Escaping Lenora (Umbra)

Post by DaTurtle » Sun Mar 19, 2017 1:15 am

Ren yawned as he approached the gate, he approached with no army and no backup, just the leather jacket on his shoulders and a blade at his hip. His nobility granted access into the city, he was allowed to immediately enter and bypass the line that was forming on the bridge full of traders or travelers. The guards only had to look at his pass which was issued to all nobility by the people's council.

When inside newcomers were welcomed by the sight of Low Town, a crime ridden neighborhood where the poor population lived. He Slyph wouldn't be here, he wasn't too far behind the slavers which meant she probably hasn't been sold yet. Two city guards approached him, and gave a salute. "My lord, would you like an escort through Low Town? Some of the people living here make a living by pickpocketing visitors." The guard explained. Ren nodded to him. "Very well, I'm heading to the Nobel lodge then." Ren said and continued walking as the guards followed him closely.

After reaching the lodge the guards headed back to their post, Ren didn't bother entering the lodge which was meant to be a meeting place for the kingdoms nobility, He had no business with them. Instead he began walking to the city square. A large stage filled with slaves stood above the crowd. Ren began looking through them hoping to find Slyph.

Listless wispy clouds drifted around the midsummer sun which kept the square, although not unbearable, hot. Sporadic cooling winds came and went on a whim, carrying with them the scents of soured stale sweat and the sharp smells of unwashed bodies. The crowd below was a mass of movement and sound, calls of bets and jeers mingled into an untidy roar. Sylph remained as still as she could manage, her short tunic, a cheap roughspun piece of brown cloth which itched and scratched at her soft skin with each movement. The clothing she had worn when they had captured her, a fine silken dress, was long gone. Sold to some merchant of some little village for a handful of silver crests, the tunic she was given to wear was the same cheap clothing given to all slaves.

The hem of the tunic barely reached mid-thigh, the neckline had a slit which descended down to the sternum, and was loosely tied with rawhide string. Ill fitting and uncomfortable seemed to have been the intention of the designer, and they were apparently masters of their craft.

“Sold!” The auctioneer called to a cheer from the mass. The slave at the center of the stage, a thin male with no light left within his eyes was lead from the stage as a hand ensnared her arm. With a jerk a guard with more muscle than brain pulled her from where she had been ordered to wait, and to the front of the stage. The auctioneer half turned as she approached, a crooked grin of his lips showing yellowed teeth. He swiped his right hand in her direction, as if to detect the gazes of the crowd below.

“Today, we have a special treat, nobility.” The man said, a smug turn to his voice. “Healthy, captured unharmed, and uncorrupted. She is a soft and weak thing, unsuited for hard labor - but - pretty things have a different sort of value. Buyer beware, this rare little treat is quite headstrong.” Slyph felt her jaw clench as the man slowly circled her, her posture remained rigid, her shoulders back, her head high, her eyes glowering down at the crowd.

“But, headstrong things are fun to break, no?” The auctioneer came to a stop at her side, and tossed his right arm into the air. “Let us start the bidding at ten Sovereigns!”

Ren watched closely as Slyph was brought before the crowd, many hungry eyes fell on her. Ren noticed the twisted smirks and grins that the slavers passed to each other, a large man raised his fat hand and began the bidding war. Ren quickly began pushing through before he felt a hand push against his chest stopping him. The hand belonged to an auction official, he scanned Renard and gave a fake smile. "Sir, you must be new to the auction, do you have a valid certificate from our board?" He asked as he stepped in front of Ren. "Certificate for what?" Ren asked with an annoyed expression. The official laughed. "Well it is so we can verify you have proper money to purchase our stock." He explained as the auctioneer raised the price to 36 sovereigns, the large man who started it stopped bidding after it reached 30. Ren had a feeling he wouldn't be able to get the required document in time, it was clear that the official didn't want a new comer to ruin today's auction.

Ren backed away as the bid reached into 50's, there were only two bidders left, a young noblewoman Ren recognized but didn't wish to think of and a tall thin man wearing white robes, probably a cultist. He needed to think fast before she was sold.

“Fifty gold Sovereigns to the man in the white!” The auctioneer announced, with a flourish of his hand. The wretched man hid his glee poorly with each successful bounce of the bet between some robed man, or highborn looking woman. The fat man who had thrown his hand up fumed where he stood in the middle of the crowd. At least, when all was said and done she wouldn't belong to him. Not that the man in white seemed a better prospect. Not that any of it seemed a better prospect.

“Come now, this isn't a treat which you are likely to see again, elven nobility! You don't want this prize to slip through your fingers!” The auctioneer said. An attempt to rouse the crowd, to start up another round of betting. There was another movement in the edge of her vision as the noblewoman lifted her fan.

“Fifty-five Sovereigns to the good lady!” A murmur rolled through the crowd, astonishment, and gripes as the price continued to grow.

Renard suddenly heard someone approached, a cloaked figure appeared. "Salutations friend, it appears you aren't familiar with our little auction." Ren looked over as the man with a smooth but we'll carried voice pulled back his hood to reveal his pointed beard and oddly styled auburn hair. "I'm not..." He simply said too frustrated to make pointless small talk. "Well you seem odly interested in that girl, I could help." The man said and raised his scroll. "If you have the coin I'll win her for you, but I also have another price, I'll explain after we win." He continued as Ren appeared stunned. This stranger obviously wanted her too for some reason, but he didn't have time to argue. "Fine..." He said and pulled his coin purse from his belt and handed it to the man. "100 sovereigns... make it fast." The odd man smiled and gave a simple nod which looked more like a spear thrust with his pointed beard. The man walked into the crowd waiting for it to slow around 57 sovereigns then raised it to 65, no one had the coin to appose him.

"Sold!" The auctioneer cried and had the guards escort the girl over to the red headed man, who smiled as the guards released her. The man then bowed as if being in front of royalty. "Ah, so lovely to see you my dear. Sorry to cut introductions short but I have a feeling your... sponsor." He said at first struggling to find the word as he gestured to Renard who stood away from the crowd and watched from a distance. He wasn't sure what to do now, he hadn't seen her in five years and wasn't sure how she was going to react to seeing him, needles to say he was worried. The red headed man offered her his arm and guided the two lost friends back together. "Do you two know each other? He seems awfully flustered to see you." He asked.

“Sold!” The auctioneer cried, and an excited roar rippled through the crowd. The betting had all but stopped at fifty-seven from the man in the white robe, and the noble woman had seemed reluctant to continue the struggle when an unknown party had increased the bid to sixty-five. None had any desire to match the staggering sum so Slyph with a creeping numbness found herself being lead away from the stage. It was a short walk, but Sylph took it in a daze, the scratch of her shirt against her left shoulder the only thing keeping her grounded.

The man the guard nudged her towards had an auburn beard, stiff and pointed like a spike. The one who had purchased her. A feeling of indignation drew her from the stupor, caused her to once more square her shoulders and return a spiteful edge to her gaze. The man bowed, a smooth motion which knocked her off balance. Her lips parted as the man spoke, directed her gaze towards a ‘sponsor’ who he had purchased her for.

Ren.

At the sight of him her shoulders slumped, her jaw quivered, and a sudden feeling of relief caused the edges of her vision to waver as tears threatened to form. Like when she had gotten into trouble as a child Ren had appeared to help her. Wordlessly, she accepted the arm that the red headed man offered her, and allowed him to guide her through the crowd, her eyes frozen on Ren.

“Do you two know each other? He seems awfully flustered to see you." The man asked as they approached. In the back of her mouth, Slyph could taste something bitter. She drew in a breath, sharp and harsh as she finally looked away from Ren and to the red headed man.

“Yes, I know him well.” Slyph said, her weightless relief turning cold in the pit of her stomach. Her words escaped her lips before she placed proper thought behind them, before her mind had an opportunity to fully catch up with the shifting emotions in her breast.

“He is the one who reduced my home to cinder and char.”

There she was, she looked as beautiful as the last time he saw her. He felt relieved for the first time since he learned of the attack on her village. Ren could tell she recognized him as her eyes widened but this soon turned into a harsh look.

The man smiled as she replied to his question, but before he could respond a more dramatic and angry tone came from her. The man grew silent and realized what was happening, this was going to be very awkward for him. He guided her the rest of the way in silence.

As they came closer the man let go of Slyph's arm and Ren approached. "Slyph..." Ren began trying to cool things down. "I'm sorry, if I knew it would come to this I would have never started that war." He said honestly, that war was easily his biggest mistake, he was tricked into beginning the largest conflict in recent history just for vengeance.

Purchased by the same childhood friend who had destroyed her nation. There was a certain impossible ridiculousness to it all and she wasn't positive about what it was that she found the hardest to accept. That Ren had bought her, at the last moment no less, that today wasn't some strange dream back in the cramped holding cell on the bed of straw. She shifted uneasily in place as Ren apologized for his part in the war, for his portion of the blame in her capture, intended or not. She remained silent for a long moment, the edges of her vision wavering, the edges softening.

Her gaze shifted away, blue eyes sliding across the crowd. Onlookers curious to see the mystery third buyer who had paid so much. For a moment, she caught a glimpse of the man in the white robe staring. Gray eyes wide, cutting. Then the crowd shifted, and the man vanished from view. Her shoulders slumped and her brow knit for a moment before she finally looked back to Ren. She drew in a long breath, before dipping forward in a short bow.

“I thank you for…” she paused, searching for a word as she straightened, “saving me from a worse fate.” She finished stiffly, leaving his apology hanging. She cast a glance back towards the stage and shifted in place uneasily once again.

“Perhaps we can talk elsewhere?” She asked.

Ren only nodded and looked at the slave rags she wore. He unbuttoned his jacket and placed it on her shoulders to help cover her. The man with the red hair who had been standing besides them quietly, it was rather awkward for him but he understood. "Sir pherhaps we could discuss the price of my services another time?" He offered Ren looked over and gestured to the coin purse. "You can keep what's left of that." Ren offered but the man shook his head and tossed it back. "I may require you two for another reason, it's nothing dangerous or harmful. Where will you two be staying?" Ren looked down to Slyph and began to worry about what he wanted. He exhaled and looked back up to him. "The noble's lodge." He replied. "Excellent I shall swing by tomorrow to discuss our agreement! Good day to you two." He said before giving a short bow and walking off. Ren turned back to Slyph and tenderly held her shoulder. "Why do I have a feeling I won't like this?" He said with a sigh. He began to walk away with Slyph by his side. "No matter, maybe we should find some better clothes for you, something more comfortable?" He offered as he wrapped his arm around her.

With her left hand Slyph clutched the jacket which Ren had rested on her shoulders closed. It wasn't the best, but she was grateful all the same for the additional modesty that the rage she wore did not offer. She watched the redheaded man as he slipped away back into the crowd. What was it that the man desired from them? She too released a low sigh, it was a worrisome idea knowing she owed the man something, but there was little else to do but wait until he appeared once more to give his price.

“There is no sense worrying about what he will ask, we cannot change it.” She said, starting to walk as Ren guided her along. She nodded lightly as he looped an arm across her thin shoulders and offered to purchase new clothing.

“I would appreciate getting out of these rags and into something much more pleasant.” Slyph said, looking down at her rough clothing. “And, perhaps a meal if it isn't too much trouble.”
