[REQ] 3075: out into the black (4 person) (2/3) [open]

If you're willing to consistently post a paragraph and want more depth than casual, try this on for size. (5-10 sentences per post, on average.)

The concept
It is now over 1000 years since humanity has left the sole confinement of the earth and for the first time in history the human population has reached 15 billion. The expansion in population didn't come without drawbacks however...

Earth is a smog filled pit of a place, with a population over 11 billion and horrible air quality in the population centres only the poorest and those unable to fare the trip off world remain to work hard for their accepted 40 years of life when not using prohibitively expensive life support systems.
With the main businesses being the export of water, oxygen, agricultural produce and recycling the other worlds waste nobody here is going to be having an easy way to get rich.

Mars has become the home of the so called 'middle classes', who lead better lives than those on earth, but not by much. The air is clean for her 3 billion inhabitants so they do live longer, unfortunately the air there in their habitation domes is lower in oxygen than even on Earth and with the distance from the home bodies of the earth and the moon some specialist parts companies and food suppliers simply don't send enough to keep up or simply don't care about the red planet, just leading to just another form of poverty in the end.

The moon has become very much the home of the elite of the elite and those lucky few who work under them, only those who work in the factory districts living at the third rung of the socioeconomic ladder have any need to think about hard labouring here.
The people who own the asteroid mining corporations live here. The people who manufacture the highest quality life support systems live here.
With her lowest gravity of the widely inhabited planetary bodies and no atmosphere any shipyard company would be foolish to be anywhere else but here... The moon is where everyone aspires to be or be able to put their family to live through hard efforts even if such a goal may be 380,000km out of reach.

Other planets and moons have seen colonisation efforts, ones that are supported scientific expeditions and by no means capable to self sustain, but these are the narrowly accesable second rung of this solar system socioeconomic system. Intelligent people get paid substancially to satiate the interest of those with money looking for resources to exploit to get more money after all. So that's well paid, right?...

Somewhere outside the ladder of economics there's spacers, the people who live nomadically out of their privatly owned ships, no richer than those on earth for comforts but no poorer than the moguls on the moon as to what resources they can obtain... The only thing is that the only laws in space are the laws of physics and the advice that you know the competency of your crew.

Opening the situation
The subsurface dome just peaking out of the surface of the red coarse dusty ground, some of its pock marked glass panels making up the outer layers of the shallow dome having been blown through from the outside being just a hint to the hazards outside those mere 8 spaced layers of silicon dioxide. Belew those silent panels of glass lay the bustling air of the plaza, food stalls and the square seating area that sat directly below the domes peak being buffeted by the variable buffet of food scents the ones who could afford to be there right on the periphery of the seating as their waiting staff zipped between tables and back to their respective employer's stall as they were doing business with customers.

A full face respiratory mask wearing individual being simply sat with a briefcase between their thighs and a soda can sized canister plugged into one side of their mask, simple steel stamped thing printed with 'MRE, unflavoured' in mint green screen print iink on the metal shell, a bundle of hoses running down into their jacket from the other side the mask presented without care for all the glances from the native inhabitants as they were going about busines. The flimsy folding aluminium table in front of the baggily padded form of that individual already lying with no less than three other metal canisters of the same variety as they had connected to their mask at this time and by any guess they had more on them within the many visible pockets on their person for any number of meals more.
No eyes could be seen behind the mirrored visor they wore and by any guess they could just as easily be looking anywhere at anytime from behind the visor... It was enough to make one wonder, why was this person here? To deal? To kill? Maybe to sabatage the already failing atmospheric recyclers? Who could say. They looked like, for how long they had been there, they hadn't found what they were here for yet but nobody dared risk attempting to aprehend this person. Who knows what they might be carrying for a weapon or if they might be heavy handed with its use...

Character sheet

Name: Kelly Suffrangur

Gender: male, although does more often appear indeterminable.

Age:25

Height: 178cm

Oxygen acclimatisation: 19% content @ 100% of earth's atmospheric pressure

Planet of origin: Earth

Hair: raven Black, tied back into a ponytail commonly.

Eye colour: Hazel

Skin colour: pale, freckled

Kelly was born to a farming family and through neccesity became familiar with the inner workings and operations of many pieces of machinery and from the frequent scavenging runs to the salvage yards for parts.
While in his teens both of his parents succumbed to the toxins and the farm passed to his eldest sister and her husband's family who all saw his obsessed tinkering with the machines out of loss of his parents to be risky to the livelyhoods of all on the farm, so he got kicked out. He took the kick out quite literally and pieced together a ship from parts using his knowledge before leaving that place behind to begin a life of using his skills to follow the money, no matter how clean or dirty the money was in the end.

(I'm more used to growing characters over time so that's why there isn't a much of a history segment. If you think I've missed anything)

Further details
I'd like to try doing it as a hodgepodge recruiting effort for the overall initial situation I posted up there above, out of a variety of roles on board a ship some would be:

Senior roles;
Chief engineering officer (p) (obsessive tinker, main trait, my character)

Chief ordnance officer (o)

Medical officer (o)

Pilot/ copilot (s) (o) (fly a ship well from gained experience at the helm but not strictly trained, side trait, my character)

Drone operations officer (o)

Junior roles;
Ship gunner (o) (o)

Engineer (o) (o)

First aider (o) (o)

Fighter pilot (o) (if ship is big enough in time)

Key
(p) =taken primary position, (s) = taken secondary position, open to be competed by a primary position in the role, (o) = open position.

_____

I'm new to the forum format so please ask me if something is missing that would be expected normally.

It's an interesting setting. Can you go into a little more detail on potential plotlines and/or what sorts of other characters you're hoping to attract? Like, are you looking for shady types for a smuggling run, general populace for a slice-of-dystopian-life, cops and robbers for an opposition/combat setup? The prompt is a little vague on direction, and I think maybe putting some more detail into that will help people come up with characters.

Thanks I shall make some edits and try to clarify what it is I'm looking into in terms of plot.

I'm used to having to write with enough abstraction to try to obtain some interest in 100% of a sample of 1 rather than trying to obtain significant interest in say 2% of a sample of 50.

Tldr: I'm used to trying to interest the other person to want to RP, rather than make an interesting idea for people to rp from. Sorry I'll try and adjust.

Hey, no worries, and honestly the other way can work too, I've just seem stuff get more attention if it's got some more detail on what you're looking for in terms of direction, and you'd specifically asked if people had questions. You're obviously a creative person to throw something like this together.

Are you 100% on the 1x1 thing? There's a lot of people who enjoy those, so it's no problem if that's your preference - just that I'm personally not a 1x1 person. If you decide to open it up to more people, though, I'd be interested in giving it a shot.

I'm not 100% on it, it's just what I know, but with a bone dry idea like this I agree having some dynamic would benifit this idea and a group setting couldn't hurt. I'll trim down the directions to help bring together all the people who on knowing where it will likely go towards in the beginning.

No reason I can't make the idea again another time to head in a different direction after all.

Thank you for the help so far, I'm trusting any advice I get while I continue to become acclimatised to how to function on this site.

My only other suggestion might be editing your title to reflect the RP a little more, that'll get more people to look in.

Let's try this - let me know if it doesn't work for you. I am always amenable to changing up a character to make them fit better.

Character Sheet
Name: Jenna Alarcan
Gender: female
Age: 27
Height: 167 cm
Oxygen Acclimatization: ??? Not really sure, feel free to make a suggestion
Planet of Origin: Mars
Hair color: brown, shortish, usually worn up in spiky pigtails with red-tinted tips
Eyes: brown
Skin Color: fair, though would probably be a bit more tanned on Earth - Mars' distance from the sun means less UV exposure.

Jenna grew up in the Mars undercities, running around with unsavory people from early childhood. She's convinced of two things: (1): Mars, and its people, are superior to anything on Earth, and (2) Mars is a cesspit. It's a curious blend of sanctimony and sarcasm. She does odd jobs, for money or favors. She's not very particular about what the jobs are. Some of them are even legal.

Like you, I usually prefer a brief character description and the chance to develop over time, but if you'd like more to it, I'm happy to add on.

My take on the different planetary atmospheres

Earth atmosphere: mild to moderate ambient toxin content, 19% oxygen content with standard earth pressures.

Mars in dome atmosphere: 10-12% oxygen content with 70-80% earth atmosphere pressure.
Mars out of dome atmosphere: negligible oxygen, 0.05% earth atmosphere pressure, near completely carbon dioxide atmosphere.

Moon in structure atmosphere: 30% oxygen content with 120% earth atmospheric pressure.
Moon exterior atmosphere: essentially none.

In ship atmospheres are adjustable for occupants.

I'm intrigued
Where's our sacrifice?
Oh, get off the cross, we need the wood.

I'm happy you could be interested in my idea, is there anything you would like to ask or need input on that I could help out with?
