up speed. But on the other hand, it was clear that if she flew straight into the bowl, Chie could rematerialize the dirt that was once inside of it, either trapping her or..-
She shuddered at the thought even though she thought Chie was kind enough not to do it.
Which, in turn, meant that it would be unfair of Ono to not try just as much not to harm Chie, even though it was all speculation.

Getting chie inside her own bowl of vapor would just give her a powerful shield.
Maybe she could redirect attacks? She was out of ideas...
Well, except for one.

She couldn't let her eyes drop from her target, but as the vapor crossed between her and Chie, Honoka closed her eyes. She took a deep breath, and lit the fire in her heart as it was lit atop her head.

She wasn't going to be stopped, but she didn't have to be.

Grabbing a handful of breeze, she spun. Her moves were like her agent told her to do.
Be graceful, and showcase whatever she had that interested the public as a magical girl.

With her, the breeze grew, and called the vapor to come along. She didn't need to aim it at the bottom of the bowl.
She didn't need to send it at Chie, or anything.
All she needed to do, was throw it away.

And so she did.
Flying with whatever she could carry, Honoka sent a miniscule part of the vapor far out the side of the arena.
And she wasn't done.

She spun around it, the bowl. She knew that Chie could trap her inside if she wasn't careful, but she was ready for it.
A pedestal of vapor. She couldn't carry it away, so she could thin down its horizontal volume.
And with that, she could charge at Chie, so as Chie could cause the tower of Pisa that she had created plummet onto her. But that would include Chie.
She charged with all that she had, hoping to get a hit on her. But this time, she did it from the side if the vapor, and not passing between it or through or anything. She came in from the side, and she would keep flying from the side until she'd exhaust herself. One of them was going down, and she didn't know who it would be.
What she did know was that just as Chie held her own, so must Honoka do whatever she can to win, and do it the best way she can with whatever tools she's given.

Well that was a problem.

Chie crossed her arms across her chest while vapor swirled around her, her head tilted up while she watched Honoka flying in a circle. Now what? She was up there, and Chie was down here, and her mists were being pulled upward and away. Soon her cover would be gone, and then where would she be? In a bowl of dirt on the ground that's where. That wasn't a good place to be, so she needed a new plan.

Well, actually.

Could she still use the thin mist still? Chie didn't know, she had never really tried before. She wasn't used to her mist being thin. But if it did work, well, then she would have to decide what she was going to do.

If she could knock the girl off balance…

How much dirt did she have in the vapor? It was thin and stretched, so not much. But it also hadn't sent down a shower of dust and grit so it should be thick enough still for her to use it. What would happen if she just materialized everything all at once? Wasn't like she had any other grand scheme.

Chie drew in a breath and bowed her head. She focused on the thrum of her own heart pounding against her breast, ignored the hiss of the wind around her as it whipped and snapped. She stretched herself out, touched the thin fringes where her control was slight, where she couldn't even reduce herself to vapor, and tugged. And, she felt a response, a rippling feeling of expulsion as everything she was holding onto was released in a sudden flurry of dust, dirt, and stone.

This is working! It's actually working!
As Honoka spun in the air, she could feel her surroundings getting.. clearer? Whatever it was, it was visible. The field of vapor soon curled up into a stalagmite of whitish mist.
But, what would be next? How could she reach Chie without pulling some of the vapor back down with her? And now, it was easier than ever for more of it to follow her like infrared homing missiles.
Well, her worries were soon spared as greater ones sprung. Chie did what Honoka could only hope would not happen. As Ono spun around the pedestal of vapor, it grew into a being of dirt, like a second stage in a boss battle.
But the worse was still to come, as bits and pieces of dirt, light enough to be carried by Ono's gusty influence. Now, it was a race. Honoka swinging and changing her pattern as bits and pieces fell outside of the arena, much to some of the fellow students' disdain.
The rest, however, fell back down around the pit, which was not the most desirable outcome.
But it was now that Chie had barely any vapor. Most of it has reverted back to dirt.
It was now that she had to carry herself in her own momentum, charging down in what could only be described as a rain of dirt, or an upside-down bullet hell.

Honoka could feel herself getting muddied up as grains of dirt met her back from trailing her from the top, and others falling slower than her stuck to her front, getting in her hair and on her face. Not enough to blind her, fortunately.
But she had to commit. She was hurtling down to the ground.

Wait, why was she doing that?
Either way, someone would get hurt!
Could she redirect herself?
She couldn't harm Chie.
She couldn't be that kind of person.

..
...

She couldn't be evil. She knew she was good. So.. why did it feel so empowering to charge down?
Why did it feel like a blessing to have this much strength?
...goddammit, dad.

Following the path instructed to her as many others by her parents, Honoka knew she was doing something wrong. She was training to be a hero, so why was she aiming to hurt her fellow competitor?
..
...

Honoka focused on her momentum, and tried her hardest to redirect it. Reposition herself.

With the mightiest gusts of wind that she and the power given to her by her momentum and gravity, Honoka attempted to slow herself down in what ended up being a lighter attack against Chie who was right in her trajectory.
Well, as Honoka charged down to Earth, she could feel her body burn from the speed. She wasn't used to controlling herself through such immense speeds, and her wings were only adding to the effect.
She was scared.

Seeing the ground get closer and closer, Honoka spun around, giving herself the worst nausea she had ever experienced, but in the process grabbed the dirt falling behind her and tossed it down in time for impact, her and Chie one above the other, a heap of dirt cushioning both Honoka's fall and both girls' impact.

Well, that worked about as well as expected.

Dirt filled the air like a haze, well there was already a haze in the air but now that haze was brown. And falling. Chie rested her hands in her hips, and frowned, perhaps she hadn't thought this through. She had an about of vapor around her, but no way she could absorb up all that dirt. And the other girl was still zipping around, being followed by a tumbling mass of earth. What was she supposed to do about that?

And to make matters worse, the other girl was now falling from the sky. Chie frowned, her eyebrows momentarily knit. What sort of tricks did she have left up her sleeve? Chie flicked her right wrist up, away from her hip. Ono hurtled downward, as the wall, impossibly thin took shape around her and --

TWUMF.

Chie heard the heavy sound of wind hitting earth, followed by a sound not exactly unlike rain, just heavier and the smell of earth.

It took Chie a moment to realize she wasn’t in the ring anymore, and a glance to her left let her know Honoka wasn't either. Ms Fujioka was standing between them, taking notes on her clipboard. The suit coat and long skirt she had been wearing replaced by a long silver dress. She finished her note with a decisive click of her pen.

“Very good you two. Feel free to drop by the nurse’s office to wash off and have a quick physical.” On her lips a faint smile as she looked out at the reddish-brown haze which had once been the training field. Her eyes then lingered on each girl in turn. “If you would like to watch the remainder of the fights we will be at sparring field two.”

She made a waving motion with her clipboard. “Shoo, shoo. Go get changed and washed up.”
