[CS/Info] Austen's Institute (1997)

Post by Trandafir » Wed Dec 06, 2017 12:13 pm

THE HOUSE

An old, yet conserved house with red brick walls, with a heavy wooden door for an entrance. The front garden is poorly taken care of, but the grass on the backyard is evenly trimmed, as it's used as an area of entertainment and practice for the children.

First Floor

As soon as you step into the Austen's Institute you'll find yourself in a narrow hallway, with a large starcase in the far back. turning to your left, you'll get to the large living room; a place with big windows, a television, VHS player, CD player, two large couches and a few unmatching chairs, enough to fit the entire household for a movie night. A few toys are often scattered around the room, and the floor is covered by a red carpet. It's usually kept clean, but some food and drink stains never left the fabric. At the far end of the living you'll find two doors, one to the bathroom and another to the small library that has a total stash of 179 books on diverse subjects; mostly didactic as the children are homeschooled at the institute.

Now turning to the right, there's the dining room. The dining room consists of three large tables, each corresponding to an age group. It's not a strict rule, but younger children tend to sit together, as well as older children and so on. The room's walls have another two doors, one that'll lead to Amelia's room and another to the kitchen, that's large enough for three people to cook at once, despite the narrow space between the appliances. In the corner, a door will take you out to the backyard.

Second Floor

A narrow corridor with several doors that each leads to one bedroom. The rooms are separated by age and gender; boys and girls from ages 4 to 10, 11 to 14 and 15 to 17. There are six large rooms in total with several beds, and a nursery for the toddlers at the end of the hall. Two bathrooms, separated by gender.

Attic

Sarah's room and storage space.

Name: Amelia Austen
Gender: Female
Age: 68
Time in the Institute: 35 years

Abilities:
None. Nada. Nothing.

Personality:
Those who have known Amelia for more than two years will remember her as a sweet, caring motherly figure with the eyes of an angel. She could be harsh at times when children would misbehave, but overall, it was impossible to deny the love she feels for every one of the children in the institute.

That changed however, when two years prior to this story a degenerative desease started to develop in the not so young woman's brain. The doctor determined the cause of it to be the exposure to radiation (from her years working at the lab), and within those two years, Amelia lost the ability to walk, started having allucinations and memory loss. Her sight isn't as good as it used to be either.

Bio:
Young Amelia was a brilliant cientist, and one of the very few woman to work at the lab. She had a husband who was an architect and together, they gave birth to Ruth when Amelia was 31 years old. They'd been planning to expand on their family for years, but work would always get in the way. Ruth had just been born when the incident with the laboratory occured, but only one year later Amelia realized that there was something different with her daughter. Something special.

It didn't take long for it to hit the news. Not Ruth, but other children who had also been born with inhuman abilities. A two year old baby set their own crib on fire, Another one was found floating on their sleep. Amelia had access to the researches, and she knew very well what was going on, despite an agreement that kept her from taking the information to the government.

Then the fear started. Babies would be abandoned in churches' staircases, while others who had extra limbs would be treated by doctors who had no idea of what sort of sickness would give some babies horns, scaled skin or even a tail. Amelia, with the help of her husband started rescuing those children, and that's how the Austen's institute was created.

Edgar Austen died under unknown circunstances 20 years ago. The smile vanishes from Amelia's face everytime she is reminded of the incident that got her husband killed.

Extra: Amelia stays locked inside her room, and only the staff members and doctors are allowed to visit her.

Name: Sarah Austen
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Time in the Institute: She lived in the institute from birth until she was 12, returned at 17 and has been around for the past three years.

Abilities:
Empathy - The ability to sense, feel and understand the emotions of others. Sarah's empathy developed with time, and at first, she didn't realize she had this ability at all. Just like the other abilities she possesses, she prefers to keep it as a secret. She can sense emotions of people who are physically close to her, in the same room she is. The stronger the emotional bond she has with others, the easier it gets to identify those emotions, and the range increases significantly if it's someone she cares about.

Lie Detection - Empaths can sense when a person is lying to them, as lying can cause an irregularity in one's emotions. It may be harder to identify if the person is unknown to her.

Emotion Manipulation - This skill is not yet mastered and almost never utilized, as it's against Sarah's interest to have people realize she has that sort of control. She can manipulate other people's emotions or feelings, but has a smaller range then her empathy. Physical touch or very close proximity is necessary for this skill to work.

Personality:
Sarah is kind, responsible and, overall, good. For her the people in the institute are her family, and she'd do anything in her power to protect them and keep them safe. She can be quite secretive about a portion of her past, but whenever she's asked about it she'll brush it off with a smile, changing the subject to something trivial; like what they wish they could have for breakfast the next morning.

She was taught by her grandmother not to hate the common people; in fact, for a long time she believed to be one of them. She shares Amelia's values and ideology, that people who have special abilities must lay low and learn how to live in society, concealing an important part of who they are in order not to frighten people.

Bio:
Sarah was raised by her grandmother in the Institute for her mother was too young at the time (she had her baby at 17) and didn't have the means or intention to support an infant. Sarah's mother left the Orphanage as soon as she turned 18, and didn't return until Sarah was already 12 to take her to live with her in the city.

Sarah doesn't like to speak about the time she spent with her mother, and it was between the age of 12 and 17 that she realized she wasn't as normal as she'd always thought she was. Her empathy was more than just a personality trait, and as soon as she found that out, she started practicing this ability in secret. She didn't want her mother or anyone to know she was anything but ordinary.

Without speaking a word to anyone about what had happened while she was away, Sarah returned to the Austen's Institute at the age of 17 to help Amelia to take care of the kids. Not only that, but she has to take care of the old woman as well as age hadn't been kind to her, added to the amount of toxins she'd been exposed to in her youth working for the Lab.

Name: Haven Barns
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Time in the Institute: Year and a half
Abilities:
  • Wings
Haven was born with wings, allowing her to fly. Yep, that's pretty much it. They're not super strong so she can only carry up to one other person with her. She can't fly for long periods of time either, she has to take breaks just like any other winged creature.
  • Super strength
Her super strength hasn't been tested yet, therefore she has no idea as to just how strong she really is. The more she uses this ability the more tired she will become, of course. Just because she's super strong doesn't mean she has invulnerability. She sucks at hugs, almost always injuring the other person.

Personality: Haven was in a lot of ways incredibly naive. Being sheltered for more than half her life, she knew nothing of the world or of people in general. Being chased out of her home and losing her mother really affected and hardened her in a way that nothing else could have. Now? Well now she's one tough bitch. She trusts no one, and try to get her to change and she'll back hand you into the next century. She keeps to herself unless she absolutely has to talk to people. And don't stare at her freaking wings -- it annoys her to no end. She's more of a "just effing do it" kind of girl. No coddling. No sweet words. No dresses, no pink and fluffy ponies. She's all scraped up knees and bony elbows.

Bio: Haven was born in a small town, to a single woman who formerly worked at Alpha Labs. Although the woman had not worked there for quite some time, being exposed to the toxic matter that was released into the water supply mutated her daughter and brought forth the little baby's wings. Scared and alone, the woman turned to the local church, who saw the baby as an angel sent from god. At age 3, Haven knew how to zip back and forth around the church grounds better than she knew how to run. Truly seeing the small girl as an angel from the heavens, the people from the church protected and kept the woman's daughter a secret. They had her sheltered in the church's attic, away from the rest of the town. This was how things were until one day, when she was 15 and fet up with her "incarceration", Haven broke out and went out into town. Upon being spotted she was quickly chased back to the church by the townsfolk, many in fear and others in awe. Arguments and fights broke out and Haven's mother was killed. This is how Haven ended up flying away and living on the street for a whole year before she found her way to the Austen's institute.

CHARACTER SHEET

Name: Billie Greyson.
Gender: Female.
Age: Seventeen years old.
Time in the Institute: Ten years.
Abilities: Billie possesses a magical power that can do many things, ranging from shielding others to creating sharp disks and moving heavy things. It appears as a ghostly blue aura that moves however she wants it to. Relating closely to these powers are telekinetic powers, but they are not as strong. The strength of her powers is directly linked to her own energy and strength.
Billie's powers are limited to her line of sight. For example, she would not be able to watch a live viewing on television and have any affect on anything. Depending on the intensity of her performance, Billie's powers can cause her to experience extreme exhaustion, migraines, and nosebleeds.
Personality: Billie is a rather quiet and reserved young woman when not provoked. She is rather weary of other people and does not trust a stranger. Once Billie does find someone to trust, she will do anything to keep them safe. Her trust in others runs very deep.
Bio: (your character's life prior to getting to the Institute)
Billie is the daughter of Alice Greyson, a young mother that was affected by the Lab incident back in 1960. Alice possessed the ability to move things with her mind, an ability she discovered when she was ten years old. She did her best to hide her powers, but it was hard to suppress. Her parents found their child to be a freak, something dangerous around their other children. After some research, they found a place that would take her in and properly care for her. Alice was admitted into Austin's Institute at thirteen years old in 1970.
In this place, Alice was able to forge many friendships with kids and adults alike, and eventually found love with a boy named James Rogers. The two fell deeply in love, and so when they were old enough to live on their own they moved out of the orphanage together. Though they were not married, a baby was on the way soon after they moved in. Unfortunately, James' kind personality ultimately led to his demise. While the young couple was walking home from a nice dinner they could finally afford, a woman's purse was ripped from her hands. James went after the man and confronted him only to be shot and killed. Alice was devasted, and now she had a newborn daughter to care for. At twenty-three years old, Alice felt more alone with her daughter than ever before.

Billie was born in 1980 without a father. She showed signs of strong abilities at five years old, greatly worrying her young mother. Fearing the safety of her only child, Alice sent Billie away to Austen's Institute for protection. Since then, Billie has only really known about her family through those that knew her parents in thier time at the orphanage.

Name: Vanessa Wilson
Gender: Female
Age: 15

Time in the Institute:
She’s lived in the institute for 10 years, since she was 5.

Abilities:
Electricity Manipulation - The ability to manipulate and conduct electric energy. Vanessa is a producer of electric energy, so she can apply a constant flow or short burst of energy upon an object or person. She can feel electric flow in a fifteen foot radius around her, and is able to stop and apply electricity to a conducting object. For example, Vanessa could apply more electricity to a toaster to heat a piece of toast up faster, or she could hold the electric flow to stop it from working temporarily. If she wanted, she could apply enough energy to short circuit the toaster, therefore breaking it indefinitely.

Electric Immunity - Vanessa produces her own electric energy within her, so large amounts of electricity applied to her will not cause harm.

Weaknesses - Like any type of electric current, Vanessa’s abilities need a conductor. Metals like copper, wire, and water are all great conductors, but something like wood, rubber, and plastic are not, and stop currents from passing. Air is also not a conductor, and she would have to apply an exponentially large amount of electricity to create a lightning bolt in the air. She is not able to harness something like a lightning bolt, nor has she ever tried.

Emotional levels affect Vanessa’s abilities. When feeling a strong emotion like anger, parts of her hair can stand on end, and her skin could lightly shock you, like when you rub your socks on a carpet and touch a doorknob.

Lastly, Vanessa doesn’t have an infinite amount of electricity. If she uses too much for something very large, she needs to ‘recharge’ before she can use her abilities. Using too much electricity can result in a sort of short circuit, or in her case, fainting. This has only happened once when she was younger.

Personality:
Vanessa is a creative teenager who enjoys applying her feelings to the arts. She likes to sing, listen to the same mix of songs on her portable cassette player, and draw or paint with whatever they have in the institute. She’s a little moody like any 15 year old girl would be, and can be a little irritable, especially in the mornings. The girl can be a little odd at times, but who can help it when you’re a living toaster? Her mentality is to not care about what others think, and live her life. She’s sociable and content, but is curious about being outside of the town. Overall, she’s social and content with living in the institute.

Bio:
Vanessa was born to Heather and George Wilson, a happily married couple in the city. They moved when Heather was around 4 months along, and the water supply affected her soon-to-be daughter’s health. When she was born, everything was normal, according to the doctor. However, over time, things seemed to change. To the parents, it was just a coincidence that the lights flickered a little when Vanessa would throw a tantrum over broccoli or milk. She was only 3, what harm could she do? Since she was so young, she couldn't control any of her abilities. They were almost nonexistent unless she was sad or angry.

It was when she recently turned five that her parents realized there was something different about their child. Vanessa had lost her favorite stuffed animal (it was a turtle), and she started to sob as if she'd lost a friend. Her parents tried everything they could to calm her down until the light bulb in a nearby lamp shattered from the electric heat. The lights in the room all went out, and they stayed out until Marcus and Heather found the stuffed turtle. Like magic, all of the lights turned back on (except for the lamp, that was too broken to sputter back on). Vanessa had been holding the flow of energy in that room without realizing it. A month later, her parents realized what they had to do, she became a resident of the Austen's Institute.

Appearance: Image

Vanessa has eyes that are the color of stone, with a hint of blue. Her hair is a dirty blonde with auburn and gold tints in a shoulder length style, and she wears simple clothing with a pair of some sort of jeans, usually distressed from use.

Extra:
The only thing she has left from her old home that wasn't lost is a stuffed sea turtle. She still has it on her bed, even at 15.

[NAME] Kye Veorra
[GENDER] male
[AGE] 11
[TIME IN THE INSTITUTE] two weeks. Long enough to remember most of everyone's names and know where the usual facilities are.

[ABILITIES]
Kye can teleport himself and objects using shadows as portals. Specifically, he can only the shadows of a certain size. The objects have to be equal or bigger than the teleporting item to pass through. He is only able to use his own shadow, or inanimate objects within a 5 meter range as shadow portals. The destination portal needs to be somewhere he has been to previously. If it is actual people or animals' shadows, he needs actual physical contact with the shadow.

There is no extra dimension between the any two portals, so the teleported item will always appear on the other side immediately.

As this is a form of shadow manipulation, this is solely limited to shadows. Therefore being simply in the dark does not grant him this ability. There always need to be a light source somewhere, for the shadow to be cast. To stop Kye from using this ability, the best way is to simply knock him unconscious. The intensity of the shadow does not affect the performance.

[PERSONALITY]
Outside of baseball, Kye is quick-tempered and impulsive. With his rough manners, he has very little idea of how to treat the girls of his age in the "proper manner". His love for sports and games might make him popular among boys, but he's not very well-liked by the girls of his age. While he is rather stubborn, he has a strong sense of courage and justice.

He's proud of two things: his (previously) great control in pitching, and Caewynn. Kye is always proud and happy when people say he is similar to his brother. There are odd triggers that may cause him to be rather sensitive, one in particular is his overuse injury in his left arm.

[BIO]

[APPEARANCE]
Image

[EXTRA]
Gaius is a deceased student in the same class as Caewynn. He died due to blood loss from a car accident. The incident was suspected to be murder rather than a simple accident, as there were signs of bruises on his arm and nose. It appeared he may have been in a fight before what seemed like he was pushed towards the middle of the road.

Caewynn Veorra (17 years old) was one of the suspects initially. His classmates have said that Caewynn and Gaius have disliked each other intensely, as Caewynn was found to be blackmailed by Gaius previously. However, the suspect has said that he was with his younger brother Kye in a park in another district. This has been confirmed also by a neighbourhood lady that was passing by briefly.

The newspaper have not published any further articles though investigators have privately documented the case as closed.

Name: Sophia King
Gender: Female
Age: 6 ¼
Time in the Institute: about a year (but she claims it's been a lot more than that)

Abilities: Physical initiative. Sophia can learn through physical contact with her environment. This works with any physical contact and nearly any object or thing around her. This allows her to instantly know more about what she is touching, for example, where the wood in a shelf comes from or what metals are in a piece of steel. With objects that she is very familiar with, she can check them for certain things, or pull out the information that she needs. However, new objects or things' properties can not be filtered yet so she picks up all of their properties. Objects that are created through supernatural means cannot have their properties detected.

Her power works the same way for living things, but because of how complex they are, what she can pick up is very limited. Through contact, she can determine emotions, and their causes if the target allows her to. If her target makes a conscious mental link between an emotion and a memory or thought, then she may pick this up too, giving her others a way to soundlessly communicate with her. She does not keep this information for long, and forgets most of it during the brain's organisation during sleep.

weaknesses: Sophia's mind is very easily pushed into a sensory overload. If she tries to take in too much information at once, like many objects for example, then her brain will not be able to cope. This may lead to anything from hiding in a corner, panic, fainting or what seems to have the symptoms of physical torture.

To avoid this, Sophia has been taught to be careful and to know exactly where her entire body is at all times, leading to good motor control and hand eye coordination. She tries to cover up, as her power will also not work through material, which would instead be picked up. She also usually wears the same materials so that no new information will catch her off guard.

Personality: Sophia is known by most as a sweetheart. A social butterfly at heart, she will seek out new people to talk to, but will always return to her friends. She is fiercely loyal, and will always defend those that she likes, but cannot do much to help due to her age and size. Sophia also gravitates more towards authority figures than her own age group, finding comfort in being a follower.

Bio: Sophia and her parents moved into a new house when she was nearly 4, and had never had so many new things to explore. She had ran around the house to check out each room, running her hand along the wall as she did so. Her parents started to suspect that their daughter may not have been entirely normal when, after shouting the ingredients in the type of paint on their walls, their little girl collapsed. When no doctor could find anything wrong with the child, and as Sophia's seemingly random outbursts increased in number, her parents tried the last option that they felt that they had: Austen's institute. Her parents gave her a small potted plant to look after as a goodbye, promising that when she grows up, she will be able to come home.

Appearance: Image

Extra: Sophia usually wears a pink tutu over leggings, a simple top and pink princess gloves.
