Name: Charlotte Ainsley

Age: 18

Gender: Female.

Personality:

Some call her haughty. Some call her self-centered. Some may even call her a total selfish bitch. They're all right, in a sense. Charlotte Ainsley, daughter of wealthy investor Benedict Ainsley and sole heiress to the Ainsley Hedge Fund, has the sort of air about her of knowing exactly what she wants, and waiting it to be handed to her on a silver platter. While she isn't outright demanding in the traditional sense, her way of asking for things leaves little room for others to say no. She's the sort to hold favors above people's heads indefinitely, ask for things already expected to be given, and believes herself the most suitable for any position of prestige that may arise, be it authority, contest, title, or otherwise. As such, she has a highly inflated opinion of her own competence, and seems consistently surprised when her own abilities fall short of others' (and her own) lofty expectations.

She can be quite precocious, when her stark idealism doesn't get in the way. Years of private tutors and drive from a highly successful family have given her an upper leg in the academic world. Still, that's only in academia; when it comes to actual applications of the things she's read in books, she tends to fail miserably, be it a matter of over-confidence or an underlying anxiety that she really isn't nearly as skilled as she lets on. Perhaps the biggest example of this is social relationships. Despite her looks and heritage, she's always remained a hand apart from her peers, a cause of both isolation due to status and a complete and utter lack of social skills whatsoever. She may seem composed, but she has no idea when to say what, how to relate, and what the whole "friend" thing is about anyway. She's had "friends," but never anything real, however much she tries to pretend it. Always either sycophants feeding up to her for a chance at her good graces or other high society pretenders looking to make pointless connections. Even though she surrounds herself with people, she's always felt alone.

Character History:

Charlotte wasn't special. She was wealthy, certainly, but not special. She had no powerful talents, heroic legacies, or grand prophecies to fulfill. She wasn't the chosen anything, and no strange events foretold her birth. No, she was a relatively normal little girl, with relatively normal interests and a relatively normal lot in life. Her family would have you think differently, of course. Since she was old enough to understand words, it seemed everyone around her had expectations much higher than she could ever hope to achieve. She was shunted from tutor to tutor, instilled that duty and diligence came before personal freedom, and that one had, first and foremost, and obligation to do their family name proud. Her days were filled with learning, her nights filled with studying, and in all that she never found much a chance to actually be a child. One could say she grew up early, though that implies maturity came early as well. Though certainly a studious worker, maturity isn't really a word that easily describes her. The same environment that fostered her sense of diligence also instilled a large degree of superiority. She had to prove herself the best because she was born to the best, and in the world of appearances, status meant everything. She was an Ainsley through and through, one of the financial powerhouses that drove the economy, and the rest of the world owed her respect for it whether she deserved it or not.

She never really thought she did.

Even when she was younger, and thought the world outside worked like how her parents did, she still didn't understand why respect was obligatory. She came to expect it, of course, but deep down, she questioned whether or not she was really worthy of anything. She was little more than a dust mote in the shadow of her father's successes. What did she have to claim for herself? A name? A pretty face? With every year that passed, every little second she failed to live up to her parents' expectations, she clamped down on herself a little tighter. Piano lessons, age eight. She played until her fingers couldn't move and still they wanted more. Trivia contest, age ten. Second place among hundreds of other competitors, but still they asked why she didn't make first. Respect she expected. Praise she never did. Though she still maintained on the surface that she was better, a root of doubt grew deeper and deeper into her heart. She found herself having trouble performing tasks under pressure. If someone was there to watch her, critique her, she seized up, forgetting everything she'd meticulously memorized the months before. Her performance in extracurriculars suffered, and her schoolwork did as well.

Excalibur Academia was a final chance to prove herself, to show she was worth something. Tutors fired and a homebound life pulled out from underneath her feet, Charlotte made her first few steps into the real world, beyond the scope of her family's wing.
