Welcome to the Grey City. There is no trace of color anywhere. The buildings are grey, the streets are grey, life is grey, even the river surrounding two sides of the city is grey. It has been this way for 60 years. Most people have grown up not knowing what 'color' is. Not knowing any other way, they follow the Leaders without question. However, there have been rumors of a rising rebellion...
History of the Grey City
The Grey City used to be a cheerful place full of color, back before it was the Grey City. It did once have another name, but it is not one taught in school, so not many people remember it.
By the year 2043, an organisation simply known as the Grey had infiltrated the top levels of the city's government. This group, led by 5 individuals, had spent 10 years on planning, to make sure it went off without a hitch. On May 25, they began a violent take over that took no longer than two weeks. During this time, hundreds of officials and other people were slaughtered, as the Grey couldn't have anyone who would oppose their views.
The Citizens quickly fell into the new way of life, knowing that if they tried to oppose, they would be executed. However, in 2063, a group of Citizens, calling themselves the Colorless Rebellion, attempted to overthrow the Leaders. Hundreds of lives were lost, and the Leaders won.
After this, some individuals and smaller groups of Citizens tried to get rid of the Leaders. One example is the assassination of '73, when a 16 year old from Faction 3E stabbed Maureen Waite's brother to death.
In 2088, a man revived the Colorless Rebellion, shortening the name to simply the Rebellion. This man died in 2100, and many believe the Rebellion died with him.
Despite it's short existence, the labs of the Grey City have had many breakthroughs. These include the Skin Cel Modifier, which turns a Citizens skin grey at birth and was first tested in 2045. There are rumors that the labs in Faction 1A have found a way to prolong life indefinitely. There have also been rumors of a new technology in development. This technology would be able to pick and choose the traits and characteristics of a Citizen before it is born. With this technology, the Leaders would be able to create Citizens that are designed specifically for certain Factions.

2103 - Current Day
After the Grey took control, they split the city into three distinct Classes.
This Class is where the leaders live. This is the "nicest" part of town, and the richest. Most business that goes on here is kept secret from the Citizens. Other than the leaders, the only people who live here are the Grey Army.
This Class is where those that would have once been called "middle class" live. This Class is where the money making businesses are, and where Citizens can live comfortably as long as they work.
This Class is the poorest part of the town. It is here where the jobs that involve menial labor are. In this class, no matter how much a Citizen works, they cannot live comfortably. There is a higher rate of crime, homelessness and disease here, compared to the other Classes. In fact, it is only in Class 3 that there is homelessness, and it is only Citizens from Class 3 that tend to commit crimes such as theft and assault.
In addition to the Classes, the Grey City has further been split into Sets. There are five sets, each with their own purpose.
This Set's purpose is medicine. It consists of hospitals, GPs, and medical research labs. Set A is the richest of the Sets.
This Set's purpose is retail. It consists of product manufacturing plants, supermarkets, and shops.
This Set's purpose is academia. It consists of school supply plants and the schools.
This Set's purpose is farming and food production. It consists of farms and food production centers.
This Set's purpose is manufacturing. It consists of physical labor factories and offices. Set E is the poorest of the Sets.
Each individual area designated by a Class and a Set is called a Faction. There are 15 factions in total.
Class 1 Set A (Faction 1A)
This is where the main Leader and his family - the Reade's - live and rule from. It is the richest part of town. This Faction hides a secret research lab which conducts experiments using failed students as humans guinea pigs. No Citizens are allowed to go here.
Class 1 Set B (Faction 1B)
This is where the Mercia's - the Leader of Set B and her family - live. This Faction is the only one to not have any hidden secrets and is open to anyone and everyone, as the Leader of Set B provides clothes and other items for Class 3 Citizens that are struggling.
Class 1 Set C (Faction 1C)
This is where the Waite's - the Leader of Set C and her family - live. This Faction hides a surveillance building which the Leaders use to keep track of the Citizens. The only Citizens allowed to enter here are the Citizens of Faction 2C.
Class 1 Set D (Faction 1D)
This is where the Reyes' - the Leader of Set D and his family - live. This Faction hides a large supply of foods that have been banned. Access to this Faction for Citizens is invitation only.
Class 1 Set E (Faction 1E)
This is where the Spink's - the Leader of Set E and his family - live. This Faction hides the items that were banned when the Grey took over. Access to this Faction for Citizens is invitation only.
Class 2 Set A (Faction 2A)
This Faction contains medical research labs. The Citizens that live and work here are scientists. They are generally calm and have an analytical approach to things.
Class 2 Set B (Faction 2B)
This Faction contains shops and supermarkets. The Citizens that live and work here are shop assistants, store managers, etcetera. They generally have great people skills and are very friendly.
Class 2 Set C (Faction 2C)
This Faction contains the schools and the main train station. Citizens that live and work here are the teachers, the head teachers, etcetera. They are usually smart and good leaders.
Class 2 Set D (Faction 2D)
This Faction contains the food production centers that create the tons of grey slush that the Citizens eat. The Citizens that work here are engineers, to keep the machines running. They are generally quiet, but good at teamwork.
Class 2 Set E (Faction 2E)
This Faction contains offices that do boring office stuff. The Citizens that live and work here are office workers. They are generally boring people.
Class 3 Set A (Faction 3A)
This Faction contains hospitals and doctors' offices. The Citizens who live and work here are doctor and nurses. They are generally smart and friendly.
Class 3 Set B (Faction 3B)
This Faction contains the manufacturing plants that create the items sold in Faction 2B. The Citizens who live and work here are engineers, to keep the machines running. They are generally social and good at teamwork.
Class 3 Set C (Faction 3C)
This Faction contains the manufacturing plants that create the equipment and supplies used in the schools in Faction 2C. The Citizens that live and work here are engineers, to keep the machines running. They are generally sociable and friendly.
Class 3 Set D (Faction 3D)
This Faction contains farms that supply the food to the food production plants in 2D. The Citizens that live and work here are farmers. They are generally friendly and have good organizational skills.
Class 3 Set E (Faction 3E)
This is the poorest Faction. This Faction contains manual labor factories that provide the majority of the things needed by the City. The Citizens that live and work here are factory workers. They are generally a mix of different personalities.
The Education System
In the Grey City, there are two School Stages, School Stage 1 and School Stage 2. All Students from all Factions attend the same school.
School Stage 1
This is where Students go between the ages of 5 and 13. Students are taught the basic things they need to know; maths, science, PE, etcetera. No art or music classes are taught, as both things were banned when the Grey took over. At the end of School Stage 1, all Students must undertake the Test, which determined which Faction they will live and work in after they leave School Stage 2. The few Students from Class 1 pick on the Students from Class 2, who in turn pick on the Students from Class 3.
School Stage 2
This is where Students go between the ages of 14 and 18. Here, the results of the Test determine what the Students do. Students from Class 1 can choose what they do. There are 11 separate , each one teaching the Students the specifics of their destined Faction. Just like in School Stage 1, the Students from Class 1 pick on Students from Class 2, who in turn pick on Students from Class 3. In addition, the Students destined for the richer Sets pick in the Students destined for the poorer Sets.
The Faction Designation Test, shortened simply to the Test, is what most Students must partake in at the end of School Stage 1. Failure to do so results in an automatic fail. Students from Class 1 do not have to take the test. The results of the Test determine what Set a Student is destined for, as well as whether they are destined for Class 2 or Class 3. The only Students that are destined for Class 1 are the failed Student and the best Students. Failed Students are taken to the secret research lab in Faction 1A to be used as human guinea pigs in experiments. The best Students stay in the Set they were born in, but are destined to go to Class 1 to join the Grey Army.
Monorail is a common sight in 2103, not just in the Grey City, but across the globe. This is due to the rapid decrease in Earth's natural resources, which meant fossil fuels became harder and harder to find, until there was so little, cars and other forms of transport could no longer be used. The common rail travels between all Factions of Class 2 and Class 3, but does not go to Class 1. Aboard the train, the Classes are kept separate to avoid interaction. The Class 2 carriages have cushioned seats and carpeted floors. The Class 3 carriages have hard seats and bare floors. The central station is in Faction 2C.
There is a train that only travels between Class 2 and Class 1. It is stored under the train station in Faction 1C when not in use, and is only used when the Leaders visit Class 2 and/or Class 3, or when Students move to Class 1. This train has extremely comfy cushioned chairs and curtains on the windows.
There are mini-pods that travel only between Faction 2C and the Class 1 Factions. These are used when Students from Class 1 are travelling to or returning from school. They are also used when Citizens are invited to Faction 1D or Faction 1E, when Set C Citizens are travelling to Faction 1C, and when Citizens are travelling to Faction 1B. They have cushioned seats and bare floors.
Citizen Communication Devices
Citizen Communication Devices (or CCDs) allow Citizens to communicate with each other over long distances. All CCDs use holograms, and they have two main features. One of the features is simply just audio. The hologram shows the sound waves, but the Citizen only hears the other Citizen. The other feature is face to face. The Citizens can see each other whilst talking. Class 1 CCDs have a third feature. The Citizen only sees the soundwave whilst the member of Class 1 can see the Citizen. In Class 3, each household has at least one CCD; personal CCDs in Class 3 are a rare sight. In Class 2 and Class 1, every Citizen has a personal CCD.
Drones are not often seen in the Grey City. This is due to the cloaking devices they are fitted with. They are actually everywhere in Class 3, and a common thing in Class 2 as well. There are very few drones in Class 1, and the ones there are for security rather than surveillance.
Cameras are seen everywhere in the Grey City. Like with drones, camera are everywhere in Class 3, common in Class 2 and very few in Class 1.
Holograms are more common in Class 1 and Class 2 than they are in Class 3. They are used for City-wide announcement, as well as the main means of communication between the Factions.
A.I pretty much runs Class 1 and Class 2. The only place it is found in Class 3 is in the train stations. The monorail is run by A.I. Faction 1C are working on living versions of A.I. (robots), but it is not going as well as they would have liked.
Skin Cel Modifier
This technology was developed to turn the Citizens skin grey. It affects different Citizens differently, meaning there is a range of shades of grey skin. All Citizens have to have this done at birth, but Class 1 do not have to have it done. The secret lab in Faction 1A has been working on genetic modification which would eliminate the need for the technology, but so far there has been no success. The scientist who wrote the patent was unable to spell properly, so wrote 'Cel' on the patent rather than 'Cell', and the name stuck.
Clothing, Food and Housing
Clothing in the Grey City has stayed the same for the past hundred years, from before it became the Grey City. The only difference is the lack of jeans, and the grey color. Class 3 Citizens do not wear dresses or suits. In Class 2, skirt suits are a common sight among women, and men tend to wear untailored suits. Floor length dresses are a common choice for the women of Class 1, and tailored suits are what the men of Class 1 prefer to wear. The Grey Army wear grey tactical gear.
All Citizens eat the same grey slush. It is made by blending various genetically modified fruits and vegetables, grown in the farms in Faction 3D, together, and then mixing it with various chemicals and liquids. The resultant product is a grey "slush" that has the same consistency as porridge. The grey slush is bland and tasteless, but has all the nutrients the Citizens require. The grey slush also comes in a solid bar form, for when Citizens are in a rush. The Leaders and their families have actual food, but the Students from Class 1 still have to eat the grey slush in school. The only drink the Citizens are allowed to drink is plain water. The Leaders and their families can drink coffee and tea if they want.
Class 1 Housing
The Leaders and their families, as well as the members of the Grey Army, live in luxurious mansions. The mansions run mainly on A.I. This includes the showers, cleaning bots, and elevators. The mansions are large enough that everyone gets their own rooms, with spare rooms left over.
Class 2 Housing
The Citizens of Class 2 live in nice houses and apartments. Families of four or more live in houses. The houses are decent size, with a good number of rooms. The showers are run by A.I. but everything else is done manually. Families of 3 or less live in the apartments. Again, the apartments are of decent size with an appropriate number of rooms, and the showers are run by A.I.
Class 3 Housing
The Citizens of Class 3 live in communal houses and apartments. The communal houses can hold up to 6 families of 3 or less. Families of 4 or more live in the apartments. The apartments are often too small as they only have two rooms. All Class 3 housing is completely void of A.I.
1. All color is banned. Only the greyscale is allowed.
2. All Citizens must wear the elected shade of grey. Citizens may wear black to funerals, and white to weddings. If this happens, the Citizen(s) in question must have proof of the event.
3. Class 1 (the Leaders and their families) may wear whatever shade of grey they wish, and may wear black and white at anytime.
4. Class 1 (apart from the Leaders) must not interact with Class 2 or Class 3 outside of school.
5. Lower Classes must not address/touch/interact with higher Classes unless addressed.
6. All Citizens must be in their designated Factions between the hours of 22:00 and 05:30.
7. All Citizens must carry their ID card (stating D/O/B, name, and Faction) at all times. In the case of a lost or damaged ID card, a new one can be purchased from Faction 2C. The ID card must also have the Citizens picture, which must be updated every two years whilst at school, and every five years whilst working.
8. Lower Classes must treat higher Classes with respect. Class 3 disrespecting Class 2 can result in imprisonment. Class 3 or Class 2 disrespecting Class 1 can result in death.
9. Higher Classes may treat lower Classes as they please.
10. Do not interfere with or resist the actions of the Grey Army.
11. Crimes such as a) disrespecting or attacking a member of the Grey Army, b) disrespecting or attacking a member of Class 1, and c) theft or murder can result in imprisonment or death.
13. All Citizens must know their place and act accordingly.
14. Do not ask or demand knowledge of higher Classes.
15. The Grey Army is the only authority allowed to use excessive force.
16. No helping, or attempting to help, lower Classes. Set B is excluded from this.
17. All art and music are banned.
18. The Leaders may retire at any age.
19. The youngest a Leader may become a Leader is 20 years or age.
20. The Leaders must be the same gender as the Grey that founded the Set. If no suitable child is born, the position of Leader goes to the oldest child.
The Citizens are those who live in Class 3 and Class 2. If a Citizen is younger than 18, they are classified as Students until they leave School Stage 2. Students have slightly different rules to older Citizens. Students destined for the Grey Army regularly go on excursions to Class 1 with older members of the Grey Army so that the Students can see where it is they will be living for the rest of their lives, and also see what exactly it is they will be doing. If the Students that visit Class 1 are heard to be talking about what they have seen, they are proclaimed liars, and executed for treason against the Leaders.
There is a major divide between the Citizens of Class 2 and Class 3. One of the main reasons for this is that there is actually a law stating "lower Classes must not address/touch/interact with higher Classes unless addressed". This means that Class 2 Citizens can get away with ignoring Class 3 students, and law abiding Class 3 Citizens cannot attempt to make the Class 2 Citizens talk to them.
Citizens are expected to basically shut up and do as they're told, and usually do. They follow the laws set out by the Leaders and believe that those who oppose the Leaders are stupid.
There are five Leaders of the Grey City. Each Leader is in charge of their own Set. The Leader of Set A has the most authority, and the Leader of Set E has the least authority.
The Leader of Set A is Callum Reade, grandson of Ellis Reade. He prefers to be called Cal. He is 36 and used to be known as a ladies man until his father literally whipped him into shape. Cal fancies London Mercia, but goes about it in a cocky way. He is "fit" but smart. He has to be the smartest person in the room, and often is. He takes after both his father and grandfather, and has a doctorate in research science. He does not value human life and will stop at nothing for a scientific breakthrough. He is harsh, cold, and cocky. He is the least liked of the leaders.
The Leader of Set B is London Mercia, granddaughter of Amelia Mercia. She hates Callum Reade, and believes he is a pompous, arrogant, frat boy. That last term she learned from her grandmother. London is the kindest and most well liked of the Leaders. She runs a service to help Class 3 Citizens who may be struggling with money. She leads a bit of a double life; she is a Leader, but she is also part of the Rebellion.
The Leader of Set C is Maureen Waite, daughter of Arthur Waite. She is the older of the current Leaders, being 53 years of age. Maureen has 2 sons, the eldest is 34, and a daughter. She is planning to retire in 4 years so that her eldest son can take over. She became Leader at the age of 23, after her brother was assassinated by a 16 year old from Faction 1E during a school meeting. She is very strict. If she was not a Leader, she would make the perfect headmistress of School Stage 2.
The Leader of Set D is Jacob Reyes, grandson of Alexander Reyes. He prioritised money over everything. He would be happy to sell his own mother just to get that little bit richer. He is fat, which is very rare in the Grey City, and is almost as arrogant as Callum Reade.
The Leader of Set E is Dean Spink, grandson of Brooke Spink. He is the youngest of the current Leaders, being 22 years of age. He has only been a Leader for 2 years. He has a younger sister who was due to take the position after their parents died. However, she is still a Student, and so is too young to become Leader. Dean is filling in for her until she is old enough. He is the sweetest of the Leaders, and would be the easiest to convince to join the Rebellion.
70 years ago, a group of people came together with a common interest: To get rid of democracy, color, and individuality. This group called themselves the Grey, and was led by five people; they were Ellis Reade, Amelia Mercia, Arthur Waite, Alexander Reyes, and Brooke Spink.
Ellis was the one in charge, due to him being the top medical researcher in the country, and having many assets and ties to high government officials. He, just like his grandson, had no regard for human life. He was ruthless, merciless, and the one that came up with the idea of the take over.
Next in command was Amelia Mercia. She grew up being looked down upon. No one in her family thought she could do anything because she was a girl. She made it her mission to prove them wrong, and did so by becoming the highest ranking woman in the police force. The 'mercy' in her last name was the only mercy she had; Amelia was the deadliest and most ruthless member of the Grey. Anyone who tried to fight Amelia during the take over most likely died. If they didn't, they certainly left with at least one less limb than they had before. She personally pulled the trigger to kill the head of the city's government. Amelia still knew business, however. Her father had wanted a son to inherit the family business, so taught her everything there was to know about retail oriented business.
Arthur Waite was the head of the school governors. He hated the children; he believed they were all too entitled and all that. He thought that music and the arts were a waste of time and resources. He did his best to get rid of all entertainment.
Alexander Reyes was the most prominent member of the food industry. Most of his products were only 5% actual food, but no one realised. Alexander was obsessed with money and was happy to do whatever it took to get those few extra pennies. During the take over, he actually stopped his food factories from making food on a wide scale, only making it for those businesses who paid extra.
Brooke Spink was a bad ass. She grew up with a factory owner as a father, and came to know his business inside out. So much so, she created her own business and drove his to bankruptcy. He ended up dying due to the stress she caused, and Brooke didn't even shed a single tear. She was just as ruthless as Amelia, which was why they were such good friends.
The five joined forces, resources, and minds to insure their take over succeeded. 10 years after first starting to plan, they had taken over the city.
The Grey Army
The Grey Army is just that. An army. Well, the Army that belongs to the Leaders. It has many purposes, but it is mainly the police force of the Grey City. Much of their training is based off of the training Amelia Mercia had went through in the police academy. All members of the Grey Army go through intensive combat training. The Grey Army is separated into five bits, and the bit a member is part of depends on the Set they were born in.
Grey Army A
All members of the Grey Army who were born in Set A are a part of Grey Army A. As well as brilliant fighters, they are scientists. More specifically, the scientists who run the secret labs in Faction 1A.
Grey Army B
All members of the Grey Army who were born in Set B are a part of Grey Army B. They are excellent at combat, and also work with Grey Army A and Grey Army C to create new and better tactical gear.
Grey Army C
All members of the Grey Army who were born in Set C are a part of Grey Army C. As well as being good at combat, they are also brilliant at surveillance, coding and designing technology. They are the ones in charge of making new technology, with the help of Grey Army A where needed.
Grey Army D
All members of the Grey Army who were born in Set D are a part of Grey Army D. As well as being fighters, they are also chefs and are in charge of making and preparing the good food that the Leaders and their families eat.
Grey Army E
All members of the Grey Army who were born in Set E are a part of Grey Army E. They are the main ones who deal out punishments amd executions. Some claim to enjoy doing so. Some of them are business and financial experts as well, who basically help to make sure the City doesn't go broke.
The tactical gear consists a form fitting light grey body suit under dark grey, lightweight body armor and boots. All members of the Grey Army carry a lightweight gun. In addition to this, they also have stun guns and all carry a concealed knife somewhere on their body.
The Rebellion has always been around, since the Grey took over. Few know about it, and even fewer are a part of it. Recently, rumors have arose, relating to the Rebellion, but the Leaders have been explicitly clear about what will happen to those who oppose their rule; Only the suicidal and stupidly bold would ignore the warnings and still join.
20 years after the Grey took over, there was an attempt to overthrow the Leaders. It involved a lot of fighting and a lot of death, on both sides. Eventually, the Leaders managed to capture and execute all those known to be involved.
However, one particular child who grew up listening to tales of his dead parents deeds decided he wanted to finish what they had started. This was 45 years after the Grey took over. This time, he realised they needed to plan it properly, with the same weapons the Grey Army had. He also realised they needed the help of someone on the Leaders side. That is where London Mercia came in. He convinced her to help, which wasn't actually too hard, and 3 years later she had become the Leader of Set B, which was just perfect. They planned in secret, communicating using scrambled signals on their CCDs.
3 years ago, 57 years after the Grey took over, this man was executed for attacking members of the Grey Army who were taking his second son away. His first son, Daniel Hunter, stepped up to take his place. He continued the planning with London and his sister, operating out of Faction 3E.
Since its creation, the Rebellions purpose has been to get rid of the dictators that called themselves Leaders, and bring back the color and individuality of the original city.
