The Doomed City

Post by JEBtheGamer1 » Fri Jun 23, 2017 3:59 am

Nine years have passed since the plague started. Eight since it reached America. Seven since it spread. Six since it reached this city. Five since they tried to save us. Four since they tried to kill us. Three since we lost hope. Two since we made hope for ourselves. One since work began. Now, we fight.

Nine long years have passed. But the city was always doomed. When the bombs fell, Four years ago, some of us thought it was the end for the city. But it wasn't. We still trudged along. The looting started five or six years ago, before the bombings. Guns, food, TVs, watever they could get their hands on. Those people gave up before a lot of us, but they're the ones who came out smiling. They formed the first gangs, gangs that now rule many streets. Gangs the military tries to fight, and fails. Some are benevolent, trying to protect those who can't protect themselves. Others just kill for food, or for fun.

It's really always Winter here. The crunching snow underfoot, giving way to crunching glass from broken windows. Gasoline is long gone, furrowed away into jerry cans to power generators for the strongest fortresses in burned out buildings. The rusting husks of cars still litter the roads, wind blowing the white powder eerily down the street. The powder reclaims the cars, the things that caused this eternal Winter to come.

And yet we humans survive. Humanity is broken, and this city is condemned. Or it was. We built our hope back. We were immune to the plague, now we're all that are left. With the military making their moves in an attempt to regain order, we might just have society again. But until then, we simply exist. Survive. Scavenge. Fight.

OOC:
This is a post apocalyptic survival, not really based on anything. Feel free to make a character military, or part of one of the gangs, or simply surviving on their own. I would recommend having all PCs that are going to survive be on the 'good' side. The story of this world is that years ago a plague started, and spread quickly across the globe. When quarantine failed, the American government began to bomb the city. At this time, electricity was also shut off, making gasoline and gas generators a target for the major gangs. Global warming, and the bombings, caused a Winter to occur. It's cold, but not deadly so.

As for rules, here they are:

NOTE: Technically, due to the nature of free form (or, Open Range as it seems to have been changed back to) some of the rules may be optional. Please read them regardless, and I ask that you regard them all as non-optional (with the exception of the date and location rule, though that does make things easier if we're all in different locations) since I have selected them to ensure the RP runs smoothly. Thanks.

The usual stuff (RP Forum rules, Simple section rules, be courteous to others)
No Godmodding
Do not control other characters
When interacting, try to wait at least 24 hours for characters to respond
If no response comes, unless an affecting event is happening (eg combat), try to guess at the most likely reaction of the other character.
Label your location, and if necessary the date at the top of every post in bold
Use proper grammar and punctuation, or as close as you can. This is just to make things readable, otherwise it's difficult to understand what's happening.
Integrate your character when you introduce them. Don't try to immediately shove them in the spotlight.
Put potato at the top of your first post just for fun (yes this is a real rule, it's really to confirm you've read the rules)

The snow crunched underfoot as Jeb carefully made his way down the street. These roads and buildings were neutral ground a week ago, but he kept his hand near the small pistol he always had easily accessible. A puff of water vapour collected in front of him as he exhaled, kneeling next to a mound. He brushed it off to reveal a desiccated corpse, riddles with holes. Diving into cover behind a mound of snow he could only assume was a car, he wondered if whoever did this was still here. Reaching back, he pulled out his knife, then wiped snow off of his goggles, before peering around the car. Nothing to be seen or heard. He carefully made his way past the car, and towards the building on his left. Formerly a 7/11 it would now make a good shelter from the increasing snowfall. He walked through the door frame, it's glass doors long shattered, and built a small fire pit using bits of shelving, roof shingles, and hundred dollar bills as firestarter. He had a couple matches, and used one to light his fire, then pulled a can of beans out and began warming it.

Addy wears a heavy blue coat over a regular black jacket and red plaid shirt, underneath that being a black t-shirt. She wears ripped jeans and hiking boots and fingerless gloves. Sometimes she wears a grey winter hat, but only when it's too cold not to.

Near 7/11; June 29th, 2029
Addy trudged on through the snow with her hands grasping thebfront of her jacket and the hood pulled as far over her head as it would go. The zipper on the front of her heavy coat had snapped off, but luckily she wore another zipped jacket underneath. Too bad the cold cut through all of that. She shuffled through the snow as fast as she could manage, squinting through the snow that fell relentlessly. If she had known it would be like this sooner, she would have stayed at the old grocery store longer. Behind her trailed a dog, a German shepard that had a nasty scar over his snout and eye and was also missing his front left leg. He stayed behind Addy, walking only in her tracks. Addy had found the dog two years ago after a group of men had nearly beaten him to death. They remained together ever since.
Addy shivered as she looked around desperately for shelter, knowing that if she found none that it would be her death. Shit...that would suck. She turned back to look at the dog, seeing how he was doing. Snow dotted his fur. "Well, at least you have a coat already, Dumbass." It was a fitting name for the dog. Addy paused as she saw a building up ahead, something like a gas station she assumed. She sighed in relief and headed straight for it, as fast as she could manage. The dog's ears went up as he noticed the sudden perk in Addy's step and immediately went faster himself, running ahead of her. He came to the door before she and stood before it, flattening his ears. He smelled another presence and began barking. Addy reached the door and crouched down next to him, doing her best to silence him. "Shut up, Dumbass! You fucking moron." She shook her head and opened the door while pulling out her pistol with the other hand.

is it safe to assume the 7/11 looks like http://www.mithrilandmages.com/blog/wp- ... _store.png?

7/11; June 19 2029

Eli groggily blinked awake, trying to stave off sleepiness as the faint smell of smoke filled the air. Standing up to stretch out the dull aches that came with sleeping in an awkward position, the teen quickly snapped out of the drowsiness, realising that if there was a fire, another person had probably found refuge at the convenience store while they had been asleep.

Silently walking to the office door left slightly ajar, Eli glanced through the gap past a few grocery isles to make out the figure of a man warming a can of beans over an open fire.

The teen leaned back against the wall next to the door, tugged up their bandana, and tried to figure out what the options were. The youth still had a few magazines of ammunition together with the well-used automatic pistol they were used in, but ammo conservation was the goal here. The nearest military camp where the pistol and its ammo had been obtained was probably taken over by one of the hostile gangs by now. Eli could threaten the man with the pistol, but decided against it and opted to just sneak out instead.

The teen started to inch the door open painstakingly slowly, leaving just enough space to stealthily slip out into the public area of the convenience store. Crouching low, Eli crept towards the exit using the cover of the shopping isles. Focusing on not making any noise at all, the teen failed to notice an empty aluminium can perched precariously on its shelf, brushing a shoulder against it and sending it tumbling to the floor.

Ordinarily, the sound would not have been that loud. In the empty 7/11 store with just the quiet wind punctuating the silence, the clatter sounded deafening. Eli froze in the middle of stepping to the exit, quickly drawing the pistol and pointing it at the man in one smooth motion. "Don't move. Hands in the air, nice and easy."

At that moment, the noise of a dog barking sounded throughout the store, coming from outside.

Addy held the dog back as she opened the door and stepped inside quietly. There was no one there from what she could tell. The dog slipped in after her and started sniffing around the area, nose sorting through some rubbish on the ground. Addy searched through the shelves for anything to salvage. The dog had reached the end of the aisle and stopped. He began growling as he saw two others in the store. Addy looked over at him and furrowed her brow, questioning what he was growling at. She peeked over the shelf and saw the people ahead of her. "Oh, fuck." Addy crouched down and beckoned the dog towards her once again. He whined and went towards her, fur standing on end. God dammit....Please don't look over here.

7/11, June 19th 2029 Floor plan: http://www.mithrilandmages.com/blog/wp- ... _store.png

As soon as a sound was heard, his pistol was at hand. Eli's brief freeze was more than enough time for Jeb to get his pistol pointed at Eli. But Eli was just as fast. "Hands in the air?" he stated, his voice raspy. "Or what? You'll shoot me for a can of beans?" the sudden dog barking alerted Jeb, but he didn't flinch. "I'd not risk the noise, and besides, dog tastes better than beans. Take 'em." Lowering his pistol, he turned towards the noise and pulled his knife, and quietly began moving towards where he thought the dog was.

(also, is this map of where everyone is accurate? J is Jeb, A is Addy, I is Eli because I thought his name was Ian)

(It looks pretty accurate to me!)

Addy grabbed the dog as he trotted over to her and held him close, wrapping one arm around his neck and the other arm holding up her pistol. She stayed as silent as she could manage, burying her mouth into the dog's fur to muffle the sound of her breath. Dumbass even seemed to catch on. He stared in the direction he smelled the others at intensely, standing protectively over Addy as she remained crouched on the floor. She could hear the voices of two people talking about the dog, saying how he would taste better than some shitty can of beans. Her grip tightened on the pistol as the soft crackling of the flames was all she heard now. Addy furrowed her brow and waited for the inevitable as her finger rested on the trigger.

(for the map I'm still unsure of where Eli is. Placed him in a good place to draw on Jeb, but he might be further down and aiming down one of the aisles, though it'd be a poor line of sight even though they're empty. Because Eli didn't spot Addy, I assumed he hadn't moved that far yet, though that may be incorrect)

Pulling out a can of dog food, Jeb approached the entrance. He opened it using the pull tab, and began waving it around. "Here doggy doggy..." he called out quietly, then whistled quietly. A gust of wind blew snow into his face, and he angrily spat a clump onto the floor to his right. With this glance, he saw movement in the dark at the end of the aisle...

(It sounds logical to me. I assumed that he was just a few feet from Jeb anyways.)

Addy held her grip around the dog tighter as she heard one of the people beckoning him towards their location to draw him out. She pulled him closer and watched with extreme alertness, feeling the soft fur between her fingers. Addy formulated a plan in her mind as the man continued attempting to coax the dog. They could easily go out the way they came in if there was some sort of distraction. But there wasn't anything that would work out in her favor. If she turned her back, there was a better chance of her being shot or caught, whichever came first. She had surprise on her side. The door was right there...
Addy let go of the dog and got up off the ground. She held her pistol in front of her and aimed it in the direction of the man, then moved forward to get in view of him. Addy fired three times as her dog barked in retaliation as well. "Go, Dumbass, go!" He only got in the way as Addy tried to back away towards the door, causing her to trip over him and fall backwards onto her back. "Goddammit! Fucking dog..." Her pistol slipped out of her hand and skittered across the tile floor, and so Addy made a move to crawl towards it.

(yea position is ok)

Eli stood there with no small amount of confusion as the man basically ignored the threat. Lowering the pistol slightly, the teen watched warily as the man crept towards the entrance of the store to try and catch the dog. Probably another wild dog scavenging for food - they were quite common in urban areas. Eli's gaze fell to the can of beans left by the makeshift campfire. Well, hunger was a constant problem, and if the man was offering...

The teen picked up the can and gave it a curious sniff. Shrugging, Eli sat down, laid the automatic pistol nearby, used the same spoon the man had used and started digging in. Years of surviving in a post-apocalyptic scenario had eliminated such concepts as indirect kissing, and free food was free food.

Suddenly, three consecutive gunshots echoed throughout the 7/11. The teen cursed, dropping the beans and hastily grabbing the pistol before standing up and surveying the situation. Eli thought the man had tricked her into a false sense of security to have a guaranteed chance to kill her when she wasn't looking, but upon looking the man hadn't drawn his firearm at all. Someone else fired those shots.

Sneaking around the back of the counter to the cover of the isles, Eli debated to help the man fight off the intruder or flee in the temporary confusion instead. Morality persuaded the teen to do the former, however. With a sigh of resignation, Eli stealthy slunk between the chilled goods and the grocery isles and slowly crept towards the corner where the ATM was to flank the intruder.
