[1x1] Rite of Passage

Post by DMLyJa » Wed Feb 06, 2019 8:58 pm

Anniyah woke to the first morning of the rest of her life, the sun cascading through the open window in her room. She laid there for a few moments before yanking the blanket over head to try and go back to sleep. She knew that this Rite of Passage was very important to her parents and the community, that every child would have to do it at some point, but secretly she thought it was foolish. Many had returned, but there were still some that hadn’t and the youth always decided that they had to have not survived, rumors spreading of what could have caused their demise.

With a groan, she threw the blanket off of her before staring at the ceiling, the smell of her Mother making bacon and eggs seemed to fill the small home. With having no other siblings, she knew her Mother was taking her trial harder than most, she was the pride and joy of her families center. Her parents never let her forget it either. Wanting the best for her was one thing but it has all gotten out of hand, words of an arranged marriage upon her return had been spoken in hushed tones between her parents and the parents of Oren Wright, though no one ever asked her what she wanted.

Rising up from the bed made from hay, she fixed her blankets perfectly before moving over to the small bowl and pitcher, pouring a bit of room temperature water into the bowl, her other hand grabbing a clean rag before drenching it within the belly of the bowl. She wrung out the excess before she cleaned her face. She didn’t want to marry Oren, in her heart this was very true. He had been a bully as she grew up and she already had her fair share of confrontations and scuffles with him. He was a disgusting male who never maintained himself and would be returning soon from his trial.

As she closed her eyes and set the rag within the bowl as she leaned against the table, a few strands of her chocolate hair falling out of place. She knew her father wanted to have the family at a higher status in the community, but why couldn’t they simply just be who they were, why did all of this have to be status related? You leave and return, your status is survivor and strong. You leave and don’t return, your status is weak and unneeded.

A sigh escaped her before she pushed back the strands of hair and turned to the attire her Mother had set out for the night prior. They mimicked the clothes she wore everyday, with the exception that the colors were crisp and bright, having been recently made from new materials, this would have cost her Mother more than her parents could afford and she knew it, but there was no sense in arguing with her once the sale had been completed.

Getting dressed was an easy feat for her and as she moved to stand in front of the mirror, her visage appearing to represent the higher status her Father longed for. She scowled a moment though a look of appreciation crossed her face as she picked up the simple brush and worked the tangles from her long locks and once done, she began to braid her hair into one long braid, tied at the end with a leather strap.

She strapped on the belt with the sheath for her dagger, the well used but sharpened ornate dagger coming to fall into place with a snug fit. Her arms gathered up her prepacked satchel before leaving her room to join her parents at the meal table. As she walked out her Mother was silently sobbing by the fire as she flipped over the bacon, her Father having already left to join the crowd. Her Mother turned to her before embracing her tightly, with a saddened smile she hugged her mother back. They didn’t speak now, for all they had to say was said the night before. Instead she gathered some bacon into a cloth with bread and a few oranges before placing them in Anniyah’s hands.

With a gentle nod, she took them and placed them into her pack before she offered a soft wave, her form moving to the front door as her Mother returns the wave and sniffled as she held back a sob. Anniyah walked from the home down the dirt path towards the front entrance, everyone around her seeming to be celebrating, it appeared so much like their town festivals at harvest time. Shaking her head, she kept her gaze low to avoid the townsfolk from wanting to approach her.

Nearing the gate, she raised her eyes to the large wooden doors that would soon open up to her fate. She remembered someone saying someone else would be departing with her and she could only pray that it would be someone she had gotten along with, perhaps they could team up and help each other survive. Otherwise, she wouldn’t just be watching her back against the threats already out there, but perhaps she may have to look out for her companion.

The birds were already singing when Magnus woke up, something he didn't hear too often since he often woke when the cock crowed. Opening his eyes slightly, he was temporarily blinded by the sun shining in through the thin, moth eaten curtains that lined the small window into his room. Sitting up to avoid the light, he yawned and stretched out wide, groaning as he shook the fatigue from his muscles. Throwing back the covers, Magnus made his way over to the water basin at the side of his room and gave himself a quick wash and shave with his dagger, making sure he washed away whatever dirt was left from working in the field yesterday. His mother must be cooking, the smell of pork filling the house. Rubbing the back of his neck, he threw on his clothes and made sure his sword and dagger were safely showed before he made sure he had everything.

'Clothes...supplies...books...' he thought to himself, nodding in satisfaction that everything was there. Securing his rucksack again, he threw it over his shoulder to make his way into the shared den. His mother was to his left, frying up some bacon from the pig they slaughtered a few days ago. Setting his bag down against the wall, Magnus made his way over to the dining room table and plopped himself down on it "Mornin' Mam"

"Good morning son, sleep well?" Olette replied, tearing herself away from the stove for a moment to pour him a glass of fresh apple juice, no doubt bought just for today. After checking both sides of the bacon, she lifted several pieces onto two plates with two slices of crusty bread on them and set them down in front of the two of them

"Thanks. Ehh, took me a while to get over so the lie in was appreciated. Guess the excitement got to me" he replied, before lifting his knife and fork and tucking into his breakfast alongside his mother, stopping only to reply and to sip his juice

"I remember being your age. Setting off, getting to see the world..." His mother replied, seeming to drift off into one of her daydreams "I understand all to well. Seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree"

"I'm sure my tutors would agree with you on that last part" Magnus joked "Anything you think I should head for or make sure I get a chance to see?"

"No. I think the Rite of Passage is best experienced by wandering aimlessly. You'll soon find out what you want to do" she replied, before getting up to clear the table and wash the dishes "Now I think I've kept you long enough letting you sleep in, the elder will have my head if I keep you much longer"

Magnus nodded in agreement, rising from the table to make his way over to help his mum, but she raised a hand to signal that he was fine today. Nodding, he made his way over to his rucksack and threw it over his shoulder, saying goodbye to his mother and giving her a kiss on the cheek, promising to be safe. As he made his way towards the door, she spoke up.

"I also prepared you a little going away present, check the table" Olette said, turning to watch him leave while drying her hands on a tea towel. "And don't you be worrying about the farm, little Charles has agreed to help out when possible. Your old mum will be fine. Checking the table, he found some dried pork she had dried and salted herself, and Magnus couldn't help but smile. With a nod and a wave, they parted ways, Magnus cutting across the fields as he made his way towards town. While he wasn't usually nervous, he could feel his heart pace quicken in his chest, and he was filled with the urge to run to get out into the wide world. The furthest he had went was into the nearby forest to retrieve one of their ponies who had bolted, but he had heard tales of sparkling oceans, mountains that rose from the earth and split the heavens and even a city to the east that was built entirely out of gold. As he got near, the gates, they opened up to let him in where he was welcomed by the crowd. Heading into mingle, he spoke to a few friends, joking with them before hugging each of them in turn. He was also approached by some well wishers who gifted him some tools, food and treats, even a Fairy Rose from one of the older women from the village, one flower which only grew in their forest. When the elder made his way in front of the gate to see them on their way, Magnus wrapped up his goodbyes before making his way towards him.

Anniyah stared around at the crowd, her fear beginning to surface as the moment drew near. Folks were trying to get her attention and she couldn’t muster up the strength to move her feet, each one feeling like a boulder holding her to the ground. Her Father noticed all of this and gathered a few gifts from the crowd whom was now congratulating him for having a daughter about to enter the world. The whole affair seemed rather morbid at this moment, so she diverted her eyes from the crowd and tried to gather herself back up again. The cheers from the crowd to her left then filled her ears and distracted her enough to look for the source of the cheering. And there he was…the man that would accompany her on this journey, in the beginning at least.

They had been in class together, him always the one with the answers and her the silent one that never volunteered any. She had stared at his silver hair for years but never found the courage to really go out of her way to speak to him, with the exceptions of cordial greetings. She straightened her back as he came forth through the crowd, her eyes quickly diverting from him to the ground. Her Father took seize of her arm and spun her around quickly, his lips moving close to her ear as he whispered something. His hands then opened her bag and shoved a few more things into her satchel, his lips then kissing her cheek before he looks into her eyes one last time. Turning his back to her, he then blended back into the cheering crowd.

Shaking her head a bit she then turned her focus to the Elder at the gates, her lip being bit as she trembled in place. Magnus seemed so calm, excited even and this made her feel even more obsolete. She moved over towards Magnus, her back straightened as she tried to put up the mirage of confidence and pride. A soft smile was offered to him as she extended her hand for a shake, a few tendrils of hair falling out of place. “Good luck out there…” Her voice was soft and quiet compared to the crowd and she didn’t know if he would even hear her. If he was to take her hand he would notice the underlying tremble that seemed to pulse steady through out her.

The Elder begins the ceremony with a long length speech about the history of the Rite of Passage, moving about the two as he casts an ancestral blessing on them both. The crowd is silent at this point, watching as it all occurs with a hypnotized gaze. Each of them having gone through everything they were about too, some wishing that they too could experience this all again, others appearing terrified for what was to come. He finished the ceremony by lighting two torches and moved to stand before each of them, placing a torch in one of their hands. The wooden gates would then begin to open with loud creaking and grinding of the aged wood and gears.

Before the elder began his speech and blessings, Magnus was approached by a girl he had seen several times when he came into town. While they hadn't spoken at all, since his group of friends more or less kept to themselves, he took her warmly by the hand and gave her a wide assuring grin and wink. "Thanks, you too!" He said, before turning to pay attention to the elder. The words and the blessings were etched into his mind, having watched his friends leave one by one, Magnus had memorized every step, and when he was given the torch, he felt empowered and giddy with excitement. He waited for the girl to move forward first before matching her pace until they were both outside the village. Turning around, Magnus the torch in the ceremonial sconces and then waving goodbye to those he knew one last time as the gates slowly closed. The moment the door closed, he couldn't help contain his excitement and threw his fist into the air with a loud cheer, which he was sure would be heard by those inside the town, yet he couldn't care less. He was free now. Free to explore, free of farmwork and responsibility.

Immediately he ran down the path a little before throwing his bag against an old tree stump, pulling out a map he had bought from a traveller only a week ago specifically for this day. The map wasn't complete, it showed him the local area all the way down to somewhere called the Kingdom of Equeus, which would only be 3 or 4 days travel from the village. Plotting out a path, he found the best way to get there would be through the forest and then along the main road that led there. Identifying the path, he was about to go when he saw the other girl simply standing there, looking confused and lost. Magnus could see she was nowhere near as excited to see the world as him, perhaps hoping to stay at the village and was forced out into the world. Leaving the map where it was, he snuck up onto her as she stared at the village wall.

"Hello, sorry to bother you. I'm Magnus" he said, holding out his hand for a more formal introduction "Have any plans on what you are gonna do? You can use my map if you are struggling"

Indeed once the gates opened she began to run out, they were all trained to do just that over the years and it was instinct that led her at this point. Once the environment around her changed drastically, she came to a stop and turned back to look at the gate doors closing shut. She was able to see her Fathers image one last time before the thumping of the doors becoming locked again and the shout from her fellow companion caused her to tense. Still, she didn’t look around, her eyes stuck on the doors as she trembles a bit more. She couldn’t understand what the point of all of this was if she was simply to be married off. Was this going to make it easier for her? How did they even know if Oren will survive, let alone herself.

It wasn’t until Magnus had snuck upon her, his voice and presence bringing her back to the present and causing her to jump with a turn, her arms drawn in towards her and causing her to drop her bags, bow and quiver to the ground, arrows scattering around their feet. Her bright green eyes were wide as she stared into his light blue ones before she took him into a full look-over, pausing at the extended hand towards her. His words then filled her ears and her eyes returned back towards his own, the uncertainty still written all over her face. “Aye…I know who you are….Magnus. Everyone knows you…”

She then extended a hand to lay in his gently as she offers a faint nod, her hand still trembling, worse than before. She swallowed dryly before she found the words that seemed to flit away from her mind briefly. “I am…Anniyah…” She shook her head a bit before she ran her free hand up to brush the few strands of hair from her face. She would then bend down, taking her hand from his in order to collect the arrows and begin to place them back in their quiver. “…Everyone calls me Ann though…I suppose its too hard to say…”

The sounds of nature seemed to be growing louder around her as the reality of the situation began to rise to her senses. A part of her had truly thought her Father would stop this, even if made her family a pariah to the village but at least, she wouldn’t be chancing death. Her eyes would rise up to him as she gathered the quiver and bow up and then glanced to his map sitting nearby. “Your not…worried…about any of this are you? Does none of this bother you at all? Seem odd?”

Her eyes return back to him as she looked inquisitively at his features, her pack still upside down on the ground. She had only watched him from a distance and now she stood in front of him, his eyes fully focused on her now and this caused her to grow a bit more nervous than before. She was never good at interacting with the opposite sex, finding herself the victim to the bullying nature they had and never had an ally that was male. She even had a strained relationship with her Father growing up.

When she finally took his hand, He could feel her trembling like a leaf, confirming the fact that she was terrified at the thought if being let loose into the outside world. While he didn't give it much thought, having trained and planned for this day for much of the last two or three years, the idea of heading out into the world for others who maybe weren't as confident or as prepared must have hit hard at home. Still, wasn't this what the Rite of Passage was for? To build their confidence and skills for their life to come when they finally did decide to settle down. Her comment about 'everyone knows you felt oddly cold, almost as if she was angry at him, or resentful towards him. Magnus picked his brain trying to think of what he may have done against her, but he was fairly sure this was their first meaningful conversation.

He took a moment while she spoke to look her up and down. She wasn't unpleasant to look at, in fact she was quite pretty, with long brown hair and a lithe body in contrast to his stocky build. She would have been one of the prettier girls in the village, and yet he hadn't seen her interacting as much with the other kids around their age. At her comment of this all feeling abit odd, Magnus cocked his head, folding his arms behind his head and resting against them, giving it some thought before replying. "Odd? No...it's tradition. It's smart. You can't know what you want your life to be like at our age, so like our ancestors we are given the chance to see the world beyond our small borders"

"Who knows what some of the others have achieved who haven't returned. Great heroes? Explorers? Royal advisors? All is possible" Magnus continued, seeming to stare off into the distance as he spoke on "And if not, we can discover where we belong. If it's elsewhere, great. If not, we can being back our skills we gather on the way" With that said, Magnus seemed to return to earth, shaking his head and focusing in on Anniyah once more, giving a chuckle followed by a wide grin "I mean that has to make sense right? If not we have wasted countless centuries on this"

As Magnus spoke, it became obvious by his stance and position that he was deep in thought and she took this moment to pick her satchel up and then gather the remaining the items that had spilled forth, most of it being the small gifts that her Father shoved in her bag and a few medical supplies, gauze, bandages, several jars of salves. She would peer up at him from her crouched stance, watching him as he continued to speak aloud, her cheeks growing rosy as she paid more attention to his form than his words.

Rising up, she wrapped the strap over her shoulder and then a separate belt around her waist to hold her satchel tightly to the side of her form. She then took the quiver strap and laced it diagonally over her front, a hand reaching back to brush her fingers over the feathered ends of her arrows, noting that she had perfect reach for them. Her eyes had focused on his face, her cheeks still rosy as he looks back to her and grins, his question resonated in her mind for a moment before she moves past him towards the map.

“That may be the advantage you have….But some fates are sealed….and thus, this trial is fruitless….” She would lean her bow against a tree before she looked intently to the map. She noted it wasn’t completed but her finger was placed to where it would seem they were at and began to trace her finger along several different paths before placing her finger back to where they were again. “And those who never returned….I highly doubt that its because they found riches and fame…Heroes please…” She shook her head at the concept before she raises her eyes back towards him, a slightly apologetic look crossing her face. “My apologies…I shouldn’t be so quick to wipe away hopes and dreams…I am sure that you will find…whatever it is you are looking for. You certainly look like you can do it all…alone…”

She would then look back to the map, her bottom lip coming to be bit as she restrained herself from speaking more possibly negative things, her eyes focused on the map at hand, her finger continues to lead towards an unfinished part of the map. Raising up, she looks around the woods and the paths forged through the trees, almost as if she was looking for something in particular, her lip being released from the bite. Brushing back the few tendrils, she focused again on Magnus, her eyes taking him in before a resolved sigh escaped her, preparing herself for the negative answer from him. “You wouldn’t want an escort with you…would you?”

"Ohh don't worry, you aren't ruining my hopes and dreams. I've waited a long time for this day, and I doubt anything would be able to bring me down!" Magnus replied cheerfully, heading over to his pack and map "Nothing is certain in this world. We are our own people, And the paths we take are our own. You just have to find yours"

Making sure everything was in its proper place, Magnus tightened the straps around his bedroll to make sure it wouldn't slip as he threw it over his shoulder, before turning to retrieve his map from the stump. He saw that Anniyah was standing next to it, tracing her finger along the paths that stretched out to the forest. He moved up alongside her, looking down at the piece of cloth while her fingertips danced across the lines and markings, turning to look at her while she stumbled over her question. How very formal, asking if he would like an escort with him. His amusement spread onto his face, with his lips curling up in to an amused smile "You're more than welcome to join me if you'd like, I'm only travelling to Gehsit, it's only a few days away. From there, I will go where the road takes me I suppose"

Picking up his map, he folded it neatly before stuffing it into his the rear of his belt. Raising himself upright, he extended his hand out towards her. "But I have to say...you're really gonna need to lighten up abit, let loose and stop me trying to bring me down. Do we have a deal Ann?"

She took in his enjoyment and amusement, as it was written in every expression and action he made, it almost bewildered her as to how someone could be so content with the circumstances. She shook her head as she smiled for the first time, seeming to dispel the doubt that had plagued her before. She took a step towards him before she offers him a nod in agreement, her hand placing itself within his, the trembling having subsided greatly.

She couldn’t help but trust him at this point and he did seem to have confidence coming out of every pore. She straightened her back as she glanced at the gate doors one last time before gathering up her bow and nodding to herself. Something about his words seemed to click an idea in her head, one that she would be mulling over continuously now, trying to find a way for it settle fine in her conscience. But that will come in time, for now, it was a thought and a chance at freedom from her doomed arranged marriage upon her return.

“I will certainly do my best Magnus…Shall we begin our travels?” Her eyes turn to look at the pieces of the sky she could see through the trees before looking back towards him. “Will you tell me more about Geh-sit…?” She tried to pronounce the name of their destination but with it being a foreign word to her lips, it came out in a stumbled fashion. She then walked up towards the path she believed would begin their venture together.

With their agreement in place, Magnus adjusted his belt and joined her along the path towards the forest. The dry soil crunched below their feet with every step, before giving way to soft grass the closer they got to the treeline. Keeping one hand on his sword hilt as he went to keep it in place, he began to chat to Anniyah "Well I don't really know what to tell you, I haven't been there myself of course. The traveller said it was one of the great capitals of the world, the hub between all other towns and cities" Magnus explained as best he could, relying the information he had been told "He described to me great white spires rising up from a flat plain, with ziplines between them where trams run between them for people to get around quickly"

"I guess we will find out soon enough thought. I think he said it was a two days walk away if we cut through the forest" he finished, stopping briefly by the treeline to turn around and look at at the village one last time. In the distance he could see his home on their small plot of land, the cows grazing in the fields. Giving a silent farewell to his old life, he turned to follow Anniyah. The air was cooler when they were under the leafy canopy above, enough light streaming in through the leaves to light the path in front of them, that weaved in and out of the trees. Flowers grew along the path, and before long they had crossed a stream

"I think I saw you when I came in to meet up with my friends you know, but I'd like to know more about my travelling partner" Magnus said, turning to look at Anniyah as they made their way along "What was your life like back home?"
